  • Born: September 30, 1926, Springfield, Illinois Bats: both Throws: right Height: 6'0" Weight: 190 lbs Elected to Hall of Fame by BBWAA: 1976 337 votes of 388 ballots cast: 86.86% Major League Debut: June 18, 1948
Robin Roberts was never a flashy or high-profile pitcher - he never struck out more than 200 batters in a single year. But he was steady, dependable and durable - for 6 straight seasons, from 1950-1955, he led the league in starts, and he led the league in complete games 5 straight times, from 1952 to 1956. He also led the league in innings pitched 5 straight times, from 1951 to 1955. During these great seasons, he was a perennial 20-game winner (he led the NL in wins 4 times in a row, from 1952 to 1955). He had a great fastball and terrific control, and was among the stingiest pitchers in the game at allowing baserunners. In 1950, he pitched the Phillies to their first pennant in 35 years with a 20-11 record. Roberts retired with 286 wins, against 245 losses. Like

Robin Roberts (Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976) was a pitcher in the Major Leagues from 1948 to 1966. During his career Mr. Roberts won 286 games with 2357 strikes outs, completing 305 games with a lifetime ERA of 3.41. He also had six consecutive 20-win seasons and was an All-Star seven times.
Recently, I contacted Jon at the Robin Roberts Website about this interview. Jon was so good to nBo Baseball that he let me ask Seven Questions! These questions were asked, and answered, through fax and emails. The email response is saved in the nBo Baseball archive.
    Joe's Question #1:
In 1950 you lead the Philadelphia Phillies Whiz Kids to the World Series. What was that great season like for you, the rest of the Phillies and the city of Philadelphia? Mr. Roberts Answer: Great season! We worked hard and we were also fortunate. Curt Simmons was called into the National Guard so we missed him. All in all it was the finest memory I had in baseball. Joe's Question #2: In 1952 you had one of the best seasons any pitcher has ever had. You won 28 games, Completed 30 games, pitched 330 innings, struck out 148, an ERA of 2.59 and you finished second in the NL MVP voting. What was that amazing season like for you?

    Baseball: Between the Lines
    by Donald Honig
In this oral history of baseball, which began with The Glory of Their Times and continued into Baseball: When the Grass was Real , the closer the players get to modern times the less interesting they seem. Is it the players themselves? The fact that in a media-connected world people tend to be more alike, and thus less unique, and thus less interesting? Or do modern scenes, with which I'm familiar, fail to hold the imagination as well as turn-of-the-century scenes, which I have to imagine? It's like the difference between radio and television. A baseball game on the radio can be more exciting because you live half of it in your mind. Television, on the other hand, flattens the world. "There goes the greatest hitter
who ever lived..." As in the two previous volumes, certain incidents and players keep coming up. Tommy Henrich remembers Spud Chandler asking about Ted Williams in 1939. How does one pitch to him? Well, the consenus was pitch him high and tight, low and away. The old words of wisdom. So (Chandler) went out and played. And Ted had a pretty good day. The next day we're talking again. What did we learn about Williams? Chandler speaks up.
"Well, I'll tell you what I found out," he says. "High and tight is ball one, and low and away is ball two."
