Saturday, July 28 Full Blog Archive Red Sox Notes, Rants, and Diatribes - Feel Good Edition Things are looking up in Red Sox Nation. Bret Saberhagen came off the DL yesterday and pitched a marvelous game; today Carl Everett returns; either Sunday or Monday Nomar is due back; according to some reports Pedro and Jason Varitek could rejoin the team in a couple of weeks. Life is grand.

Testing 2 Getting What He Deserves After watching the Red Sox self-destruct on two consecutive days, I took a day off from watching them play on Thursday. I returned to my normal routine on Friday and caught an awesome performance by Bret Saberhagen. If you didn't see the game, you missed a wonderful moment from a wonderful season. Saberhagen consistently threw 91-92 MPH with his fastball, possessed a perfect changeup, and exhibited exquisite command. It's too much to expect him to pitch as well in future games. Nevertheless, being a devout Red Sox fan, I hope that Bret can once again master his curve, stay healthy for the rest of the season, and finish his career by being a winning pitcher in one of the Red Sox's four World Series victories in 2001.

Saberhagen, Bordick Found; Bonafadiccio Arrested
LAS VEGAS, NV - The bodies of former Las Vegas Aces right-handed starting pitcher Bret Saberhagen and shortstop Mike Bordick were discovered Thursday evening, in a shallow grave in the desert outside of Las Vegas's city limits. Danny "the Magic" Bonafadiccio, Las Vegas Sun columnist and Las Vegas Aces' beat writer, was arrested late Thursday evening by the Las Vegas Police Department in connection with the grisly discovery. The charges are believed to be 2 counts of 1st degree murder and 2 counts of conspiracy to commit murder. In a statement by LVPD Sergeant Mitchell, it was revealed that Bonafadiccio was under LVPD surveillance for some time now. "Yeah, I was camped outside Mr. Bonafadiccio's house in my '74 Lincoln town car," Mitchell told reporters. "I was suspecting Mr. Bonafadiccio of being involved in drug dealings with renowned crime boss Gallano, but I never expected to discover what I did." Mitchell was referring to a late-night trip that Bonafadiccio took three days ago. Mitchell followed "the Magic" out to the desert, where Bonafadiccio exited his car, walked out to a certain area, and proceeded to urinate on the ground. When Bonafadiccio got in his car and left, Mitchell stayed behind.

Youngest Active Player Chronology When Hall-of-Famer Harry Wright played his first game of the 1871 season on May 5, 1871, he became the oldest person to ever play major league baseball. That's not to say that nobody ever took the field who was older than Wright's thirty-six. Rather, no player who was born earlier than Wright has ever played in the majors. Even with expansion, it's unlikely that Wright's record will be broken. As far as I know, there isn't a person alive who was born earlier than January 10, 1835. Pitcher Fred Chapman was the youngest player to make his debut (14 years 7 months 29 days). But the youngest person to ever play baseball keeps changing. At the end of the 1998 season, that distinction belongs to Pirates thirdbaseman Aramis Ramirez. Born June 25, 1978, he's more than a year younger than Kerry Wood and almost a month younger than Mike Caruso. No doubt, someone younger than Ramirez will make their major league debut sometime next year. One of the reasons this list is interesting is it helps to answer a question I'm frequently asked "who was the first person to reach the majors who was younger than me?" If you were born on June 1, 1969, the answer is Ken Griffey. Here's the list of players who have held the title "Baseball's Youngest Player."
