Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joins CBS Sports
  • Abdul-Jabbar To Team with Dick Enberg and Matt Guokas During 2003 NCAA Tournament
  • Listen to the Conference Call: Part I I Part II Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, NBA Hall of Famer and former UCLA Bruin standout, joins CBS Sports as an analyst for the CBS Television Network's coverage of the 2003 college basketball regular season and the 2003 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. The announcement was made today by Sean McManus, President, CBS Sports. Abdul-Jabbar will serve as an analyst alongside Dick Enberg and Matt Guokas in calling the North Carolina State at Duke game on Saturday, Feb. 22 (4:00-6:00 PM, ET). The trio also will be teamed for the first and second rounds of the 2003 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. "We are thrilled to add a person of Kareem's stature and talent to our college basketball announcing lineup," said McManus. "Obviously he has a strong association with the NCAA tournament and we look forward to his championship caliber work." Abdul-Jabbar played under legendary coach John Wooden from 1965 to 1969. During his tenure at UCLA, in which he was known as Lew Alcindor, Abdul-Jabbar led the Bruins to a record of 88-2, and won the NCAA championship three consecutive years beginning in 1967. Wooden calls Abdul-Jabbar, "the best basket player the game as ever known." He was named NCAA Tournament MVP three times and was the NCAA National Player of the Year in 1967 and 1969.

    Receives UCLA Medal
At the June 15 Commencement at Pauley Pavilion, History alumnus Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the Distinguished Speaker and was awarded the UCLA medal by Vice-Chancellor Charles Kennel. The citation recalled Kareem's remarkable basketball career: a UCLA record 2,325 points, and Most Valuable Player awards in three NCAA tournaments, the only player ever to attain that honor. In a 20-year NBA career, Kareem led his teams to six World Championships, received an equal number of MVP awards, and scored more points than any player before or since. He was elected to the NBA Hall of Fame in 1995, in his first year of eligibility. Off the court, Kennel praised Kareem's work with children. The Kareem's Kids program motivates L.A. area children to stay in school and avoid gangs. He is chair of the Jazz Sports LA program, which supports music instruction for gifted students in the LAUSD. He has been active in several literacy groups, as well as CARE. As an author and film-maker, he has shared his research on the black experience in America, most notably in his 1996 book Black Profiles in Courage and in a recent television film about civil rights activist Vernon Johns. Kareem then spoke eloquently to the graduates about the importance of his own academic career at UCLA-both his major in history and even general education courses (like Physics) which he initially took unwillingly. He emphasized that education was about more than a job or making money-he and many other college athletes turned down vast sums to finish their education. When he once boasted of getting good grades-As and Bs-in his history classes, Coach John Wooden overheard him and pointed out he should be getting good grades in his major. Kareem said it was a good reminder that, despite the outside view that he was majoring in basketball, Coach Wooden expected his players to be serious students as well.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Among his many achievements during his illustrious career in Milwaukee and Los Angeles, six-time basketball MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the all-time leading scorer. In 1978, Abdul-Jabbar translated his popularity into a film career by appearing as a hulking foe to Bruce Lee in Game of Death. The ensuing battle royale between the diminutive martial arts master and the agile seven-foot hoopster remains a highlight of martial arts cinema. Other film appearances include a memorable turn as a co-pilot who tires of being mistaken for Abdul-Jabbar in 1980's Airplane. In most of his subsequent films, Abdul-Jabbar has stuck to making cameo appearances as himself; he did however have a supporting role in the television pilot for the Robert Mitchum series Jake Spanner, Private Eye in 1989, the year he retired from professional basketball. Since then, his film and television appearances as an actor have been increasingly sporadic. Abdul-Jabbar has, however, continued to use his legendary status as an example. He is a tireless worker for various philanthropic causes and has devoted a large amount of time to helping children and steering them toward getting a good education. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide FILMOGRAPHY NBA: Centers Fastbreak: the Fundamentals of Championship Basketball LA Lakers 1988 Tales from the Darkside, Vol. 3 (199?)

"In my opinion, he is the most valuable player in the history of the game. No player of comparable size and ability was ever as quick and maneuverable, but his unselfish team play has been equally impressive." - John Wooden What's in a name? Whether it was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (his Muslim name) or Lew Alcindor (his birth name), he is a winner. In high school. In College. In the pros. As Alcindor, he led Power Memorial Academy to three straight New York City Catholic championships and a 71-game winning streak. Then came three consecutive NCAA championships at UCLA, with Alcindor becoming the only player to win three Most Outstanding Player awards at the Final Four. UCLA went 88-2 in his three seasons, and twice he was named college Player of the Year. In the NBA, the 7-foot-2 center helped his teams win six championships (one with the Milwaukee Bucks, five with the Los Angeles Lakers). When Abdul-Jabbar retired in 1989 after 20 seasons, he left as the league's all-time leader scorer with 38,387 points. He was voted MVP six times and NBA Finals MVP twice. At age 9, Lew Jr. tried his first hook shot. He missed, but it felt natural. He was already 5-8. As an eighth grader he stood 6-8 and could dunk.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the top-scoring basketball player of all time. Born Lewis Alcindor on April 16, 1947, he grew up in New York City where he led Power Memorial High School's basketball team to a 95-6 record. He was a highly regarded prep and landed on the UCLA Bruins. Alcindor won three consecutive NCAA titles from 1967-1969, leading the Bruins to an 88-2 record. He was also named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player those 3 years, the first and only player to do that. He was also named College Player of the Year by all the major organizations (TSN, AP, UP, USBWA) from 1967-1969. His Collegiate Success, and reputation as perhaps the best College Player of All-Time, translated into his Number One Selection in the 1969 Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. He left UCLA as their all-time leading scorer with 2,325 points. Lewis changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the early 1970's when he converted to Islam. He played with the Bucks for 6 years, being named the League MVP in a Milwaukee uniform in 1971, 1972 and 1974 (he would win 3 more as a Laker). Kareem won his only NBA title with the Bucks, and fellow Hall of Fame great Oscar Robinson in 1971. Four of his six years in Milwaukee he averaged better than 30 points a game.

(ROBERT HARBISON - STAFF) Midway through his first season as assistant coach at Whiteriver's high school on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, the leading scorer in NBA history has made an impact as huge as his 7-foot, 2-inch frame and as broad as his mammoth hands, which palm basketballs as if they were grapefruit. "Kareem has put us on the map nationally, not just as a basketball team, but as a native American people," says Raul Mendoza, head basketball coach of the Alchesay High School Falcons. Noting standing-room-only arenas for regular-season games and an influx of national TV and print reporters to this little-known, rural community of 13,000, Mr. Mendoza says, "Both this state and the larger world are gaining a better understanding of just who are the White Mountain Apaches."

As an international spokesperson and role model, he has taught basketball to the world's youth, dined with dignitaries and served as an ambassador of American Goodwill. Throughout his career, he has devoted countless hours to charity. Athletes and Entertainers for Kids established "Kareem's Kids" in 1989, with the goal of motivating youth to stay in school. He also formed a program for high school athletes which focuses on the importance of higher education and earning good grades, and has worked extensively with RP International, various literacy groups and C.A.R.E. His latest project took Kareem to the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, where he was the volunteer coach of the reservation’s basketball team. Now Kareem comes to the lecture podium in an engaging exclusive presentation through Greater Talent Network, sharing the secrets of success that made history on the court. He is an indispensable speaker on the importance of sustained excellence and goal-setting, and also brings valuable insight about teamwork and leadership. In an alternate program, he draws on his acclaimed book Black Profiles in Courage to explore the untold history of the nation through the achievements of African-Americans.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Getty Images SI : How fundamentally sound is today's NBA player? Abdul-Jabbar : Today's players are a lot less fundamentally sound than they were 15 years ago. The fact is that in years past people had to stay in college and they learned the fundamentals. They also had to go to class and learn a few things that had nothing to do with the game. And they had to be patient and mature a little bit. It's really very good for a basketball player to go through all that in their teenage years. SI : Could you teach the sky hook to one of today's centers? Abdul-Jabbar : I could teach the sky hook to anyone who wants to learn it, even little kids who can't palm the basketball. It just takes a little bit of patience. SI : Your father was a New York City Transit policeman and a Juilliard-trained jazz musician. Did either profession ever appeal to you? Abdul-Jabbar : My dad was a second-generation police officer. My grandfather had been a police officer in the West Indies. But I probably would have gone for music. My grandfather used to speak of how he didn't like picking up and dropping off prisoners. He felt like he was dealing in human misery and he was glad to leave that behind when he came to America
