Those early years with the Mets were a heady experience when it seemed that these two athletes, with such limitless potential would carry the team on an endless wave of success that would provide fans with many euphoric experiences. Ultimately this proved not to be the case as both players fell victim to drug abuse and life. Now both are similarly linked in another chapter of their lives, this one being the adjustment to life after baseball. Gooden has retired and is expected to find employment with the Yankees and Strawberry is on the run from the law, a broken man. As usual, there have been and will be a slew of predictable media stories about both players. No doubt the search for Strawberry will bring about opinions of his behaviors past and present. Clearly it appears to me that Strawberry's predicament seems pitiful and precarious at this moment, as he faces a recurrence of colon cancer, drug addiction, and financial and personal woes. Strawberry like all others in his position, deserve both sympathy and empathy. Empathy is the more difficult of the two, because it involves internalizing his pain as well as understanding his problems. Something many are finding it hard pressed to do.

The interview took place after he had violated his parole and gone on a four-day drug binge earlier this month. Darryl Strawberry is a professional baseball legend, however, he has been on suicide watch. Why would a legend like Strawberry be placed on suicide watch? Well, that legend has had a few issues in his day: an abusive father, drugs, alcohol abuse, violating parole, drugs, spousal abuse, womanizing, pulling a gun on his spouse, fans turning on him, erratic play, financial debts in the millions, injury plagued seasons, drugs, soliciting a prostitute, tax evasion. Hard Learnin by Darryl Strawberry and Don Gold Berkeley, 1990 Darryl Strawberry tells the story of his life in baseball after the 1989 season through ghostwriter Don Gold in Hard Learnin. This book was not a big seller when it was published ten years ago. Some Met fans bought the book because Darryl was a big part of the Mets in 1990. I found this book on sale from a street vendor who had set up tent just outside the local laundromat. I had just put a load of laundry in the washing machine, so I was looking for something to read. This vendor had Hard Learnin marked down to fifty cents, so I bought it with few expectations. Darryl signed his first professional contract in 1980 and he made his major league debut with the Mets in 1983. He did not spent a lot of time in the minor leagues, but Darryl had remarkably few words about his experiences in the bushes. Sure, there were a couple of stories about Starvin Marvin in Kingsport and his unnamed friend from California who went to school in Jackson while Darryl played Double A ball there. His roommate Lloyd McClendon and his manager Gene Dusan at Lynchburg helped Darryl through his one bump in the road, in Class A ball. Darryl says he became so frustrated at his lack of progress that he did not show up for a game one day. He did not give us details, but Darryl tells us that Coach Dusan was compassionate and considerate.
