Born in 1918 in San Diego, California, Ted Williams is most famous for his record - he had a .406 season which has never been bested. Ted's excellent baseball career came despite going to World War II for 3 years and then the Korean War for another 2. He put in many years with the Boston Red Sox, the team with which he is most identified. While other athletes struggle to do even partially as well as him with full prime time runs, Ted took time out for his country and still created a record that stands the test of time. Slugger Ted Williams Dead at the Age of 83
Story By Sol Tucker and Pointed Staff: Photo: 1999 File Photo /Pointed Staff Crystal River, FL Although many of our staffers we not alive to see the great accomplishments of Ted Williams, many here have felt the passing of Ted Williams today with great sadness. Plenty of Washingtonians remember him while he coached the Washington Senators and they too will remember him as the last coach of a professional baseball team here in the Washington area . He managed three years in Washington and one more when the club moved to Texas as the Rangers in 1972. Williams’ teams went 273-364 during that span, carrying a .429 mark. Not the best record, but something anyone from this area would love to see again. If a team returns to Washington, a part of the stadium should be named in his honor. Many of our staff members last had a chance to see Williams at the 1999 All Star Game when he threw out a ceremonial pitch to the uproar of the sold-out Fenway Park. Just seeing Williams throwing the ball was a throw back in time for many Red Sox's fans and his death today surely will be felt all throughout the country and especially in Boston. It was the last time that any of us saw him throw a baseball. Williams, who suffered a series of strokes and congestive heart failure in recent years, was taken Friday to Citrus County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest at 8:49 a.m., said hospital spokeswoman Rebecca Martin. He had been suffering heart problems since November of 2000, when he had a pacemaker installed. Then just two months later, in January of 2001, he underwent open-heart surgery with no problem and it appeared that the slugger had regained much of his life back.
