In a career interrupted twice by war, Williams still managed to post incredible numbers. He was the last man to bat over .400, in 1941. He hit for power, average, and had a remarkable eye at the plate. He was the first man for whom opposing teams consistently attempted to come up with defensive schemes to stop him. TED WILLIAMS' PROFILE
FULL NAME: Theodore Samuel Williams NICKNAME: Thumper, Teddy Ballgame, The Splendid Splinter, The Kid BORN: August 30, 1918, San Diego, California HEIGHT: WEIGHT: BATTED: Left THREW: Right POSITION: Left Field, Boston Red Sox DO AS A DID, NOT AS I SAY: It is common knowledge that most great players fail to make great managers. With a few exceptions, this is true. Williams skippered the Senators from 1969 to 1971, following them to Texas for the '72 season. Thus, he was the first manager in Ranger history. He guided them to a winning mark and 4th place in 1969 (largely due to Frank Howard's slugging), but the team gradually faded over his last three years. He finished with a .429 career mark (273-364). Like Rogers Hornsby, Williams failed to communicate well with his players, especially the pitchers, whom he dislkied. REPLACED Zany Ben Chapman , the high-strung speedster. Chapman moved on to Cleveland in 1939, Williams rookie season. Doc Cramer and Joe Vosmik joined Ted in the Sox outfield for his freshman campaign.

S an Diego native Ted Williams tall, skinny and gangly joined the Boston Red Sox in 1939 following two seasons in the minor leagues. He came to a club that was already the best hitting team in baseball, but it was also a squad that lacked power. Williams got off to a bad start in the spring of ’39 as he was late in reporting to spring training in Florida. But by the time he left camp, he was leading the Red Sox in nearly every hitting category. He finished his rookie year with a .327 average. He also hit 31 home runs and knocked in 145 RBIs. The Kid, it seemed, was on his way to greatness. The 1939 season was also the start of something more ignominious: a long-running feud with the Boston media. enter site

Teddy Ballgame is an intimate portrait of one of the most compelling sports figures of the 20th century, vibrantly told in Ted Williams own plain-spoken words, and framed by more than 240 photographs, many from Williams’ own collection, revealing this American icon in all his guises – baseball and fishing superstar, war hero, father and elder statesman of the game he lived and loved
The extraordinary life of Ted Williams exemplifies achievement. Williams was driven as a ballplayer, courageous as a combat pilot and relentless as a trophy fisherman. His no-nonsense, straight-talking approach often ignited controversy, but Williams never flinched in his conviction that honesty, courage and hard work, not newspaper headlines, were the true measures of a man.
The Hall of Famer is revered as one of baseball’s greatest players and, by many, its greatest all-round hitter. The last major leaguer to bat .400 in a season, Williams compiled astounding career hitting statistics, including 521 home runs and a lifetime .344 batting average. He won six batting titles, two American League MVP awards and two Triple Crown titles, despite missing almost five prime playing years as a pilot in World War II and Korea.
At war, his squadron mate was John Glenn. At baseball, his benchmark was
