EA Sports Reports 5 Good Things about the End of the Strike
Column by Bo Light and Brian Petersen
Sports Columnists

We'd like to start this week by providing a rare correction. Thanks to Mibsy Brooks G and others who pointed out that our (editor-provided) headline incorrectly identified Reggie Lewis' newly-retired number as 32. We are sorry to have such misinformation even associated with our column. Reggie's number was, of course, 33.
Inside Baseball
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, and any other team that might have had a chance in replacement ball, the players have finally agreed to end their strike, and Opening Day has been officially moved to April 26. While many fans have become disenchanted with the sport of baseball and could care less about who is playing, we would like to offer a list of the Top Five Good Things about the end of the Strike (we couldn't think of 10). 5. We don't have to see Oil Can Boyd or Pedro Borbon pitch. 4. Blooper reels will be shorter. 3. Red Sox fans can watch Jose Canseco bobbling balls instead of some nobody. 2. Tiger manager Sparky Anderson got his job back.

The Minnesota Timberwolves finally unloaded troublesome guard Isaiah Rider yesterday, trading him to Portland for forward Bill Curley, guard James Robinson and a first-round draft pick. Rider led the Wolves in scoring last season, averaging 19.6 points. ... Rod Strickland failed to take his physical for the Washington Bullets yesterday, one day before a second deadline was to expire. The physical is the final step in completing a July 15 trade with with the Portland Trail Blazers that sent Strickland and forward Harvey Grant to Washington for forward Rasheed Wallace and guard Mitchell Butler.

SCI-TECH Dickau looks forward to leading Hawks to playoffs Web posted Saturday, June 29, 2002 Have a thought? Go to the Forums or Chat By Paul Newberry Associated Press ATLANTA Dan Dickau's first order of business with the Atlanta Hawks was getting a uniform number. He asked for 21, his number at Gonzaga. Try again, the Hawks said, reminding Dickau that Dominique Wilkins' old number is now retired and hangs from the rafters at Philips Arena. "I forgot that was Dominique's number," Dickau said Friday, sounding a bit embarrassed. The problem was quickly corrected. Dickau will go back to 12, his number in high school. He was forced to give it up when he got to Gonzaga because it had once belonged to John Stockton.

Gary N. Gray SO WHAT DOES MICHAEL JORDAN HAVE TO PROVE? Last Tuesday night was the start of the 2001-02 National Basketball Association. The hype was that the new Mr. Basketball would be playing at Madison Square Garden again. No, the Bulls were not there this time. Yes, MJ would be donning another basketball jersey with the number 23 on it. It has been almost three years since we saw the NOW FAMOUS “push off and fade away” jump shot in the waning seconds of the Jazz-Bulls title gamethe shot that captured the Bulls 2 nd three-peat and Michael Jordan’s sixth title. As Michael entered the Madison Square Garden floor the other night, one thing looked different: this uniform was blue and black, not Chicago’s red and black. The uniform said “Wizards” not “Bulls”, and oh, yes, it had Jordan’s name on the back but everybody in the Garden House knew this would be different. Why? Just why, Michael, do you have to come back? Can’t you leave when you’re on top of the world, can’t you leave when you’re the world champion, can’t you leave with the sweet memories of your tongue hanging out, beating up on your defender leaving him looking at the back of your jersey, as you whiz by to the basket and leave him in your wake, leaving Portland’s Eddie Robinson shaking his head while you score 38 points in the first half of a playoff, and 60 for a game.

On Tuesday, Page 2 came up with its top 10 best all-time nicknames for sports moments. We asked for your take, and you filled our mailbag with plenty of opinions. After going through more than 300 letters, below is a complete rundown of the Top 10 vote-getters, along with some of the best letters about each nickname. And be sure to vote in the poll at left to crown the all-time best sports moment nickname. 1. "The Immaculate Reception" (44 letters)
Franco Harris came out of nowhere to make the "Immaculate Reception."
That incredible moment in history that accompanies one of the most played sound bytes ever: "It's caught out of the air! By Franco Harris!" It'll send a chill down any Pittsburgher's black-and-gold spine.
    Matt Lynch
    Uniontown, Pa.
All of the stars aligned for the Steelers that day. Did it hit Frenchy or the defender first? Where did Franco come from with that shoestring grab?! And he ran it the whole way back for the touchdown! If not for that play, the greatness of the Steelers of the 1970s may have been muddled with other solid squads of the day.

Kamiakin football coaches get chance to scout NFL staffSome little tidbits to get us through the middle of the week:
    • The National Football League is full of up-and-down stories.
Here's an "up" story: Kamiakin coach Craig Beverlin ran into a San Diego Chargers scout a few months ago, and the two men got into a conversation. "He told me that (general manager) Bobby Beathard and (owner) Alex Spanos like having high school coaches at their camp," Beverlin said. The scout offered them a front row seat with the Chargers coaches for a few days. Beverlin took him up on the offer, and nine Kamiakin coaches are paying their own airfare to San Diego, where from July 28-Aug. 1 they will sit in with the Chargers' coaches, eat meals with the team - basically live their life for a few days. At the same time, the Kamiakin coaches get a peek at the Chargers' 4-3 defense, ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season. Kamiakin runs the same type of defense, Beverlin said. "We're intrigued with what they do," Beverling said. "They have Junior Seau in the middle linebacker spot, and we're just interested in how they do it."

United Center stage set for His Airness' final landing
January 13, 1999 Free Press News Services CHICAGO Everywhere he went, every time his hands gripped a basketball, Michael Jordan left memories. With Jordan expected to announce his retirement today at the United Center after 13 seasons as the NBA's greatest player, opponents, coaches and teammates took time to remember what he meant to the sport and wonder whether they would see the likes of him again. "The NBA, the fans, the players, the coaches, American society and history are losing the greatest influence that sports has ever had," Miami Heat coach Pat Riley said. Indiana Pacers coach Larry Bird, a Jordan nemesis while Bird played with the Boston Celtics, said it was "sad for everyone to see the greatest basketball player" retire. Jordan's Chicago Bulls teammates remember the incredible competitiveness that drove him and how he made them believe he could take them anywhere. He almost always did, winning six NBA titles and 10 scoring titles. Opponents recall standing, slipping or sliding in dumbfounded amazement while His Airness worked his magic on the court. Craig Ehlo, Gerald Wilkins and Bryon Russell victims of three of Jordan's most famous shots will never live them down.
