The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes. Batting Categories: Hits/Avg, Doubles/2B%, Triples/3B%, HomeRuns/HR%, StrikeOuts/SO%, Walks/BB%, Runs/RBI, StolenBases/SB%, TotalBases/SLG%, RunsCreated/OPS%

    LEWIS ROBERT "HACK" WILSON
    Outfielder

Died: November 23, 1948, Baltimore, MD
    BR TR 5'6 190 lbs.

    HOF: 1979
Unquestionably, Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson was one of the most dominant offensive performers in baseball history. As with Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, Wilson's record of 190 RBI in 1930 appears likely to last forever. However, perhaps no player in the history of baseball is a more renowned alcoholic than Hack Wilson.
Wilson was born in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, in 1900. He quit school in the sixth grade and worked as a printer's apprentice an ironworker in a locomotive factory, and a shipyard laborer, among other jobs. He eventually made his way into baseball, joining Martinsburg of the Blue Ridge League as a catcher in 1921. In 1922 he hit 30 home runs in 84 games to win a promotion to Portsmouth of the Virginia League, where he was switched to the outfield.
When he led the league in triples, home runs, RBI, and batting average, the Giants brought him up to the majors. Legend has it that New York's clubhouse man despaired of finding a uniform to fit Wilson's odd dimensions. Finally Manager John McGraw tossed the outfielder one from his own locker. "Don't disgrace that uniform," he growled. "A great player once wore it. Me!" "A great player will wear it now," said Wilson modestly.

Professor Baseball returns for a second season at Miller Park
    Play ball!
by Brad Stratton Imelda Marcos and Hack Wilson, Sikorsky helicopters and curve balls, American yarn vs. Australian yarn. All of these were part of the rookie season for UWM’s Professor Baseball at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers. The professor is preparing for a second season, which starts April 5 with a match-up between the Brewers and World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. Once each game, the animated Professor Baseball appears on the giant scoreboards high above center field in Miller Park to ask a baseball-related question or offer a little-known fact that relates to the game. Each item is linked to a school, department, or program at the university. An archive of all questions and comments delivered during the 2001 season can be found at the professor’s Web site The between-innings scoreboard feature is just one part of UWM’s marketing relationship with the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. Other parts of the agreement include:
    • A 3-by-72-foot black-and-gold sign on the back wall of the visitors’ bullpen just beyond the field’s right-center-field wall. It is not only visible from most of Miller Park’s 42,000 seats, but it also is frequently seen on television when home runs are hit at or near it. Several small dents in the sign show it has been a popular target for batters.

    STAN HACK
    Stats from www.baseball-reference.com
For most of the past four decades, the Cubs have been riding roughshod, but it wasn't always so. During Stan Hack's 16 years with the club, they played in four World Series, and the happy-go-lucky hot corner man was a big part of that success. He was the top lead-off batter of the 1930's, scoring at least 100 runs seven times. He was a smooth fielder, with an accurate if not shotgun arm. Stan Hack had a lifetime average of .301 and hit .348 in those World Series. He was a great bunter, and twice led the league in steals. Unlike most hitters of that era, Hack hit well to all fields. The Cubs of that era were fairly stable; first base was Charley Grimm, followed by Phil Cavaretta, both Chicago legends (Grimm managed during much of Hack's career), Billy Herman, who came up about the same time as Hack at second, Billy Jurges at short and Hack at third. Baseball! Baseball! Aw, fuhgedaboudit The 2002 World Series has dwindled to a state championship between two of the most undesirable, disliked teams in major league baseball. This isn't the first all-California World Series, but no match-up has ever been as lacklustre as this one. Boo! Audio
CBC Radio's Lorna Jackson talks to Martin O'Malley about the 2002 World Series just before the opening pitch. From The World This Weekend (October 19, 2002 - Runs 5:44) I'll be watching, of course, but only to keep an eye on the grotesqueries. We have a team, the Anaheim Angels, whose owners desperately want to unload the franchise but can't find a buyer, even though they've halved the asking price to about $130 million. We have the San Francisco Giants with two of the most personality-challenged players in the history of baseball: Barry Bonds and Kenny Lofton. Louis Cauz, author of

Lewis (Hack) Wilson, 1900-1948. He batted .307 in his major league career, with 244 home runs in 12 seasons. Poor Hack Wilson. He was one of baseball's greatest sluggers for the Chicago Cubs in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He is in the Hall of Fame, but he had a disappointing career, cut short by alcoholism. Hack, who thoroughly enjoyed the life of the popular athlete, made one of baseball's highest salaries during the Depression, but he wound up deep in debt, and by the 1940s he was employed as a manager of a public swimming pool in Baltimore. When he died suddenly at the age of 48, he was so broke that the National League paid for his funeral. Hack was one of the oddest-looking ballplayers ever. He was only 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with massive upper arms and a broad chest, but he wore size 5 and a half shoes. That's not a misprint, either. He supported his muscular body on short legs and tiny feet. Hack, as a result of his unusually-proportioned body, was never much of a fielder, so the Cubs put him in left field where he could do the least damage. Still, he dropped a crucial fly ball in the 1929 World Series, and the Chicago fans never let him forget it. They threw lemons at him whenever he came to bat for years afterwards.

GEORGE BURKE COLLECTION, from a collection of original negatives: Just before the 1929 season, Cubs’ manager Joe McCarthy and catcher Gabby Hartnett wanted photos of the players in street clothes. They thought they were calling old Cubs’ team photographer Francis Burke, but instead called George Burke, who had no baseball experience. George jumped at the chance to work at Wrigley Field. He shortly became the official photographer for the White Sox and the Chicago Bears. Burke, who went by the nickname “Pipe-Heidseick” because of his brand of champagne-flavored chewing tobacco, took frequent hunting trips with Hall of Famer Billy Hermann and Lon Warneke, his best friend. Burke suffered a heart attack in 1948, and Brace continued on – all the while paying Burke’s medical bills.
Their only peer was the renowned Charles M. Conlon.

    J. LOUIS COMISKEY, the only son of Charles Comiskey, was a shy and benevolent man who lived in the shadow of his illustrious father. He was appointed vice-president and treasurer of the White Sox in 1910. Two years later, he contracted scarlet fever and, for the rest of his life, had to maintain a hospital suite at St. Luke's in Chicago. Complicating his condition was his weight - 300 lbs. In 1931, Charles Comiskey passed away, leaving the last-place White Sox to his son. Within a few years, Lou restored the club to respectability. He purchased Mule Haas, Al Simmons, and Jimmy Dykes from Philadelphia in 1932, and started the first White Sox farm system, which began yielding results by 1939. That year, Lou had lights installed in Comiskey Park, but he did not live to see the first night game, passing away on July 18.
