The two things you need to know before you buy "Veeck As In Wreck" and you will buy this book, you must, if you've ever bought any professional sports bio before are the names Veeck and Linn. Bill Veeck you know from reputation the wacky promoter who invented everything from Ladies' Day to Disco Demolition Night. The man owned several baseball franchises (including the Chicago White Sox twice, for some reason), and was known as a both a promotional genius and a shrewd financier. As for Ed Linn... well, Linn was also the ghostwriter for another fantastic, edgy, opinionated baseball book, Leo Durocher's "Nice Guys Finish Last". Not surprisingly, "Veeck" reads a lot like the Durocher tome (and it came first, too!). On every page here you'll find a funny anecdote, a scary bit of prescience, and a unique look at an otherwise-beloved icon. With Veeck's memory and Linn's acid pen, this book is quite hard to put down. Or to pick up, for that matter.

Adventure Yankee Fan Memories Baseball Musings Great Games I've Been To... On Being A Baseball Fan April 27 2000: Book Review, Slouching Towards Fargo So, the other night, while sitting in the stands in the freezing cold wind of Yankee Stadium's upper deck, my brother gave me my birthday present, lovingly wrapped in a page of the sports section of the local paper with Ken Griffey, Jr. photo large on it. (I couldn't help but say, as I ripped the paper to shreds: "Omigod, I killed Kenny!") It was just a coincidence that that night's game was near my birthday and that I happened to be in NYC. Julian, ever the thoughtful brother, bought me a copy of the Major League Rule Book, which I have already used twice, and also another baseball-related book, "Slouching Toward Fargo" by Neal Karlen. The subtitle of the book tells it all: "A Two-Year Saga of Sinners and St. Paul Saints at the Bottom of the Bush Leagues With Bill Murray, Darryl Strawberry, Dakota Sadie, and Me." You see, there's this kinda zany baseball promoter named Mike Veeck, son of the late, esteemed Bill Veeck, who had once owned the St. Louis Browns, among other teams, and who was called "the greatest showman in baseball." The younger Veeck got blackballed from the game when both Veecks were with the Chicago White Sox, and Mike arranged the infamous "Disco Demolition Night"which resulted in a riot, torn up field, and a forfeited game. Veeck's only route back to The Show, like the many desperate, end-of-the-line players he would hire, was through the independent bush leagues, not part of "organized baseball."

By Geoffrey Wheatcroft ancy Mitford, who died in 1973, was not only one of the most entertaining novelists of the twentieth century but also a provocatrice of genius with an uncanny instinct for puncturing pretensions and probing sore spots. So when she began writing about her country's venerable and, to many, deeply offensive class system, in "The English Aristocracy," a 1955 article commissioned for Encounter magazine, she knew that she was taking on a sensitive issue. A cruelly accurate observer of the upper class, and upper-class herself (she was the daughter of a baron), Mitford was well qualified for her subject, and the

http://sportsjunkie.info/st louis browns.htm
Story of the Week When I was a kid growing up in St. Louis, we had two major league teams, the Cardinals in the National League and the Browns in the American League. The Cardinals were serious baseball; the Browns were sad. When Bill Veeck, the greatest innovator and showman in sports history, bought the Browns in 1951, they were the proverbial doormats of the American League. In fact, since the Browns’ inception in 1902, they won only one pennant, finished second just twice, and were a consistently terrible franchise. Bill Veeck knew that he couldn’t make the Browns a contending team, but he sure made it fun. He owned the team for three years, 1951 through 1953, and when the Browns were in town, I was right there at Sportsman’s Park with them. During those three years, their record was 170-292, but I loved every minute of it. I loved the Browns, and I loved Bill Veeck. Why? Veeck employed one Eddie Gaedel to pinch-hit for the Browns on August 19, 1951. Gaedel was 43 inches tall and weighed 65 pounds. The number on his uniform was 1/8 as in one/eighth. Detroit’s Bob Cain walked Gaedel on four straight pitches. Bill Veeck loved it. So did I; I was there. Leroy "Satchel" Paige was born in 1904. He was a legend as a flame-throwing pitcher in the Negro Leagues. (Remember, no black players in the major leagues until Jackie Robinson in 1947.) Veeck owned the Cleveland Indians before he bought the Browns, and in 1948, he employed Paige to pitch for Cleveland; Satchel, still regarded by many as the greatest pitcher of all time, was then 44 years old. He helped the Indians win the pennant and the World Series that year.

Edmonton Trappers
View From The Bleachers
Edition#18 (June 26, 2001) View From The Bleachers is a weekly column written by diehard Trapper fan, Wayde Parchoc. Each Tuesday during the season he will provide us with his thoughts on the Trappers, the PCL, the Twins and baseball in general. This week Wayde takes a look at how some of the PCL's top prospects have fared so far this season.
THOSE WACKY PROMOTIONS
Minor league baseball has always been creative when it comes to attracting fans to the ballpark. Crazy giveaways, special entertainment, and theme nights just add to the fun at the ballgame. I thought I'd take a look at some of those crazy promotions past and present that baseball has given the fans. It all started with the legendary Hall of Fame owner Bill Veeck. Bill Veeck bought the Cleveland Indians in 1946 and later owned the St. Louis Browns and the Chicago White Sox. Veeck is considered the father of modern day promotions. He introduced the exploding scoreboard, door prizes, and special events that started all the fun. Remember "Disco Demolition Night"? It was July 12th 1979, Detroit against the White Sox, when a huge pile of disco records were burned on the field. It got a little out of hand and the game had to be cancelled. Bill Veeck also gave us one of the more famous at-bats when he sent the tiny 3' 7" Eddie Gaedel to the plate for the St. Louis Browns in 1951. His miniscule strike zone drew a walk. Bill Veeck was eccentric, but was a respected humanitarian who loved baseball and understood how to entertain the fans.
