Princeton Portraits:
Bill Bradley '65
By Frank Deford '61 This acute portrait is by the skillful hand of Frank Deford, former PAW sports and "On The Campus" columnist, now a staff writer on 'Sports Illustrated,' where it appeared in December before the Madison Square Garden tournament in which Bill Bradley won the Most Valuable Player award (and before the announcement of his Rhodes Scholarship). It is reprinted by permission (c) Time Inc. 1964. The photographs show him at Chung Chi University at Hong Kong, where he was sent (also Tung Hai University on Taiwan) after the Olympics by the Princeton in Asia Foundation which helps support them. There he conducted basketball clinics and spoke to the students about the relation between athletics and Christian beliefs; according to this week's 'New Yorker' profile, "religion is his central source of motivation," and he told his hosts he valued this fascinating missionary trip more than the Olympics.-ED.
Bill Bradley '65 takes a hook shot IF YOU look at all of him squarely, Bill Bradley seems too good-and too much-to be true. He is the best college basketball player in the world (he won an Olympic gold medal and was the best on the U.S. team in Tokyo); he is studious, religious, ambitious, popular and respected by his peers; he is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous he is, in short, Jack Armstrong and might also be Horatio Alger, except for the fact that his father is a bank president and is paying for Bill's room, board and tuition at Princeton.

I Carried Bill Bradley's Water
by Coultas W. Kemp
Character formation is a layering process that's assembled from birth to death. It's not instant, but a mantle woven from an individual's successes and failures. It can be seen in a simple event, by the way a man treats those who can do nothing for him. Character can be better explained through the intricate stitches made by time's alterations. When all else is lost, character is the fabric left to insulate a man when he's down. As a high school junior in 1960, I was up against some tough competition during tryouts on the basketball court. In a clumsy maneuver I tripped myself and lay licking my wounds. My lips couldn't figure out if the salty taste in my mouth was blood, sweat or tears, but when I looked up, I saw an encouraging face close to mine. Embarrassment wrapped me in its red-hot cloak of confusion, and I wondered if there might be a hole big enough to crawl into. An enormous palm appeared above my face when Bill Bradley offered a helping hand. As I stood, I realized that my head was only chest high to his Lincoln-like proportions, and with that insight a youthful vision of being a basketball player was junked in the yard of broken dreams. At an awkward time, I was touched by a paragon that day and became water bearer for the future standard bearer of our nation. Although water-boy might be considered a lowly position in most sports, I was convinced that it was the most important job on the team. A person who carried water was the bearer of life. It's true that in the distribution of physical attributes size and might overlooked me, but that didn't stop me from carting water for the winning Crystal City Missouri High School basketball team of 1960-61.

The town played a major role in yesterday's event 5,000 local women baked cookies, for example and Bradley began his speech with fond memories of Crystal City, and how it had shaped him. The man From Crystal City BILL BRADLEY, Democratic Presidential Candidate: Crystal City had one stoplight then, but it had a rich array of ethnic families. When it came to race, the town was a little ahead of its time. The Little League was integrated before the schools. As a teenager, I can remember walking out of restaurants in the boot heel of Missouri because they wouldn't serve our black catcher. Racism disturbed me then, and still angers me now. For me, the only thing deserving of hate is hate itself. (Applause)

Bradley Named Men's Basketball Player Of The Century Reprinted from Princeton Athletic News Jan. 7, 2000 He was not born to it, none of it. His father left school at 16 to work for a railroad, his mother was a teacher. He was an only child. His father would leave the railroad to take the lowest position at the local bank, and he would work his way all the way to the top as its president. Still, this was Crystal City, a Missouri town of 3,500 far from the Eastern establishment. There are four legitimate contenders for President of the United States in the 2000 race. One is George W. Bush, whose father was President of the United States. One is Al Gore, himself the Vice President whose father was a powerful political figure in Congress before him. One is John McCain, whose father and grandfather were four-star admirals in the Navy. The other is Bill Bradley, the son of a small-town Midwest railroad worker-turned-banker and teacher.

by Harvey Frommer The urbane and sophisticated Bill Bradley, whose name and image dominated headlines as he pursued the Democratic Presidential nomination is, in many ways, the same person he was when he starred for the New York Knickerbockers of the NBA. But in one way he is definitely different. Back then he was known as "Dollar Bill." It was a nickname he definitely deserved. While other National Basketball Association stars drove flashy cars and sported even more flashy clothes, Bradley lived simply and dressed even simpler. His apartment, a friend once said, "looked like a Holiday Inn room before the maid showed up." Bradley reportedly used paper clips when his cuff buttons gave out. His contract with the New York Knickerbockers called for $500,000 for four years, a great deal of money for that time period. But the nickname Bill Bradley received was not for the money he earned, some said, but for the money he saved. Many players believe he saved the first buck he ever made. There was a precedent for this behavior. While a Rhodes Scholar for two years at Oxford University, Bradley lived out of what was called "a large and appallingly messy suitcase." But he had more important things on his mind than style and consumer comforts.
