Honus Wagner Raffle Gross: $22.5 Million at Wal-Mart
by Dorothy S. Gelatt Sotheby's sold the pristine 1910 Honus Wagner baseball card for an eye-popping $451,000 auction record in 1991. Wal-Mart discount stores just made the upscale art auctioneers look like pikers by offering the card as top bait in a sports card clearance raffle that grossed more than $22.5 million! Treat Entertainment, hot-shot sports card distributors, put the Wal-Mart deal together in what was probably the world series winner of overstock fire sales. At last count, they reported raffle promotion total sales of "forty-five to fifty million" card packs. "Better make that forty-five million," said their spokesman, John Appuhn, who first reported only 30 million packs right after the raffle ended. There were 500,000 entrants! TV star Larry King picked the winning raffle entry live on his "Larry King Weekend" TV show on February 24—Honus Wagner's historic 122nd birthday. Surrounded by Baseball Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, "baseball legend" Joe Garagiola, and San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds, Larry King plunged his hand into Honus Wagner's old road trunk, owned by Treat, filled with 4000 eligible preliminary winner names, and pulled out a plum. "And the winner is..." Ms. Patricia Gibbs, 41, a postal employee of Hollywood, Florida. All the preliminary winners were notified to stay home by their phones that night for the winning call. Ms. Gibbs did that. But there was a glitch. Larry King reached somebody else's answering machine, and Ms. Gibbs did not actually get the call during the show. In fact, she did not actually see the show because she does not get CNN.

    Unknown Honus Wagner Card Discovered
by Lita Solis-Cohen "It is certainly the rarest Honus Wagner tobacco card in existence," said David Hunt, who runs the sports memorabilia auctions. It was consigned by the woman who found it loose in her father's scrapbook. According to Hunt's catalog, Wagner began coal mining in his hometown of Mansfield, Pennsylvania, at the age of 12 and began his baseball career on the Mansfield team in the Ohio State League at the age of 21. In 1889 he joined the Paterson, New Jersey, team of the Atlantic League before being sold to the National League Louisville Colonels in 1897 for $800. Wagner played for the Colonels until 1900 when he and 14 other players were transferred to the Pittsburgh Pirates. That dates the card somewhere between 1897 and 1899. Henry Reccius, a Louisville, Kentucky, cigar maker, ran a Union shop. There is a Union-made symbol on the top left-hand corner of the card and a long Union endorsement on the back of the card with the words: "Even the Devil can't stand the smell of a cooking scab on the griddle of Hell." The legend is that Wagner did not like tobacco and insisted his image not be used for its sale; that's why Honus Wagner cards are so rare. That may not be true. Wagner was known to use tobacco, but his main objection was he didn't want kids to have tobacco, so he did not want his image used on cards that would get into the hands of children.

Wagner tops poll on greatest SS
From Site Reports More than a third of the voters in an Historic Baseball poll chose Honus Wagner as the greatest shortstop of all time. Wagner, who picked up 36 percent of the vote, played in 2785 games in his career, finishing with a .329 career average, 101 home runs and 1,732 runs batted in. "The Flying Dutchman" hit more than .300 during 17 seasons and was a skilled baserunner, stealing 720 bases. Voters listed many comments praising Wagner, including these: "Wagner was fast, never gave an inch and he was a clean-living and good human being, in contrast to Ty Cobb, a real sleaze." Another writes: "Why didn't Wagner get 100 percent of the votes?" Ernie Banks, known as Mr. Cub, drew 24 percent of the vote. In 19 seasons with Chicago, Banks hit 512 home runs. He had five seasons in which he hit more than 40 home runs. He won the National League MVP in 1958 and 1959. At 6-1, he is currently the tallest shortstop in the Hall of Fame. One voter pointed out that Banks played more games at first base than he did at shortstop. Leg injuries forced Banks to move to first base in 1962 despite having led the league in fielding for the two previous seasons. Banks, however, entered the Hall of Fame as a shortstop and accomplished most of his feats playing the position.

This baseball is an official league baseball that was signed for a sports writer on November 14, 1947. The baseball was put away, and is in excellent to near-mint condition. Beckett's latest Collectibles magazine rates a Honus Wagner autographed baseball in this condition at $3,400, and Pie Traynor at nearly $2000.00. This baseball is truly an investment piece. Honus Wagner and Pie Traynor's autograph values have more than doubled in value over the past ten years, and are extremely difficult to find in this condition. There is no reason to feel that autographs of vintage Hall of Famers will not continue this trend. This baseball has an estimated value of about $4,000.00. Honus Wagner played short stop, outfield, 1B, 2B, and 3B. He was born on February 24, 1874 in Mansfield, PA. He died on December 6, 1955 in Carnegie, PA. His baseball debut began in July 1897 in Louisville, KY with the Colonels. He batted Right, threw Right. He was 5'11 tall and weighed 200 pounds. Pie Traynor played 3B, and SS. He was born on November 11, 1899 in Framingham, Massachusetts. He died on March 16, 1972 in Pittsburgh. His major league debut began in September 1920 in Pittsburgh with the Pirates.

Honus Wagner is considered by many to be baseball's greatest all-around player. The Pittsburgh Pirates' shortstop was a sensational hitter, a brilliant base-runner and a flawless fielder. He broke into the majors by hitting .344 in 1897 and batted 17 consecutive .300 seasons. He was the NL batting champion for 8 of those 17 seasons with a lifetime average of .329. One of the first 5 players inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame, he led the league in stolen bases on six occasions with a total of 720 steals. The Honus Wagner baseball card, one of the most valuable in existence today, was recalled in 1909. At the time, the cards were distributed along with tobacco; Wagner, a nonsmoker, objected to being included in the promotion because he did not want to set a bad example for children.
