Wilson's lost RBI has historians bothered
Owen S. Good
Cooperstown News Bureau
Their official scorer made 10.
Unless you understand what it means to give Wilson another RBI in 1930. That's the season when he gathered a major-league record 190, according to nearly every book in print since then. It should be 191, says a group of baseball researchers who have put a Cooperstown man in charge of getting baseball to accept the new total.
"I think it's important that everything that happens in baseball should be kept very accurately," said Clifford Kachline, a former historian for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. And Juan Gonzalez of the Texas Rangers threatening the record this year is all the more reason to make the change now, he said.
"With Gonzalez having a possibility," Kachline said, "it would be totally unfair to change the record afterward, that is, change the error, when it was known beforehand."
At its annual convention in San Francisco last week, the Society for American Baseball Research's records committee asked Kachline, 76, to go forward with lobbying baseball and the major statistics houses that follow it to change the number.

A 1998 USA Today article suggests that “there should be no shutting him out,” and lists the following as Roger’s qualifications.
  • American League MVP in 1960 when he hit 39 homers and led the league with 112 RBIs.
  • American League MVP in 1961 when he broke Ruth’s record and led the league with 142 RBIs.
  • 1,325 hits and 851 RBIs in 12 seasons.
  • Gold Glove outfielder whom one former teammate says, “I never saw make a mistake in the outfield. Could play all three outfield positions.”
  • An outstanding base-runner who frequently was injured breaking up double plays at second base.
  • Played on 7 World Series teams.
Roger’s career numbers.
  • The 61 single-season home run record stood for 37 years, longer than the record Maris broke of Babe Ruth’s 60-homers in 1927.

"It all depends on how the rest of the team is playing." I hear it over and over again. Plus, there are plenty of statheads who are trying to account for every run scored in the history of baseball, and decide who was responsible for every base that every baserunner advanced in the process of scoring all the runs. Most people's eyes glaze over at the very thought. Hell, I'm sure somebody's eyes are glazing over as they read this. Nevertheless, my objective here is to give the fan a clue about what's good and useful, using stats that are readily available without the use of a Cray supercomputer. Sometimes you need a Cray. Sometimes, like when you're crunching baseball numbers, you don't.

July Retrospective
July's question :
Last month's question: For 5 points, who was George Hackenschmidt? For 45 points, why would a baseball fan care about ole George? Earning 5 points for correctly identifying George Hackenschmidt as a professional wrestler were Don Johnson and Pete Ciccarrelli. Earning all 50 points were Bruce Corwin, Joe Morency, P. J. Nudo, Davis Pan, Darice Wareham and Carl Bessone. Joe Morency provided a succinct, anecdotal answer as follow (edited for correctness re: baseball facts): George Hackenschmidt, The Russian Lion," was a bodybuilder and championship wrestler around the turn of the century. He was eventually defeated in 1908 by Frank Gotch, whom some consider to be a "dirty wrestler." George was also an author, who wrote a combination training manual and biography called "The Way to Live." It was first published in 1908 and by 1940 after 21 editions, was considered to be one of the largest selling books on physical culture ever. George passed away in England in 1968 at the age of 90.
The only connection I could find between George and baseball was that Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson, who played for the Giants, Cubs and Dodgers (and 7 games with the Phils) from 1923 through 1934, might have gotten his nickname because of his resemblance to George Hackenschmidt. Wilson was also very strong and once considered becoming a boxer. Apparently, he also liked to drink as this story relates: "One day Cubs manager, Joe McCarthy, tried to teach Wilson a lesson. "If I drop a worm in a glass of water, it swims around," he told Wilson. "If I drop it in a glass of whiskey, the worm dies. What does this prove?" "If you drink whisky, you'll never get worms," Wilson responded."
