"I'M NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING!" At the age of six, Curtis Pride played one T-ball game and then said, "I'm going to be a baseball player." Twelve years later, he signed a contract to play for the major league New York Mets. In the intervening years, he was: (1) an outstanding high school athlete excelling in baseball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, swimming, track, and gymnastics; (2) named as one of the top 15 youth soccer players in the world (the only American) and a member of the U.S. National All-Star Soccer Team which traveled to China to compete for the 1985 Junior World Cup; (3) a "Parade Magazine" high school basketball All-American and a four-year starter as point guard on the College of William and Mary basketball team. On every one of those squads, Curtis was the only hearing-impaired athlete. Curtis' parents became aware of his deafness when he was 17 months old. He was diagnosed as "congenitally deaf with a profound (95%) sensorineural loss." (In other words, he lost all but 5% of his ability to hear.) During the time Sally Pride was pregnant with Curtis, she was struck by rubella (German measles). The year was 1968, there was a national outbreak of the disease, and it took away most of Curtis' hearing. John Pride moved his family in 1971 from Washington, D.C. to Silver Springs, Maryland. Curtis spent the first three years of his schooling in special education oral classes. Beginning with grade 4, he was "mainstreamed" (put into classes with hearing students). He followed his mother's advice when being teased and pushed around by other students: "You can never, ever let them (his tormentors) stop you from doing what you want to do." Curtis finally knocked down one of them to earn their respect.

Curtis Pride Deaf Baseball player Curtis is currently the only professional (Major League) baseball player who is Deaf. He's not the first Deaf pro player, that'd be William "Dummy" Hoy, who, if you didn't already know this, is the reason for hand signals in baseball. Since Dummy Hoy couldn't hear the umpire, they started using hand signals which in turn helped out the other players out of earshot, and the fans in the stands...little history for yano charge. Right now there's a big push to get Mr. Hoy into the Baseball Hall of Famehope he makes it. Wait a minute this is supposed to be about Curtis. Curtis is an incredibly genuine young man who can run faster than a Ferrari. I met him when he came to NTID to make a motivational presentation to our studentshe was cool. Curtis Pride is the only deaf player in the Major League Baseball in the modern era. He was born in Washington, D.C., on December 17, 1968. When he was nine months old, the audiology test showed that he was born profoundly deaf. His family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland when he was two years old so that he could enroll at the Montgomery County Public School System's Auditory Services infant program. Pride grew up orally. Then he was fully mainstreamed from seventh grade onwards and he graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1986 with a 3.6 GPA.
Curtis’ athletic career at Kennedy High School was incredible. He set many single season and career records for soccer, basketball, and baseball. He was a first-team “Parade Magazine” All-American soccer player. He played in Junior World Cup in Beijing, China, in 1985 as a member of the U.S. National team. After the Junior World Cup, Kick Magazine selected him as one of the top 15 youth soccer players in the world.
The New York Mets, a major league baseball organization, drafted Curtis in 1986 and they has agreed that he could be a part time player so that he could attend the College of William and Mary and play on the basketball team there. He accepted a full scholarship from the College of William and Mary. He was a four-year starter as a point guard on the basketball team. He played in the Mets’ minor league teams while he was in college. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in finance.
In 1992, Curtis signed with the Montreal Expos as a free agent. He finally played in the major leagues for them in September 1993 after he batted .324 with 21 homeruns and 50 stolen bases for Expos’ AA and AAA teams in that year. After he hit a double in his debut major league game, the crowd at Montreal's Olympic Stadium gave him a five-minute sustained standing ovation. He finished that year with .444 for the Expos.

Atlanta Braves may do it with "Pride" BY THOMAS MAY When you watch the Atlanta Braves regularly, you get to know the players as you hear the announcers comment about some of the players' individual traits, etc. Quite often Skip, Don, Joe and Pete will tell of some of the characteristics or habits of the players that give those of us who are Braves' fans a better insight to the players. What some may not know about Pride is that he excelled in several sports even though he has about a five-to-ten percent hearing capability. He also was successful in obtaining a degree in financing while playing the two sports. Pride was in Bullock County Monday visiting his grandparents, Lensie and Sippie Pride of the Smuteye Community. When I asked for an interview with Pride, I did not know how well it would go talking to someone who could hear very little. What I found out was that Curtis Pride is not handicapped. He heard every question which made the interview enjoyable. Most of the questions hinged around Pride's baseball career now with the Atlanta Braves. This is his first year with Atlanta coming over from the Detroit Tigers of the American League.
