Executive Books and articles about Bill Veeck
Perhaps best remembered for sending midget Eddie Gaedel to bat in a game against the Tigers at St. Louis in 1952, Veeck was baseball's most imaginative promoter. He grew up in a ballpark and was never happier than when he was roaming the grandstand and bleachers, mingling with fans. An admitted publicity hound and an imaginative innovator who frequently upset other club owners with his proposals and stunts, he was also a sound baseball man who created winners in Cleveland and Chicago. by Bill Veeck with Ed Linn University of Chicago Press, 2001 Buy the book Chapter One T he press, for the most part, took the sane attitude that Gaedel had provided a bright moment in what could easily have been a deadly dull doubleheader between a 7th and 8th place ball club. Vincent X. Flaherty of Los Angeles pretty much summed up the general reaction when he wrote, "I do not advocate baseball burlesque. Such practices do not redound to the better interests of the game—but I claim it was the funniest thing that has happened to baseball in years." It's fine to be appreciated for a day; I recommend it highly for the soul. It's better for the box office, though, to be attacked for a full week. I was counting on the deacons to turn Gaedel into a full week's story by attacking me for spitting on their Cathedral. They didn't let me down, although I did feel the words "cheap and tawdry and "travesty" and "mockery" were badly overworked. The spirit was willing, but I'm afraid the rhetoric was weak. Dan Daniel , a well-known high priest from New York, wondered what " Ban Johnson and John J. McGraw

Bill James Author The most influential baseball writer in recent times, James is largely responsible for revolutionizing the way people approach baseball statistics. Through his Baseball Abstracts , which he published from 1978 through 1988, James examined and analyzed countless important statistical questions, such as the true value of the stolen base and the importance of walks, and he has introduced new methods of judging ballplayers through the practice of sabermetrics, a term coined by James himself. Among his other body of work, he wrote what I and many others consider the quintessential baseball history book The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract ; every fan should own a copy.

Chicago Stories "VEECK: A MAN FOR ANY SEASON"
"Suffering is overrated." - Bill Veeck He's known for ballpark giveaways, exploding scoreboards, and a midget at the plate. His oddball promotional schemes brought him public attention and unparalleled success. But to the people who knew him, baseball owner Bill Veeck was more than a talented promoter. He was a philosophical, caring man, who was dedicated to making the ball park a fun place to be. As the 2002 baseball season draws near, we've turned to our WTTW video archives to extract "Veeck: A Man for Any Season," Channel 11's 1985 look at the Chicago baseball legend whose radical ideas changed the game. Veeck began his Major League career with the Cubs, lost a leg in World War II, and came back afterwards to own the Cleveland Indians and, later, the White Sox. Each of these teams reached the World Series: the Indians in 1948, the Sox in 1959. (Need we remind you that was the last time any Chicago baseball team got that far?) Chronology 1914 - William Louis Veeck, Jr. was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, on February 9.

EPITAPH FOR A HUSTLER
Bill Veeck and Ed Linn excerpted from The Hustler's Handbook , G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1965, pp. 340-44 Hustlers and corporations have always been so hostile that personnel managers break out into a heavy sweat at the sight of you. Hustlers, I do not have to tell you, make dreadful employees. They tend to have ideas of their own, a practice which is frowned upon, and they have this nasty habit of moving in on the command post, fomenting insurrections and seizing the president's chair for themselves. But the corporation is wary of even the most benign of you. Corporate people don't have to be identical, they just have to be interchangeable. Corporations want tractable personnel who will fit neatly into their assigned slots whether the slots be in Rochester, New York; Rochester, Minnesota; or Rochester, Manitoba. Unsatisfactory as he may be as an employee, a hustler makes an even more unsatisfactory employer. In order to be effective, the hustler has to have full, freewheeling control. Once he feels the hot breath of the Board of Directors wafting over his shoulder he tends to turn sulky and fractious and bolt to the outside of the track.

Fantasy Baseball 2003
2003 National League Sleepers
By Rick Brooks Written December 16, 2002 I just finished reading Veeck as in Wreck , the autobiography of Bill Veeck, with an assist from Ed Linn. If you didn't get this book in your Christmas stocking, run - don't walk - run to the nearest bookstore and grab a copy. Now you're set for your winter baseball reading. With Bill Veeck, here is the bottom line: BASEBALL IS FUN! The stodgy old suits who run major league baseball should be required to repeat this mantra 10,000 times a day: BASEBALL IS FUN! They and their predecessors long ago took the fun out of baseball for millions of people by turning it into a business and only a business. And they ran Bill Veeck out of major league baseball for having so much fun that he proved every day what stiff old ironing boards they were. What is the fantasy baseball relevance? you might ask. Well, FANTASY BASEBALL IS FUN! If you cannot earnestly recite this motto, then you might want to seriously consider another hobby. If fantasy sports in general and fantasy baseball in particular has ceased being fun for you, then what in the heck are you doing investing your time and money in an activity that isn't fun anymore? Move west, young man - or something like that. What about the midget? you might ask. Ah, yes, the midget. I guess the politically correct term now is little person, but back then, he was a midget. Bill Veeck is perhaps best known nowadays as the baseball executive who sent Eddie Gaedel up to bat for his St. Louis Browns in 1951. Well, how can a perennial bottom-feeder have fun in baseball? Let me count the ways. There's sending a midget up to bat, and... and...and.... Seriously, Bill Veeck loved his promotions, which he called gags, and he had hundreds of them. What's wrong with a little fun at the old ballpark? Who wouldn't want to win a milking contest and get rewarded with taking home the whole cow? I sure would - wouldn't you? By the way, the midget walked.
