KNX has denigrated Bud Selig’s decision to protect the integrity of baseball by suggesting that political correctness was his motive. Instead of supporting the commissioner’s decision to discipline a player, KNX has played the "right to free speech card," and by doing so completely ignored the context in which Mr. Rocker spoke. Mr. Rocker must be punished. The short suspension and small fine was a start. I would add community service towards those he offended as part of his punishment. It would go a long way toward healing. You would think that "by accident" MLB would get something right. Yet, they are marvels of incompetence. The latest episode is the John Rocker story which appeared in a December 1999 issue of Sports Illustrated . In the mag, the Braves outspoken reliever slams homosexuals, Asians, women, New Yorkers, foreigners, Mets fans, drivers, some of his teammates, single Moms, and well...let's just say he slammed almost everybody. The story paints Rocker as a bitter, angry, impatient young man with little class and even less intelligence. He's basically a spoiled kid with a great arm. Baseball immediately reacted with outrage. Hank Aaron ripped Rocker's remarks, as did Brave outfielder Brian Jordan. Manager Bobby Cox expressed dismay, and fellow Braves pitcher Tom Glavine decried the mess Rocker had gotten himself into.
