A pitcher's got to be good and he's got
to be lucky to get a no hit game.
In our day, when a pitcher got into trouble
in a game, instead of taking him out, our
manager would leave him in and
tell him to pitch his way out of trouble.
Gosh, all a kid has to do these days is spit
straight and he gets forty-thousand dollars to sign. Control is what kept me in the big leagues for twenty-two years. I pitched Major League games in twenty-two years, and I never had a sore arm until the day I quit. My arm went bad in when I was in spring training, and I guess it was about time. All us Youngs could throw. I used to kill squirrels with a stone when I was a kid, and my granddad once killed a turkey buzzard on the fly with a rock. I thought I had to show all my stuff and I almost tore the boards of the grandstand with my fastball. One of the fellows called me 'Cyclone' but finally shortened it to 'Cy' and its been that ever since.

He was an anatomical marvel, starting at least 40 games eleven times. He finished with more wins, innings, games started and complete games than any other hurler. Ninety years later he still holds those records. The best pitcher in each league is honored with an award named for him. He threw the first pitch in modern World Series history. Cy Young remains standard by which
Major League pitchers are judged By DEAN LOLLIS
Ask anyone who the greatest pitcher of all time is and, undoubtedly, Cy Young's name has to come up in the conversation. After all, Young's name is attached to the honor that recognizes the top pitcher in each league. For baseball, the award offers a chance to honor a star while it keeps those who play today from remembering the roots of another player. "You've done it once. Cy Young topped 30 victories five times." Individual talking to Denny McLain after he won 30 games in 1968 Cy Young pitched in a time when pitchers were dominant or they were out of a job. He sat milestaones that will probably never be eclipsed. For example, in Young's first full season in the majors, he pitched 423.2 innings. NL Cy Young Award winner in 2000, Randy Johnson pitched 248.2 innings. The AL winner, Pedro Martinez. rang up 217 innings. As the pioneer of Major League pitching, Cy Young set milestones in Major League wins with 511, innings pitched with 7.354.2, complete games with 749, and losses with 316. Young's career spanned 22 years and included the time when pitchers stood only 50 feet from home plate.

Did you know that...? He pitched for 22 seasons and won 511 games, still a record - He holds the Major League record for complete games with 751. - He holds the Major League record for innings pitched with 7,356. - He is fourth on the all-time shutout list with 76. He won 20 or more games on 16 occasions. - He won 30 or more games on five occasions. - In the 1890s, he averaged 27 wins per season with an earned run average of 3.05. - In the 1900s, he averaged 27 wins per season with an earned run average of 2.12. - He threw three no-hitters, including a perfect game. He led the league in shutouts seven times. - He led the league in total wins four times. He had a career ERA of 2.63. - He was voted to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1937. Baseball: Cy Young His 511 victories and 751 complete games led Major League Baseball to recognize his talent by awarding an annual trophy that bears his name. Cy Young pitched for 22 years and won 511 games in the Major Leagues. But the number 511 just doesn't have the same cachet as Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, or Mark McGwire's 70 home runs in a season.

Cy Young
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Denton True Young March 29 November 4 ) was the pre-eminent baseball pitcher during the and . His nickname "Cy" is short for "Cyclone," and was coined after a fence he threw at looked like it had sustained cyclone damage. He was born in Gilmore, Ohio Young is generally considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Not only is he a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame (elected in ), but the Cy Young Award , the premier annual award given to the best major league pitchers in each league, is named in his honor.
Cy Young, 1911 baseball card Young set a career record for wins, 511, which will probably never be matched under the conditions of the game. Current seasons produce just a few pitchers with more than 20 wins, at which pace a pitcher would have to pitch for more than 25 years to surpass the record.
