Located on the site of old Sawtelle Field, it is a comfortable site for viewing UCLA games. The stadium was made possible by a private gift from Hoyt Pardee (UCLA '41), a classmate of Jackie Robinson. Without Hoyt, the stadium would not be a reality. Click on photo for larger version Set along trees in a natural environment, the stadium provides seating for 1,250 fans on aluminum benches with seatbacks. It can also accommodate many more on grass slopes above both dugouts and in the terrace area beyond center field. Each seat offers an excellent view of the symmetrical field. The eight-foot high Bruin Blue fences are 330 feet from home plate down the lines, 365 feet in the power alleys and 390 feet in dead center field. A warning track surrounds the grass field. The padded backstop, built into the base of the stands, is 55 feet from home plate, providing adequate foul territory behind the plate.

Background Information Jackie Robinson was born to a sharecropper's cabin on January 31, 1919. He was the fifth and last surviving child. The Robinson's worked for the Sasser family in exchange for their cabin and a few provisions. The family earned the equivalent of three dollars a week, which could only be spent at the Sasser plantation store. Jerry Robinson, Jackie's father, left the family in 1919. Later the Robinson family moved to California where Jackie's uncle lived. Life was better there, but the family was still very poor. Jackie's mother worked long hours as a domestic, leaving the children home on their own. Gaining an education was very important to Jackie's mother. Because Jackie grew up in a time where opportunities were extremely limited for African Americans, he had to fight for everything. Jackie's mother taught him that the future would not just "work out" but that he would have to stand up for himself at all times. He did. He had a temper and a fiery personality, which often got him into trouble. Jackie loved playing practical jokes that could sometimes be cruel. He was also the leader of the Pepper Street gang, he felt comfortable in the gang because the members were a mixture of African American, Japanese Americans, Hispanic, and some whites. The gang got into some minor trouble with the law due to stealing, and other unlawful activities. Jackie decided to leave the gang because it wasn't helping his life in any way. Sports probably also played a part in that decision.

October 31, 1989 Introduce students to the book Teammates by Peter Golenbock. Teammates is the moving story of how Jackie Robinson became the first African-American player on a major league baseball team and how on a fateful day in Cincinnati, Pee Wee Reese took a stand and declared Jackie his teammate. "Very early in the season, the Dodgers traveled west to Ohio to play the Cincinnati Reds...The Reds played in a small ballpark where the fans sat close to the field. The players could almost feel the breath of the fans on the back of their necks. Many who came that day screamed terrible, hateful things at Jackie when the Dodgers were on the field. ...When Pee Wee heard the fans yelling at Jackie, Pee Wee decided to take a stand..." In 1946, Jackie Robinson came to town for spring training with the Montreal Royals, the Brooklyn Dodgers Triple-A farm club. He was banned from playing in Jacksonville and Sanford, but not in Daytona. He debuted here on March 17, 1946. His first plate appearance came in an exhibition game against their parent club, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson then became the first African-American player in the Major Leagues. In the winter of 1951, the ballpark experienced a major facelift with most emphasis being placed on the field, fence, press box and clubhouse. However, in 1960, hurricane Donna blew across the state and did $75,000 worth of damage to the park. Some people suggested tearing down the park, but the city commission voted to restore it. In 1962, present-day grandstands and the current press box were installed, due to a pair of fans that fell through the wooden bleacher area during the singing of the seventh-inning stretch at a game. In 1999, Mother Nature showed her power again. Hurricane Floyd ripped apart some of the metal roof over the grandstand behind home plate. The ballpark then experienced a two million dollar historic renovation for its right field grandstands.

Jackie Robinson was a pioneer in desegregating baseball. He broke through racial barriers to become one of the most historically-significant baseball players ever when he became the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues in the 20th Century. Jackie, whose full name was Jack Roosevelt Robinson, was born in Grady County, Georgia to Mallie and Jerry Robinson on January 31, 1919. His middle name was chosen to honor former President Theodore Roosevelt. When Jackie was a year old, his mother moved her five children to Pasadena, California to start a new life. From a young age, Jackie loved to read and play sports. He was a regular visitor to the La Pintoresca branch of the Pasadena Public library. Jackie was good at sports, and he was very competitive while playing children's games such as dodge ball. Jackie's role model was his brother Mack, who placed second to Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics. He followed in his brother's footsteps by excelling in track as well as basketball, football and tennis in high school and college. In the 20th Century, Jackie Robinson was the first African American to do what?

    Jackie Robinson BORN
    : January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia
DIED : October 24, 1972 in Stamford, Connecticut Few can know what it must have felt like for Jackie Robinson to play his first game in Major League Baseball. Thanks to Robinson, countless other players to follow him didn't have to find out. Throughout history, baseball has been in a number of positions to affect social change in dramatic ways. In 1947, baseball began something it would take years for the rest of the nation to catch up to integration. Jackie Robinson was born in 1919 in the rural South. Less than six months after Jackie's arrival, his father left the family never to return. Robinson's mother packed up her five children and moved to California in 1920. Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College where his athletic skills were showcased. He gained entrance into UCLA and became the first athlete to ever letter in four sports baseball, basketball, track and football. He also developed a reputation as unwilling to allow anyone to insult him or his race. He was drafted into the Army following the Pearl Harbor incident only to find himself facing another situation involving his skin color. Robinson faced court-martial over an incident involving himself and a white officer. In the end, all charges against Robinson were dismissed. On Nov. 28, 1944, he was released from the Army because of a football injury.

    Jackie Robinson
Baseball Player Jackie Robinson, one of the most significant baseball players in the history of the game, got his professional start in Kansas City. While playing short stop for the war-depleted Monarchs in 1945 he was spotted by Branch Rickey, the general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Two years later he became the first black man to play in the modern major leagues. Robinson was born in Georgia and raised in Pasadena, California. A superb athlete, he excelled at every sport he attempted. He achieved stardom at UCLA, where he became the first four-letter athlete in that university's history. Following his discharge from the Army in 1944, he accepted a position teaching physical education at Samuel Huston College in Austin, Texas. The following year, Monarchs founder and owner J. L. Wilkinson , acting on a tip from pitcher Hilton Smith , invited him to try out for the team during their spring training in Houston. During his one season in the Negro Leagues, Robinson proved himself to be an outstanding hitter, a skilled and aggressive base runner, and was one of the best infielders in the league. His spot on the Monarchs' roster proved to be instrumental in securing his part in "baseball's great experiment." During that season Branch Rickey scoured the Negro leagues under the pretext of finding players for a new all-black league he was starting. Only his closest associates knew that Rickey was actually looking for just the right player to lead an assault on baseball's 60-year-old color barrier.

He had to block all that out, block out everything but this ball that is coming in at a hundred miles an hour and he's got a split second to make up his mind if it's in or out or up or down or coming at his head, a split second to swing. Branch Rickey changed all that when he signed Jackie Robinson sending him to Brooklyn's farm club in Montreal in 1946. The Dodgers brought Jackie up in 1947 breaking baseball's color line.
According to Seasons to Remember, "Robinson was far from a household word when Branch Rickey signed him just after the war ended. Black Players like Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson were much better known. But Robinson was precisely the type of man Rickey was looking for. He was young, smart , aggressive and disciplined enough to maintain his poise in the face of almost unbearable abuse. That was probably more important to Rickey than how well Robinson could play the game."

Artist: Michael Guccione Commissioned by the Baseball Reliquary, this icon depicts Jackie Robinson, who in 1947 became the first black man to play major league baseball in the 20th century. Until his death in 1972, Robinson, along with Martin Luther King, Jr., was committed to the campaign for nonviolent resistance against racial oppression and injustice in the United States. In their book Diamonds in the Rough: The Untold History of Baseball , authors Joel Zoss and John Bowman remark that Robinson’s "debut was the most widely commented upon episode in American race relations of the century in some ways even more explosive than the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., or the struggle for desegregation for it marked a cooperative attempt to elevate the American creed of liberty, equality, and justice for all above the time-honored American tradition of social and economic discrimination. And it happened in baseball where, above all, Jackie Robinson’s turn at the plate personfied the hope that amidst the reality of inequality, the American Dream really could encompass everyone regardless of race." Artist Michael Guccione’s depiction of Jackie Robinson as a 20th century saint is surprising only because we do not typically think of him in this context. Yet Robinson certainly belongs in a modern gallery of saints in the sense that an understanding of his struggles may help us find meaning in our own lives. Robinson’s oft-repeated quote, "A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives," challenges us to change ourselves and our world. Only the image of those who have themselves bridged equally wide fissures in the past can give us the sight, the hope, the courage that it will take.
