Honus Wagner: A Biography
by Dennis DeValeria and Jeanne Burke DeValeria
Reviewed by Gene Carney A sad fact of life for fans of baseball literature is that publishers tend to play it safe, go for guaranteed sales. So, we have whole libraries of books about Ruth and Mantle, about the Boys of Summer and Willie Mays, about Yankees and Dodgers and Giants (oh, my!) and to a lesser degree, about Red Sox. On the bright side, baseball biographies have grown up a lot since I lunched on them as a kid-was Creamer's Babe the trend-setter? Al Simmons must rate a book, along with Jimmie Foxx, Warren Spahnand dozens of others. I mean well-researched, well-written books. Like Honus Wagner, by Dennis DeValeria and Jeanne Burke DeValeria. Wagner was a Cal Ripken-type hero in the land of baseball for the first two decades of this century, when that land covered quite an area and heroes were made up largely of paper and ink. Ruth and later heroes ruled the silver screen and radio waves, while Mays and still-later icons were televised. Honus never was just a local Pittsburgh star. Now, at last he has a biography that is first-rate. And now Cobb has a movie? So maybe there is still a chance that Honus will make that silver screen Discovering Honus Wagner among baseball's earliest superstars was also a revelation of sorts: Greatness can come from anywhere. You don't need to be a New York Yankee, or even a New Yorker.

"Honus" By J. D'Abruzzo Thoughts of retirement entered the Hall of Famer's mind during the 1903 World Series because of a disappointing championship performance that led to catcalls from the crowd. John Peter Wagner, however, stuck around the game long enough to become a Pittsburgh legend. Growing up in Carnegie, Pa., "Honus" Wagner was the only ballplayer Hans Lobert looked up to as an idol while trying to break his way into the big leagues in the late 1890s. Lobert, who played semipro ball in Pittsburgh, even had the opportunity to be a teammate of his hero in 1903 after Pittsburgh owner Barney Dreyfuss brought the 21-year-old to Exposition Park for a tryout in September. Lobert, who later joined the Pirates and sat the bench during the World Series against the Boston Pilgrims, entered the Pittsburgh clubhouse on his first day and got the shock of a lifetime. "I was looking for Fred Clarke, the manager at the time, but at the same time I was looking at guys like Ginger Beaumont, Tommy Leach and Honus Wagner out of the corner of my eye," Lobert once said. "All of the sudden Wagner, of all people, yelled out, 'Hey, kid, come over here and use my locker!' "I told him I was looking for Mr. Clarke, but Honus wouldn't let me wait around and let me use his locker to dress. That was something."

Personal Finance ... Investing Baseball card nets $1.27M July 15, 2000: 8:43 p.m. ET Cyber bidding on highly-prized Flying Dutchman card hits a record NEW YORK (CNNfn) - An eBay bidder on Saturday paid a record $1.27 million for what experts say is the world's most valuable baseball card of Hall of Fame shortstop John Peter "Honus" Wagner. The price for the T206 Honus Wagner is the most ever paid for a baseball card at an auction, said Robert Lifson, director of Robert Edward Auctions, a division of Mastronet Inc., which sold the card through eBay. The online auction drew 13 bids from six people and attracted widespread interest in the baseball collector's market. Bidding closed at 7:37 p.m. ET. "Everybody's eyes were glued to this auction," Lifson said. "It is the Holy Grail of baseball cards. It is the Mona Lisa. There's nothing else like it." Bidding for the 1909-issued card started at $500,000 on July 5. There were seven bids as of Friday afternoon, with the top offer $800,000. Bids were in $50,000 increments. Five more bids came in on Saturday until the winning offer of $1,100,000 hit the screen shortly before the auction closed.

Then one day while cleaning out his elderly neighbor's attic, he stumbles on the world's most valuable baseball card, a T-206 Honus Wagner. Selling the card could make Joe rich, but the card has unexpected magical powers as well: it allows time travel so that Joe meets Honus Wagner, attends an historic World Series game in the early 1900s , and learns a few lessons about both baseball and living. Honus Wagner: A Biography
Last Updated 5 December 1999 Here's my review:
    Honus Wagner: A Biography
Some of the details in the book give the reader a vivid description of Honus Wagner: Physical appearance
"His legs were so bowed he couldn't catch a pig in an alley" (p 4).
"Broad shoulders, long arms, huge hands, and those soon to be famous bowed legs." (p 14) Some baseball men were put off by Honus' appearance; they expected him to be slow or clumsy. One executive wouldn't "pay a dime" for a young Wagner, and another wouldn't pay his train fare for a tryout. (p 40)
Manager Fred Clarke said when Louisville first obtained Honus, "He is a big, heavy German, with very large hands, and is powerful as a bull. He kills the ball..." (p 45)
    "...a one story brick house."
His "uniform was filthy, stained with a mixture of mud, blood, and tobacco Juice." (p 59)
In Louisville, he was called the mayor of the bleachers and the idol of rooter's row." (p 66)
Off the field, a likeable, easygoing fellow, while on the field, he is a fleet footed, base stealing hustler who was willing to play anywhere. (p 121) Playing ability
Wagner played every postion but catcher. Despite what position he might have settled on, Honus could have been a Hall of Famer at any position. He is without a doubt, the greatest shortstop to play the game. With respect to modern day heros like Cal Ripken, any all-time team that includes any name but "Wagner" at shortstop must be considered a suspect line-up.
