Ozzie Smith
Osborne Earl Smith Known as "The Wizard of Oz," Ozzie Smith combined athletic ability with acrobatic skill to become one of the greatest defensive shortstops of all time. In 19 seasons with the Padres and Cardinals, the 13-time Gold Glove Award winner set major league shortstop records for assists, double plays and total chances. He would develop into an offensive weapon, finishing with over 2,400 hits and 500 stolen bases. His ninth-inning home run won the fifth game of the 1985 National League Championship Series. Expanded Bio Did you know ... that Ozzie Smith was a high school baseball teammate of longtime big league first baseman Eddie Murray? Did you know ... that Ozzie Smith was born on the same day as Susan Butcher, four-time champion of the Iditarod, the 1,100-mile-long sled dog race run annually in Alaska? Osborne Earl Smith was born on December 26, 1954, at Mobile, Alabama. As a six-year-old, he and his family, which included five siblings, moved to the Watts section of Los Angeles, Ca. Though he played a number of sports as a youngster, he never played a position on the baseball field other than shortstop. Going unselected by any big league team in the free-agent draft after his graduation from Locke High School, where he was a teammate of longtime first baseman Eddie Murray, Smith had the option of pursuing baseball or basketball on the collegiate level. Deciding to concentrate on baseball, Smith attended California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, Ca. on an academic scholarship, where he walked on to the team.

OZZIE SMITH BIOGRAPHY Ozzie Smith is known in baseball as "The Wizard" and the best defensive shortstop of all time. He will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. Ozzie retired from baseball in 1996 after playing 19 years in the major leagues, the first four years with the San Diego Padres and the final fifteen with the St. Louis Cardinals. His nickname describes the way he played shortstop-he performed magic with his glove and performed in the infield with amazing acrobatic agility. Ozzie broke countless records during his nineteen years in the majors:
  • All-time assist leader at shortstop with 8,375 assists
  • All-time leader at turning double plays, with 1,590
  • 13 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, signifying the best at his position
  • Started at shortstop for 10 consecutive years in the All Star Game, and was the number one vote getter over-all for the 1987 and 1988 All Star Games.
Other noteworthy baseball accomplishments include:
  • Earned his 2000th hit in 1992, finishing his career with 2,460 hits
  • Consistently one of the toughest hitters to strike out and in 1994 joined his friend Eddie Murray as the only two active players with seventeen straight 100 hit seasons.

Ozzie Smith
Born: December 26, 1954, in Mobile, Alabama. Batted both, threw right. All-Star (14): 1981-1992, 1994-1996. Gold Glove (13): 1980-1992. Ozzie Smith, known throughout baseball as "The Wizard" for being arguably the best fielding shortstop of all time, redefined the position in his nearly two decades of work at one of the game’s most demanding positions. Always a base-stealing threat who would later turn himself into an above-average hitter, the fleet-footed and acrobatic Smith used his glove and athletic skill to make plays for the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals that often left those watching in true amazement, assured that they were witnessing something that had never been seen before on a ball field. After his junior year at Cal-Poly, the Detroit Tigers selected Smith in the seventh round of the 1976 free-agent draft; he did not sign and returned for his senior year. He would eventually sign for $5,000 with the San Diego Padres after being drafted in the fourth round of the 1977 draft.

(Links to the Wizard) I've always been a fan of number One, Ozzie Smith. Without a doubt, the St. Louis Cardinal superstar was the greatest shortstop ever to play the game. He played with his own unique flair and did things nobody had ever seen before. I guess the main reason I've been a fan of Oz through the years is that I feel a unique bond with the Wizard. As an eighth grader in Yuma, Arizona, I was there on his very first day of Major League camp with the San Diego Padres. As a matter of fact, I contend that I was the first person to get his autograph as a big leaguer. But making that bond even stronger, fate allowed me to be there for Ozzie's last game. Let me tell you my story...

Bill Mazeroski set the precedent, paving the way to Cooperstown for defensive wizards like 13-time Gold Glove award winner Ozzie Smith, who will be enshrined this summer.
A mere .262 hitter, Smith's defensive play was pure genius. If anyone deserves Hall of Fame enshrinement based on glove work, it is Smith.
His .978 career fielding percentage tops the game's greatest shortstops like Luis Aparicio (.972), Cal Ripken (.969), Ernie Banks (.969), Robin Yount (.964), Joe Cronin (.959), Luke Appling (.948), and Honus Wagner (.940). Unlike the other members of this elite group other than Aparicio, Smith played every game of his career at shortstop. While the others moved to less strenuous positions later in their careers, Smith remained not only the game's best shortstop, but the best fielder at any position.
Smith's cards have remained stagnant since his retirement in 1992. His '79 Topps rookie (#52) is a nice pick up for $20, while the O-Pee-Chee version gets $16. Smith's '01 Ovation bat card (#OS) is a great buy for $10, considering there are so few Ozzie memorabilia cards. Expect the prices to increase slightly by July, when Smith is enshrined.
Introduction to Japanese Baseball Cards The recent success of Japanese baseball stars Ichiro Suzuki, Hidecki Irabu, Kazuhiro Sasaki, Hideo Nomo, Hideki Irabu, and Tsuyoshi Shinjo has lead to increased interest in a relatively unknown segment of the hobby Japanese baseball cards.

Ozzie Smith recounted his rise to baseball stardom with an eloquent, creative speech. AP COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) Go crazy, folks! The Wizard is in the Hall of Fame. Fighting back a tear or two, Ozzie Smith joined baseball's elite Sunday, accepting his position in the pantheon of great stars of yesteryear with a wonderful speech that aptly described his storybook life. "This is tough," Smith, the only former player to be elected this year, said, halting to brush away a tear after his son, Dustin, read the inscription on his plaque. "I've faced many challenges in my career, and if I was to rank them by difficulty, this moment in Cooperstown would rank at the top of the list. It's almost an impossible task to express in 20 short minutes a journey that has taken me over 20 years to complete." Not surprisingly, the man who took the defensive aspect of the shortstop position to another level during his 19-year career accomplished that thanking everyone from his mom, Marvel, to his high school coach, to the man who brought him to St. Louis, former manager Whitey Herzog. Comparing his life to Dorothy's journey down the Yellow Brick Road in the Wizard of Oz and holding a copy of the famed children's book in his hands, Smith recounted every critical aspect of his baseball life and detailed what made him a success: the mind to dream that the Scarecrow cherished, a heart to believe that the Tin Man ached for, and the c-c-c-c courage of the Lion to persevere.
