Jackie Robinson
b. Jack Roosevelt Robinson
Professional baseball player with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-1956); first African American to play in major league baseball in the 20th century. Intensely proud of his talents and his blackness in a white-dominated world, Robinson created drama throughout his life. He fought racism viscerallyin his California childhood, at college, and in the army, where he faced a court-martial for defying illegal segregation on an army bus. When general manager Rickey Branch of the Brooklyn Dodgers offered Robinson the chance to break organized baseball's powerful but unwritten color line, the fiery ballplayer not only accepted, he also agreed to Rickey's condition: that he not respond to the abuse he would face. Jackie Robinson's debut in organized baseball is a legend (April 18, 1946, with the Montreal Royals of the International League, the Dodgers' best farm club). In five at-bats he hit a three-run homer and three singles, stole two bases, and scored four times, twice by forcing the pitcher to balk. Promoted to the Dodgers the following spring, Robinson thrived on the pressure and established himself as the most exciting player in baseball. His playing style combined traditional elements of black sportsthe opportunistic risk taking known as "tricky baseball" in the Negro Leagueswith an aggressiveness asserting his right to be at the plate or on the basepaths. According to his manager Leo Durocher, "This guy didn't just come to play. He come to beat ya."

U.S. Honors Baseball Great Jackie Robinson
By David Pitts
USIA Staff Writer Washington Few people can claim to have played a pivotal role in changing their country for the better. One American who earned that distinction during his rather brief lifetime was Jackie Robinson, the first black player to break the color barrier in U.S. major league baseball. The National Museum of American History is commemorating the occasion the day Robinson joined the then Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 with the opening of an exhibit entitled "Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Major League Baseball." The exhibit, dedicated to Robinson's fight for racial justice as a ballplayer and a man, will run indefinitely and is one of many tributes occurring around the country this week. At a news conference April 14, Museum Director Spencer Crewe said: "Few stories are as inspiring as that of Jackie Robinson. His life is an illustration of one man's ability to generate great change." Visitors will see Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers uniform shirt, autographed baseballs, and photographs highlighting his career as well as descriptions of landmark events in his life.

"Jules Tygiel's Extra Bases: Reflections on Jackie Robinson, Race, and Baseball History fills out and occasionally challenges the Robinson legend. . . . [Tygiel] is perhaps the leading expert on baseball and integration. . . . Felicitously . . . he stitches Robinson into the tapestry of his time . . . and presents arresting and satisfying anecdotes with his tempered analysis." —Alan Schwartz, The New York Times Book Review. "Among the highlights are a review of Robinson's tumultuous military career, an examination of the game during the Jim Crow era of racial discrimination, and a critique of Ken Burns' 18-hour documentary Baseball. . . .There is also a fascinating article examining the relatively recent phenomenon of televised sport and how it has altered our perceptions, to say nothing of the wealth it has created for participants." —Booklist.

Ruth deserves to be remembered for primarily what he did between the lines, Robinson for simply crossing the line. In 1947 he broke the "unwritten" color barrier and played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He endured taunts, insults, threatened boycotts, death threats, isolation, and immense pressure to become the best all-around player in the National League. He won Rookie of the Year honors, the MVP Award, and led Brooklyn to six pennants in ten years.

http://www.ocfs.state.ny.us/main/jackie_robinson/about.htm
Jackie Robinson, born as Jack Roosevelt Robinson, was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers. His mother, Mallie Robinson, single-handedly raised Jackie and her four other children. They were the only black family on their block, and the prejudice they encountered only strengthened their bonds. From this humble beginning would grow the first baseball player to break Major League Baseball's color barrier that segregated major league baseball for more than 50 years. Growing up in a large, single-parent family, Robinson excelled early at all sports and learned to make his own way in life. At UCLA, Robinson became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports: baseball, basketball, football, and track. In 1941, he was named to the All-American football team. After his college education was left incomplete due to financial pressures, Robinson enlisted into the U.S. Army. After two years in the army, he had progressed to second lieutenant. His army career was cut short due to a court-martial sparked by Robinson's objections to racial discrimination. In the end, Jackie left the U.S. Army with an honorable discharge. In 1945, there were few career opportunities open to a black man, even to those who had attended college. Jackie played one season in the Negro Baseball League, traveling all over the Midwest with the Kansas City Monarchs. In 1947, when Jackie Robinson first donned a Brooklyn Dodger uniform, he pioneered the integration of professional athletics in America. By breaking the color barrier in baseball, the nation's preeminent sport, he courageously challenged the deeply rooted custom of racial segregation in both the North and the South.

In 1945, Jackie Robinson played 2nd base for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League, where he attracted the attention of Dodger scout Clyde Sukeforth, then seeking a promising black player for Branch Rickey. After signing with the Dodger organization in late 1945, Robinson played for a year in Montreal, a Brooklyn Triple A farm club, where he led the league in hitting and led the Montreal Royals to a championship. Robinson joined the the Dodgers in 1947 as a 1st baseman, batting .297, stealing 29 bases, and winning Rookie of the Year honors. In 1949, he won the league batting title and was Most Valuable Player. From 1947 to his retirement after the 1956 season, he hit .311 and helped his club win six pennants and a world championship. Hastings 4th Graders Learn About Jackie Robinson and Negro League Baseball
To celebrate the life of Jackie Robinson and the forgotten players of the Negro Baseball Leagues, the fourth graders in Mr. Banaszewski's and Mrs. Penney's class created a digital story using the iMovie program on the computer. After researching books, videos, web sites and reading the book Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman students wrote reports on Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, and wrote letters to video companies encouraging them to include more Negro Baseball League players in their video games (see below). Currently, there is only one video game that includes players like Robinson and Paige. Students also wrote to Dan Gutman to tell him what they liked about his book and who they hoped he would write about next. As a class, students wrote a script for an iMovie to share what they learned about the life of Jackie Robinson and the Negro Baseball League. We discussed what worked best for images, video clips, audio, and most importantly what was said in the story. All of the students contributed either script, art work, editing suggestions or assisted in presenting the finished project. Here are some of the students' letters to video game companies and some of the responses they have received: Click on the play buttons below to view these student-made movies about Jackie Robinson and Negro League Baseball.
