Hack was, first of all, a physical phenomenon. There were 195 pounds of him on a 5'6" frame: the height of Phil Rizzuto , only 40-45 pounds heavier. As a young man it was all muscle: a barrel-chested upper body, blacksmith arms, and bulging thighs and calves on the short, short legs that tapered to tiny feet. He wore an 18 collar and size 6 shoe. And until the liquor overmastered him, he could hit a ton. RELATED LINKS

A passel of Wilsons dominates my paper.
It's high time to investigate this caper.
When did Wilsons take over the game?
Try finding a boxscore without the name. There are nine guys called Wilson in all,
the biggest name in major league ball.
If you counted only eight in the pack,
then, buddy, you don't know Jack. There are two middling pitchers, Paul and Kris,
and Preston the outfielder, Mr. Swing-and-a-Miss.
There's Enrique, scourge of Yankees foe, who fear the second coming of Sojo.

The Baseball Tragedy of Hack Wilson
by Clifton Blue Parker
McFarland, 2000 Buy the book Chapter 6 B ack in 1931, Hack wasn't the only National Leaguer suffering at the plate. Suddenly, pitching was better throughout the league. It seemed the balls were mushier. Catcher Al Lopez recalled the change: "In 1930 Bill Terry hit .401 and the following year he hit .349. It killed Hack Wilson . Just murdered Hack Wilson…. Hack was more of a right- center field hitter in the Cubs' ballpark. When they came in with a dead ball it was just an easy flyball." English affirms that view. "Hack that year was hitting flyball outs. The balls that used to carry into the stands were just long flyballs. Unless you were a line drive hitter, you suffered quite a bit. I don't know whether the American League had the same ball that year or not. We knew that our ball was a lot deader. The balls that used to be hit real sharp, now they came down on two or three big bounces to you. And so the premium was now on pitching and defense." F ew people realize that when Hack Wilson hit his 200th career homer at Ebbets Field on June 18, 1931

"A Million Dollar Slugger from the Five and Ten Cent Store."
In 1923 Wilson broke into the big leagues appearing in 3 games with the New York Giants after winning the triple crown in the Virginia League. During his time in New York he gained his famous nickname, the origins of which are debated. The most popular belief behind the moniker is that Wilson was named after wrestler George Hackenschmidt, other theories are suggest it is Cub's strongman OF Hack Miller that inspired the name, and that it may have been a commentary on Wilson often erratic play in the field. Whatever the case, Hack, is one of the most memorable nicknames in the games' history.
In Chicago Wilson began to blossom. He instantly became a fan favorite because of his unusual physique. Wilson stood only 5'6", but weighed 190 lbs (some say he may have weighed much more). He had an 18" neck, a torso resembling a barrel, short but thick arms, stumpy legs, & tiny, size 6 feet. It was Wilson's bat, however, that made him a star. In 1926 he hit .321 with 109 RBI, and won the first of three straight home run titles with 21. In 1929 Wilson led the Cubs to the World Series, but was tabbed as the goat losing two fly balls in one inning in Game 4, helping the Philadelphia Athletics rally from a 8-0 deficit to win the game & eventually the series.

Clifton Blue Parker has done an excellent and very thorough and complete research of a rather difficult subject, and pulled off a solid read from start to finish. Clifton Parker is correct in one of his assessments late in this book...People are forgetting Hack Wilson. Here today and gone tomorrow aptly applies to the career and life of Hack Wilson. That is sad indeed. Hack Wilson was a character of the game both on and off the field. What Mr. Parker has done is preserve a life, career and very important lesson in life in his book. Clifton Parker puts Wilson's 191 RBI's into perspective and does not candy coat it. He backs it up with reasonable assumptions and hard facts. A tragic figure is Wilson, and Mr. Parker portrays him accordingly. Interesting how some of today's so-called athletes and heros are really no different than Wilson...
