The future is now
Brian Rose loves minor league awards, but his heart is set on a return to Fenway
By Jonathan Comey, Standard-Times staff writer
PAWTUCKET, R.I. Standing in the Pawtucket Red Sox clubhouse yesterday to receive his International League honors, Dartmouth's Brian Rose was the center of attention, but his mind was 60 miles away.
Accepting the award as the IL's top pitcher and rookie, he spoke of his Pawtucket teammates, his Pawtucket coaches, his fondness for the Pawsox organization.
But it was Boston that was really on his mind.
"As far as I'm concerned, I don't plan to pitch in Pawtucket again unless I'm injured," Rose said later. "I worked hard, trained hard this year, and I feel like I'm ready to contribute on a big-league level."
He's certainly not the only one.
Rose will go to Red Sox spring training in February as one of 20 pitchers vying for 10 or 11 spots on the opening-day roster, and brings some strong minor league credentials to the table.
International League president Randy Mobley, in from Ohio to present Rose with the glass trophy, summed up Rose's amazing 1997 season.

Administrative Staff Bob Bellizzi President
Team President Bob Bellizzi has been involved with Capital Region baseball for over twenty-five years and believes that Amsterdam is a perfect match for the Mohawks and the NYCBL. "The combination of a sports minded city and a General Manager (Brian Spagnola) who was born and raised in Amsterdam, makes this a positive and sensible move...it is our intention to bring a quality level of collegiate baseball to Shuttlewirth Park and provide entertainment and excitement throughout the season...the sense of cooperation and support exhibited by the community only confirms our belief that Amsterdam is an ideal home for the Mohawk Baseball Club..." Bellizzi, the head coach at The College of Saint Rose, has over the past quarter century, developed the Golden Knights into a national powerhouse at the NCAA Division II level. Saint Rose has made the NCAA Northeast Division II Regionals in 1994, 1995, 1997, and 2000. His 2000 team reached their ultimate goal by advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series in Montgomery, Alabama. Prior to that, at the NAIA level, Saint Rose made regional appearances in 1990 and 1991 and went to the 1990 NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.
