The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes. Batting Categories: Hits/Avg, Doubles/2B%, Triples/3B%, HomeRuns/HR%, StrikeOuts/SO%, Walks/BB%, Runs/RBI, StolenBases/SB%, TotalBases/SLG%, RunsCreated/OPS%

Angels' Erstad Made a Run at It, but for 80 Years,
Few Have Threatened George Sisler's Often-Ignored Record of 257 Hits in a Season.
By: Jim Barrero
LOS ANGELES TIMES STAFF WRITER
September 15, 2000
It's merely a coincidence that one of baseball's purest souls owns arguably one of the sport's most basic records. But the fit couldn't be more perfect. George Sisler's audacious record for hits in a season, one of the longest-held records in the sport, is safe for another year, continuing a theme that figures to be difficult to ever change. The Angels' Darin Erstad has had a career year and was on pace to break the hits record for four months, but an August slump and injuries have put his quest out of reach. So Sisler's name will continue to live at the top of a list that simply wouldn't seem right without his contributions. In 1920, Sisler had one of baseball's most phenomenal seasons and 80 years later his accomplishments still leave even the most hardened of historians flabbergasted. The crown jewel of Sisler's remarkable body of work that season is found in three digits257.

Virtual Museum Famous Figures George Sisler
A first baseman for the St. Louis Browns, George Sisler had a reputation as an all-around great player with solid fielding, throwing, base running, and hitting abilities.
At the age of 28, seven years after joining the major league, Sisler suffered from a severe sinus infection that permanently affected his eyes and forced him to sit out the 1923 baseball season. Sinus infections, also known as sinusitis, are frequently preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Normally, mucus collecting in the sinuses drains into the nasal passages. However, a cold or allergy attack causes sinuses to become inflamed and unable to drain, causing congestion and potentially infection.
Sisler never played baseball quite the same after his infection. He eventually became a manager and then a scout for various teams. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Ludwig van Beethoven

He is probably the only player other than Gehrig who can reasonably be considered the greatest first baseman ever in terms of peak value. The reason I say that is that the other top contenders, most notably (Jimmie) Foxx and (Willie) McCovey, were the same type of players that Gehrig was, and thus they can be directly compared to him, a comparison that they clearly lose. But the man I’m referring to was a different type of player, he didn’t have the home run pop, but he hit for a higher average, was faster and a better defensive player than Gehrig, and the comparison between the two is not easy.
—Bill James, The Historical Baseball Abstract.
Who, you ask, was this great first baseman?
George Sisler was a star pitcher at Central High School in Akron, Ohio, when he signed his first contract at the age of 17, making him the property of Akron, a club in the Ohio-Pennsylvania League and a farm team of Columbus. Akron then sold Sisler to Columbus, which in turn sold the southpaw to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates demanded that Sisler join the team after high school graduation but Sisler had other plans, enrolling at the University of Michigan instead, where he played for the legendary Branch Rickey. Pittsburgh appealed to the National Commission, the forerunner of the commissioner. The Commission ruled that Sisler’s contract was null and void (because at 17 years old he was legally too young to have signed a contract without his parents’ consent) and declared the young pitcher a free agent. The future first baseman signed with the St. Louis Browns, who had hired Rickey to manage the team, and joined them in June of 1915 after three successful seasons with his college squad.

Baseball needs players like Sisler, Bancroft
MIKE BUNCH Collegian Take me out to the ballgame... Summer's coming, and along with it follows the memory of the smell of the grass, shouts of hot dog vendors, players with cool nicknames and the roar of the crowd. What does modern baseball have to compare? I guess the smell of green money, the heat of astroturf and stale beer spilled on you by obnoxious drunks. Today's games and crowds would be almost unrecognizable by many of the great (and often forgotten) players of past days. One of those forgotten players with an an usual nickname was one of the greatest batters in the history of the game, but he began his career as a pitcher. His name was George. No, not George Herman Ruth ("Babe" to his friends and the rest of the world,) it was "Gorgeous George" Sisler. Originally a southpaw pitcher like Babe, Sisler began his career in 1915 and faced some of the outstanding pitchers of his day. Twice in his rookie season he faced the Hall-of-Famer Walter Johnson and walked away with complete game victories. Not too many other pitchers could say the same thing. Sisler's batting skills soon overcame his pitching ability and, like Babe, he was moved where his bat could do the talking.

Through the first third of the century, Sisler was almost unanimously considered the finest first baseman of all time - in fact, in the late 1930s, Babe Ruth put Sisler at first on his all time team rather than teammate Lou Gehrig , or sluggers Jimmie Foxx and Hank Greenberg . His sharp batting eye and extraordinary fielding ability at first base led Ty Cobb himself to call George Sisler "the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer." Sisler had promise as a pitcher, but it was unthinkable not to have his bat in the lineup every day and his glove at first base - a chronic Brown weak spot where seven players had been tried in the previous six years. In the field Sisler was fast, adroit, and graceful, a combination that gave elegance to his execution of plays. He led the AL seven times in assists and his career total of 1,528 heads the all-time list. In double plays he topped the league three times, starting 13 deft 3-6-3 double plays in 1920.

      History
Inspired by the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University, the Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 1936 with the selection of five players: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) chose eight more players for induction when the hall formally opened in Cooperstown, NY, on June 12, 1939. They were Grover Cleveland Alexander, Eddie Collins, Lou Gehrig, Willie Keeler, Napoleon Lajoie, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. The location of the hall and the year of its opening were chosen because of the myth that Abner Doubleday had invented baseball at Cooperstown in 1839, although the myth had been pretty thoroughly discredited by the time the Hall of Fame opened. (See Doubleday Myth Elections were originally held at three-year intervals, in 1939, 1942, and 1945, but annual elections began in 1946. From 1958 through 1966, they were held every two years, then became annual once more in 1967.
