Wednesday, July 10, 2002 Baseball pays tribute to Ted Williams
The Associated Press MILWAUKEE
Baseball also formally announced that the All-Star game MVP will be named after Williams, who died Friday at age 83. Ironically, no MVP award was given when the game was called after a 7-7 tie when both teams ran out of pitchers following the 11th inning. Highlights of Williams' career played on the video board before the unveiling, and Garciaparra, Tony Gwynn, Sammy Sosa and Shawn Green talked about the impact Williams' All-Star appearance at his home stadium in 1999 had on them. There was a notable absence from the ceremony as Williams' son, John Henry, pulled out at the last minute.

In addition, there's a short capsule of the highlights of Williams' career, including his winning homer in the 1941 All-Star Game, his "One Man Show" at Fenway in 1946, and his final home run in his last big league at-bat in front of the home fans in 1960.
Now you can get your own copy of both of these films, now available on video for the first time, for only $29.95 plus $5.00 shipping. (Illinois residents add $2.00 sales tax.) You'll get your tape within a week!

Ted Williams Baseball's Greatest Hitter
By Ann Burch
SeniorWorld Online Correspondent
"..All I want out of life is that, when I walk down the street, folks will say, "There goes the greatest hitter who ever lived." Ted Williams was born in San Diego, Calif., on Aug. 30, 1918, and became a legend in his own time. Batting left-handed and throwing right-handed, Williams, to his fans, is "Mr. Baseball." Known by numerous nicknames, those who admire the man and his sport, consider him to be what the game is all about. Appropriately, he began his baseball career in his hometown, signed on at 17 by the San Diego Padres, and playing in the Pacific Coast League. He then moved onto the American Association at Minneapolis. A cocky manner and disinterest in playing the outfield in spring training, 1938, led to his being farmed out to the minors. Frustrated, Williams is said to have retorted "Tell them I'm going to make more money in this game than all three of them put together." He was right on target. He arrived in the majors for good in 1939, breaking in with a double against the Yankees. He ended that season batting .327 average, with 31 homers, and a league-leading145 RBI, the first rookie RBI leader.

Williams, the last man to average .400 for a season, was pronounced dead on Friday after a succession of health problems. The "Splendid Splinter" twice won the Triple Crown and averaged .344 with 521 home runs during a marvellous career. But he had an uneasy relationship with some baseball fans, despite being lauded for his uncanny hitting ability. Boston legend profiled How does Williams compare to baseball greats Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Ty Cobb? This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. A book (I believe it was 'Summer of '49') captured both the best and worst of Ted Williams at the same moment. It said a heckler was bothering him, and he responded by hitting the fan with a foul ball. It showed his rough relationship with the fans, and that he was psychologically capable of doing such at thing. At the same time, it displayed that he was physically capable of such a feat!

Project Samuel

Longtail Publishing
Published: 10/2001
ISBN: 0-9677619-1-3
Price: $16.95
The book Project Samuel (Longtail Publishing) is the fictional cloning of the first human by a renegade biotechnology group funded by a rich Texas oil man. Their quest is the Nobel Prize in the 100th anniversary year of the Nobel. The person cloned is Red Sox icon, Ted Williams, while alive and without his knowledge. It involves stolen DNA and a surrogate pregnancy. It takes place in Boston and San Diego and became a popular novel after Mr. Williams's death in July 2002. The book preceded his death by 10 months and ironically predicted Williams's fate where his son is saving his DNA through cryonics in AZ for potential cloning. The coincidence of the fictional novel and Ted Williams's death resulted in Project Samuel going national in media exposure (including CNN) for three months. A compelling medical and sports-related read. A thriller with great potential as a motion picture. Many positive Amazon.com reviews, and NH literary critiques.

THEODORE SAMUEL WILLIAMS
August 30, 1918 - July 5, 2002 WE'VE ALL LOST A HERO

The world has lost one of its great citizens. America has lost a hero. The memories of Ted Williams will live on for years and years to come. The country was deeply affected on July 5, 2002 as word spread that Ted Williams had died. Spontaneously, many people flocked to the Ted Williams Museum. Countless others flooded us with phone calls, card and letters, all expressing their loss and many recognizing that we at the Museum shared that sadness. Ted's life, however, was one to celebrate - and the mission of the Ted Williams Museum and its many programs will be to continue to inspire people with the example Ted set and to encourage them to support the causes in which Ted believed. FENWAY PARK CELEBRATES TED'S LIFE
On July 22, 2002, a celebration of an American hero was held at Fenway Park and, as the New York Times described it, the occasion offered "his extended family, old teammates and Red Sox fans from all over New England" the opportunity not so much to grieve Ted's passing but to celebrate with stories, reminiscences and appreciations - some of what Ted Williams has meant to so many people over several generations. The event was very well presented and truly left those in attendance feeling uplifted by this man who had touched them. It remains the responsibility of the Ted Williams Museum to carry forward and give voice to the goals to which Ted Williams dedicated his life. WORDS OF APPRECIATION FOR TED

Boston's Baseball Hero, Ted Williams
by Guide John Maihos
Boston's love affair with Ted Williams officially began on December 1, 1937 when the Red Sox acquired him from the San Diego Padres. Williams was an All-Star from the start. In an exhibition game at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA, on April 14,1939, Williams banged his first home run out of the park. His last game was just as exciting. He hit a home run at his last at-bat on September 28, 1960. During his career, he hit 97 game-winning home runs with a total of 521 home runs. Throughout his career he was more than just a baseball player. He was a patriot, a family man, and an outdoors man, finding enjoyment in hunting and fishing. At the 1999 Major League baseball All-Star Game held at Fenway Park, Boston, and baseball as a sport, showed Ted Williams what they thought of him. t was a tearful night as people witnessed what Boston Globe sports writer, Peter Gammons called "a bonding of baseball generations - a sincere outpouring of emotion."

Like a long line of delegates waiting to meet the Pope, hordes of entrepreneurs and self proclaimed advertising gurus from around the world filled the home of John Henry Williams with an assortment of proposals for the remains of his father. TwistedFans.com correspondent Butch Rogaine took a survey of the crowd and summarized the most intriguing ideas:
Topps Summer of Ted Baseball Card Promotion
Conceived of by the same people who wanted to shred a Babe Ruth bat and put it in assorted packs of baseball cards, this campaign would put the ashes of Teddy Ballgame into one out of every 1,000 packs of Topps Baseball Cards. Anyone who opens a pack containing the cards and Williams remains earns a trip to Hawaii. In a tie-in with NBC's Fear Factor, any person who eats the entire contents of the pack gets a Geo Metro.

A respect for the game that I thought was gone. ted williams was baseball. Withthe passing of ted williams, America has lost a baseball legend.
http://twah.tripod.com/ramblings/rip_tedwilliams.html
Thoedore Samuel Williams
"There goes the best hitter that ever lived."
I cried yesterday. I cried today. I have shed tears over the passing of a man I never met. I never met this man, but in 1999 he helped me regain my love and passion. A love and passion for a sport that I had pretty much lost feeling for since my childhood. Ted Williams died yesterday of cardiac arrest . He was 83 years old. In a Peter Gammons article for ESPN.com, he talks about the burning bat. Williams said he could smell his bat burnign when the ball came off the bat a certain way. Mark McGwire, who was named to the All-Century Team along with Williams said he could smell it too when Williams asked him. But even more amazing to me is what McGwire said afterwards: "But can you believe that he knew who I am?" The picture to the left shows Williams at the introduction of the All-Century Team flanked by All-Time Homerun King Hank Aaron and Giants great Willie Mays. Williams had a way about him from what I understand. He commanded respect and attention. I read that he once did an article with Boston legends Larry Bird and Bobby Orr. Williams sat in the middle of the other two men, and was in control. Larry Bird and Bobby Orr, two of the greatest players in their respective sports ever. During the interview, both Bird and Orr called Williams, "Sir." That is the kind of respect he had. Ted Williams was to the city of Boston as Ernie Banks, Michael Jordan, and Walter Payton are to Chicago. What Cal Ripken Jr is to Baltimore. What Vince Lombardi and Brett Favre are to Green Bay. What BB King, Elvis, and The Beetles are to music. He is a legend, and icon. A legend that until yesterday was walking among men.
