Earning His Stripes

Whoever coined the phrase, "lazy day at the ballpark," obviously never was a college baseball assistant coach. Just ask Fresno State's Matt Curtis. That is, if you can squeeze into his manic schedule, which seemingly is booked for all but a few predawn hours. "It's been an eye-opener," Curtis said during a brief respite between practice and a coaches' meeting Wednesday. "I mean, all the administration side academics, eligibility issues, budgets, game maintenance, practice schedules, alumni, boosters. ... "It's been busy, but it's a good busy." Rest assured, this is no list of grievances from the Golden West High graduate (class of 1992) and Visalia native. Curtis has been in la-la land 12-hour workdays notwithstanding since new Bulldogs coach Mike Batesole hired him as the team's No. 2 assistant in July. "I'm not complaining one bit, and I never would," Curtis said. "This is exactly what I wanted to do." Still, the former catcher admits some of the job's intense details caught him off-guard like an up-and-in fastball.

Charleston improved to 8-0 on the season, while the Pride fell to 1-1. Charleston took an early 4-0 first inning lead thanks to a two-out two-run single by Zach Strong and an error by Hofstra. Balcom had an RBI triple while Nix and Curtis added run scoring doubles in the fourth inning as Charleston stretched its lead to 7-0. Charleston took a 10-1 lead into the eighth when Hofstra rallied for five runs, but left the bases loaded when closer Jeremy Schmidt struck out Edward Cook to end the threat. The Pride were led by William Palmer, Jeff Alwine and Thomas Brown who had two hits each. Ryan Johnson (3-0) was the starter and winner for Charleston allowing a run on five hits with seven strikeouts over six innings. Schmidt earned his second save of the season pitching the final 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

by Gavin Curtis Summary Reginald's papa does not appreciate the amount of time he spends practicing his violin. He would prefer that Reginald be more involved with baseball, and be more like himself. When he makes Reginald the bat boy for his losing Negro National League team, he learns to appreciate the power of music and reaffirms his pride and love for his son. Background Building/Vocabulary This story takes place in 1948. Define what segregation is and explain that one way the world was segregated was in sports. At this time, the major league baseball teams were just beginning to be integrated. Before that time, there were Negro Leagues who would play in small towns and move from place to place for their games. The often were not allowed to stay in "white only" hotels and had to camp outside of towns. Pillars of Character Discussion Points Respect, Caring and Responsibility * Practice and perseverance are very important if you want to be good at something.

Deaf Athlete Offers Inspiration Cheers and a standing ovation greeted professional baseball player Curtis Pride when he visited the Clarke School recently. Profoundly deaf since birth, Curtis exemplified to students and staff what a good education and the ability to speak can do for deaf children. Pride knew it too. His message to the students reflected that - education is number one. "Out of the 55 players drafted by the Mets the same year I was, I'm the only one still playing," Pride explained. "You have to have an education to fall back on." Pride received a degree in finance from the College of William and Mary. Currently a free agent, he has played baseball for the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos, Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He told students to keep steady goals and maintain a positive attitude and their ability to dream. "Never quit. Never give up. I had to work hard and believe in myself," he said. "If you believe in yourself, anything is possible." After his speech, Pride answered questions from the audience and told a few stories of funny moments from his career. He then patiently signed every photo and baseball put in front of him. Pride enjoyed the experience as much as the children.

My Baseball Dream
by Ray Bergman Game 14 - Tigers vs White Sox at Tiger Stadium
August 19, 1996
Well fans, here I am back again after taking a few days off from writing to refresh my mind and to give my ailing knee some time to mend. At the end of today's game I will have completed the first half of the dream trip, traveled some 7,000 miles, attended 14 ball games in 14 different stadiums and spent 25 days on the road away from home. Bring on the sencond half of my dream! I feel like a 20 year old rookie coming to bat for the first time. I am ready to play, so put me in, coach and lets get on with the middle innings. I had a short drive today from Benton Harbor, MI to Detroit (about 200 miles). It rained most of the way and I was in heavy bumper to bumper traffic several times. The road was generally flat, green and lightly wooded. A little dreary looking. The roads in Michigan are pretty well beaten up due to the harsh winters. In fact, the state roads resemble a patchwork quilt in many areas. I can see why they call this area the rust belt of America. As I drove into Detroit on my way to Tiger stadium I passed old steel plants, manufacturing plants, refineries and other grey, gloomy, ugly-looking buildings. I believe that Tiger stadium is the oldest ballpark in the Majors and it looks that way. However, there are several saving graces. It has real grass and it is not symetrical. The outfield has some unique corners and right center is 440 feet from home plate. The fans are so close to the action that someone in the center field seats can carry on a conversation with the fans behind home plate. That might be streching it a little bit, but not much. Even the broadcast booths are closer to home plate than the middle infielders which makes for some interesting calls on line drive foul balls.
