The highlight of the pre-Bradley entourage was the bomb-sniffing German Shepherd (pet dogs are banned by the orthodox). Other highlights of the waiting period included watching women with strollers barreling through the Secret Service barriers as if nothing were going on, students in uniform barreling through the Secret Service barriers as if nothing were going on, and friends and families connected to the school barreling through Secret Service barriers as if nothing were going on. Besides myself and my co-workers, the event was attended by US Senator Moynihan, a big endorser of Bradley; a City Councilman who was ignored by the press and swallowed up by the crowd and an anonymous State Senator. There was also the president of the Boro Park YM-YWHA, who organized the event and managed to get two photos of Bradley with him and some family members.

Values of the Game Bill Bradley, Phil Jackson Amazon.com
Forget for a moment the hype, the overmarketing, the exorbitant ticket prices and salaries, the bad behavior, and the greed. Instead, return to the simple basics of basketball: a court, a hoop, a ball, and a young shooter, sweating to make certain that no one is ever more prepared or confident when the game is on the line. Strip all else away, and you come to the core of the game. It's something of a sacred place for Bill Bradley, and after a decade in the NBA and three terms in the United States Senate, it's a place he revisits with real ardor and reverence in 10 gracefully illustrated essays that cohere into a marvelous reflection on essentials and values. "The game is still full of joy and the lessons learned from it stay with you," he insists, "even though the game has changed, the old values still flow through it." The values he writes about may indeed seem antique beside the frenzied glitz of the NBA, but antiques like passion, discipline, selflessness, and responsibility continue to form the basis of character on and off the court. Of course, Bradley, with possible eyes on the White House, is writing about much more than basketball here. In some ways, this is a clear statement of his political philosophy: a country that can understand, instill, and pursue the values he's praising is a country that can work together. It's in these values that he finds the antidote to the tawdriness and partisanship that's managed to sully the level of the national debate.

By RYANN MANNING And from the sidelines, the Tigers' orange and black were also a presence. Rick Wright '64, Bradley's finance director, and a fund-raising team that included four recent alumni helped plan the $1.5-million event. In addition, several University students trekked to Madison Square Garden to help. Bradley had wanted the Tiger basketball team to take part, according to Astri Kimball '99, a staffer in the campaign's national headquarters. The team could not attend because of this weekend's season-opening tournament in Syracuse. Hoop dreams Billed as one of the most distinctive presidential fund-raising events ever, the "Back to the Garden" celebration brought basketball legends, current NBA and WNBA players, and entertainment stars together to help the former Knick's presidential bid. More than 5,000 fans and supporters paid between $50 and $1000 to meet basketball greats, shoot a layup on the famed court and hear Bradley's former teammates, opponents and other stars sing his praises from the floor at the Garden. With techno music blasting, scoreboard lights flashing and a team of cheerleaders providing "halftime" entertainment and throwing campaign T-shirts into the stands, the afternoon seemed more like a pep rally than a political event.

Life on the Run (1976), about the day-to-day existence of being a professional athlete; a memoir, Time Present, Time Past (1996); and Values of the Game (1998), in which he writes of basketball as a learning experience. In December 1998, Bradley made the first public moves toward a campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2000. In September 1999 he officially opened his campaign for the nomination for president in his hometown of Crystal City. As a challenger to Vice President Al Gore for the Democratic nomination, Bradley had an unimpressive showing at the January Iowa caucuses, taking only 35% of the vote to more than 60% for Gore. In the February New Hampshire primary, he again placed second, albeit in a close race, garnering 46% of the votes to Gore's 50% win. Following decisive losses in the March primaries in several states, Bradley withdrew from the race, throwing his support to Gore. While Bradley picked up some delegates in his presidential quest, he won none of the state primaries. For Further Reading McPhee, John, A Sense of Where You Are, 2d ed. (1978; repr. 1999)
