1973 Playoffs: Pete Rose vs. Bud Harrelson The scene was Shea Stadium, the third game of the 1973 National League playoffs, and the New York Mets were clobbering the Cincinnati Reds 9-2, looking to take a 2-1 lead in the best of five series. But though the game had long been decided, their was some excitement still to come. That’s they way it was when Pete Rose was on the field. In the fifth inning, trailing 9-2 ( Rusty Staub had homered in both the first and second innings for New York), Rose was on first when a ball was hit to the middle of the infield. Met shortstop Bud Harrelson made the force at second and crossed the bag ready top complete a double play, but Rose slid into him hard, taking out his legs. The two men ended up on top of each other in the middle of the infield dirt, rolling around like two cats in an alley. Rose ended up on top of Harrelson and soon the benches cleared and the field filled with Reds and Mets. The ensuing melee proved tame (as do most baseball brawls), though Cincinnati reliever Pedro Borbon did turn heads when he ripped apart a Met cap with his teeth. When calm was restored, the game continued. But in the bottom of the inning, as Rose took his position in left field, New York fans showed off their arms – pelting debris at the Cincinnati star. When a whiskey bottle whizzed past his head, Rose retreated to the dugout as manager

PETE ROSE
Pete Rose Chases Joe DiMaggio It was a midsummer night in 1978, June 14 th to be exact, when baseball’s best hitter began his assault on the greatest single-season record in baseball history. No man had seriously challenged Joe DiMaggio ’s 56-game hitting streak in the 37 years since he had set it in 1941. No man had ever had the consistency - the drive - the will to get a hit every day. Not until Pete Rose that is. It was in Cincinnati on June 14 th that Rose singled in the first inning off Dave Roberts of the Cubs. Quietly his streak grew, as all streaks do. First to 5 games, then 10 and 15. As he moved past 20 games and then 30, mostly with hits in his first or second at-bats, Rose was making it look easy. But it was far from easy, as Rose proved through out his career, he was a hard worker. As the streak grew, Rose spent more time in the batting cage, perfecting his craft. Soon the media took notice of the streak and a pool of reporters accompanied Rose and the Reds to every game, home and away. On July 19

53. A Rose By Any Other Name...
Whether or not pete rose bet on baseball is becoming irrelevant. Only rosetruly knows what he did, and to this day, maintains his innocence.
http://www.american-partisan.com/cols/cutshall.htm
A Rose By Any Other Name...
by Lori Cutshall, Contributor December 12, 2002 Over 24 consecutive years, he played 3,562 major league games, hit 3,315 singles, had 4,256 career hits in 14,053 career games - all major league baseball records - yet, he's a modern-day pariah. Why isn't this man in the Baseball Hall of Fame? In the last 13 years, that question has been posed thousands of times, and the answers have varied. Sportswriters, in the cynical way that only sportswriters possess, have condemned Pete Rose (right) as a has-been, a story only to be commented on when it's a slow news day. Baseball's elite, also known as Commisar (er, Commissioner) of Major League Baseball, Bud Selig, basically said Rose will be enshrined in Cooperstown when Hell opens a ski lodge. But fans across the country have protested, voted in polls, started petitions, organized websites, you name it - to see one of America's sports legends finally given the recognition he deserves. In 1999, during the World Series, the Baseball's All-Century team was introduced. Among the players who either walked, or were wheeled on the field, strode Charlie Hustle himself. He was greeted by a thundering fan ovation which lasted longer than any other player's. It was a moment in time not to be forgotten. Rose also appeared during the 2002 World Series for the game's most memorable moments. His breaking of Ty Cobb's all-time career hits record in 1985 was ranked number six, voted on by fans of the game.

Pete Rose was banned from baseball 10 years ago Aug. 24, 1989. Two things have remained constant over the decade: His longing to get back into the game he loves and his denial that he bet on baseball.
The Enquirer asked living Baseball Hall of Famers whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame. Duke Snider: Willie Stargell: Steve Carlton: Rod Carew: Pee Wee Reese (before his death earlier this month): What others said
One on one, Pete Rose was hypnotic. Was it because you wanted to believe him? Or because he was as good at telling stories as he was at finding the outfield gaps?
Rose sticks to denials; Baseball sticks to its evidence

AGH Atari 7800 Review:
PETE ROSE BASEBALL
by Absolute
Just to get this out of the way, this game is worlds better than that other baseball "game" for the lil' 7800, Real Sports Baseball . Man, that game was ugly... ick. Anyways, this one is actually not half bad, minus a few nasty flaws that keep it from being rad. Pete Rose Baseball goes for the more realistic look, and does a few nifty things that give it more of a true life feel than the other unnamed horror we shall not speak of again. Just for trivia, the guy who programmed this game did the music for Ikari Warriors . Impressed? Oh well. Anyways, this game has a bunch of different play fields, depending on where the ball is going (like bases loaded), and that helps make it pretty cool. The batting screen is that over the pitcher's shoulder view that was so popular in the day, and works pretty well here. Each outfielder has his own screen, and there are three different screens in the infield, for a total of seven. Good number. Good movie too, but I digress. The pitching is cool, as you can do a number of different throws, and change speeds and such. The one flaw is that you can't hit the batter. I've tried so hard . . . batting is very easy, because it seems the ball doesn't have to line up perfectly with your bat to connect, which makes life worth living. Home runs are pretty easy to hit, which is cool, but then you have to watch each of your baserunners plod to home plate like Marlon Brando on the treadmill. Anyways, expect high scoring games.
