Many historians and statisticians rank Cy Young as the greatest pitcher of all-time. Here's his bio and stats: He's the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter in two different centuries, and 'Cy' pitched three career no-hitters, including a perfect game. He won over 30 games or more 5 times. He is the only pitcher in history to win 25 games or more 12 times and only one to win 20 or more 15 times. He picked up his nickname 'Cy' as a young phenom because of the speed of his pitches ( like a 'Cyclone' ). Cy Young won 511 games in his career, the most ever, and he lost only 316, an outstanding percentage of .618. His career ERA was 2.63. He pitched in 906 games, 7354 innings and he fanned 2803 hitters. Cy Young started 815 games and completed an amazing 749 of them. "Young grew even more effective as the innings passed and Anson's Chicago's left the field beaten and blind with rage. Then the crowd which had laughed at the unique figure of the new pitcher arose in a mass and gave him an ovation." After the game 'Cap' Anson offered Cleveland $1,000 for the young phenom but was simply laughed out of town.

Shirley Povich Tribute

No Mistaking These Guys for Cy Young By Shirley Povich
Washington Post Columnist
Sunday, July 7, 1991; Page D03 His name was Cy Young, deceased since 1955, and he comes to mind because of the continuing travesties in his memory. The Cy Young Award designed to honor pitching excellence in his image is being profaned every year by guys with seemingly little understanding that baseball is a nine-inning game. Cy Young is a proper icon in pitching history. He won more games than anyone, 511. More even than Walter Johnson. He was the master of the complete game, once pitching 54 in succession. He would not understand the new breed of pitchers, or managers who sometimes say in their praise, "He'll give us five good innings." That would be a recipe for back to Binghamton in Cy Young's era. As for last year's Cy Young Award winners, he could be asking what planet did these types come from? Bob Welch of the Oakland A's, in his 35 starts, pitched only two complete games. Doug Drabek of the Pirates completed nine of 33 starts. By Young's lights, these are pitchers? The man who pitched 750 complete games, who went the limit in 40 of his 41 starts one season, could be tempted to disassociate himself from the Cy Young Award or simply accept the truth that the complete game is a lost art.

Prospect report Clemens wins record sixth Cy Young By Mel Antonen, USA TODAY By Mike Blake, Reuters Roger Clemens is the first Yankee to win the AL Cy Young award since Ron Guidry in 1978. Related items Roger Clemens surpassed Walter Johnson on the all-time strikeout list, won 20 games and pitched in Game 7 of the World Series, but he'll remember the 2001 season for Sept. 25, the New York Yankees' first home game after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Clemens, the starting pitcher, walked from the clubhouse that day and saw a long line of police officers, who embraced him and shook his hand as he made his way through the tunnel.

Former UCSB Pitcher Barry Zito Wins AL Cy Young Award Zito Edged Red Sox Pitcher Pedro Martinez By 18 Points Nov. 7, 2002 Santa Barbara, Calif.- On Thursday, former UCSB pitcher Barry Zito was named the American League Cy Young Award winner. Zito edged Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez by a total of 18 points to claim the honor. In 2002, the southpaw finished 23-5 with a 2.75 ERA in nearly 230 innings pitched, all of which are career highs. At age 24, the A's pitcher became the seventh-youngest ever to win the award. Zito pitched his freshman year for the Gauchos before finishing his collegiate career at USC. In 1997, Zito recorded 123 strikeouts for the Gauchos, which ranks him second on UCSB's all-time strikeout list for a single season. In last year's alumni game, the Oakland Athletic's pitcher did not see time on the hill, but the lefty did play shortstop and leftfield finishing the game with a hit and an RBI.
