He won Most Valuable Player Awards at two different positions. He became the first player to have two four-hit games in a single World Series, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He accomplished all of this after nearly giving up the game at the age of 22 to become a professional golfer.

ROBIN YOUNT
The 1978 Holdout: When Robin Yount Nearly Became a Golfer In the spring of 1978 Robin Yount was a major league veteran at the age of 22. He had become perhaps the majors youngest regular player ever in 1974 at the age of 18. Gradually he built himself into a solid major league shortstop. Aided by Henry Aaron and Harvey Kuenn, he learned how to pull the ball and spray hits to all fields. He also lowered his error totals and became a decent defensive infielder. During spring training of 1978 several incidents came to pass that resulted in a brief detour in Yount’s Hall of Fame baseball career. Yount and his longtime girlfriend were at a crossroads in their relationship that left their future in doubt. In addition, Milwaukee and Yount had yet to agree on terms for a contract beyond the ’78 season. Coupled with these concerns was the frustration Yount felt at playing for a struggling Brewers club. A minor ankle sprain left him hobbled and Yount began slowly in spring training. Shortly afterword, he left the team mysteriously. Reports abounded that he was quitting baseball and would try to turn pro as a golfer. Yount had once shot two over par at famed Pebble Beach and was a scratch golfer. Other reports claimed the young star was leveraging his position with the team for a long-term contract.

Yount joins baseball's cherished class

F or 20 seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers could count on Robin Yount coming through when it meant the most. On a steamy yet glorious day in this village dedicated to the game he loved so dearly, Yount came through one more time. Delivering an eloquent acceptance speech, Yount was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame along with six other men Sunday. Yount's bronze plaque was later hung in the museum's gallery, making him the first representative of the Brewers so honored. Go to Story Yount Photos Hall of Fame Audio Yount Milestones ... One player defines Milwaukee Brewers baseball
Last Updated: July 16, 1999 Michael Bauman
This scene didn't happen often, but it always happened exactly the same way. Robin Yount was nicked up. It was probably the right shoulder, but maybe it was a sprain or a strain or a bone bruise. The Milwaukee Brewers' team physician would tell him to take the night off. That didn't work. Soon, teammates, coaches, the manager, even the general manager, were enlisted in the cause of getting Yount to miss even one game. This clubhouse-wide effort always fell short. There would be only one recourse. They had to call the man upstairs, or, in this case, the team president, Bud Selig.

Sep. 19, 1967- Baseball player. Jim Abbott is one of an elite group of major-league pitchers to have thrown a no-hitter, a feat he accomplished while he was a New York Yankee in 1993. Abbott, who began the 1995 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and ended it as a California Angel, is also among the few hurlers whose fastballs have been clocked at over ninety miles an hour. What makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he plays ball without a right hand. He was born with a rounded stub at the end of his right arm, with one small, finger-like protrusion where his right hand should be. He pitches with his left hand, with the palm of his glove resting on the stub. After each pitch, he quickly switches the glove to his left hand, so that he can catch or field balls thrown or hit back. Prior to becoming a major-league pitcher, Abbott was an Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate baseball all-star, and a high-school standout in three sports. Abbott's athletic achievements have amazed sports fans and inspired countless numbers of Americans with disabilities, who flock to ballparks to see him pitch. He receives hundreds of letters a week, many of them from handicapped children and their parents, and he tries to answer as many as he can, even though he has never considered himself to be disabled. "I just don't think all of this about me playing with one hand is as big an issue as everyone wants to make it," he told Ira Berkow of the New York Times (December 25, 1992). "I don't try to run from the attention about it; I just accept it." Abbott maintains that the toughest thing he faces is not his disability but major-league hitters. The feeling is apparently mutual. "He's got the hand that counts," Larry Sheets of the Baltimore Orioles told a reporter for the Washington Post (April 26, 1989) after facing Abbott's power pitching for the first time.

  • All-Star in 1980, 1982-83 Robin Yount displayed amazing natural talent from the start of his career. Yount was just 18 years old when first called up to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1974 as a shortstop, immediately becoming one of the youngest regulars in baseball history. Combining that head start with steady production, hard-nosed intensity, and admirable team loyalty, Yount became a member of the elite 3,000-hit club 18 seasons later, still with the Brewers. His peak year was 1982, when he led Milwaukee to the World Series with a .331 batting average, 29 homers, and 114 RBI all career highs. Yount also led the league in hits, tied for the lead in doubles, and led shortstops with 489 assists. He was awarded both a Gold Glove and the AL MVP Award. Yount had another MVP season in 1989, hitting .318 with 21 home runs and 103 RBI in becoming only the third player to win an MVP award at two different positions. (check out the rest of his bio).
