CURTIS J. PRIDE Curtis John Pride was born in Washington, D.C. on December 17, 1968. By the age of nine months, audiological tests confirmed that Pride was profoundly deaf. At the age of two, his parents moved to Silver Spring, Maryland and enrolled him in the Montgomery County Public School System's Auditory Services infant program. Pride was fully mainstreamed in his neighborhood schools from grade seven until his graduation from John F. Kennedy High School in 1986. In addition to graduating with a 3.6 GPA, Curtis Pride enjoyed an outstanding high school athletic career. Pride broke virtually the entire single season and career records for soccer, basketball and baseball at Kennedy High School. Pride was also a first team Parade Magazine All-American soccer player and a member of the U.S. National team that participated in the Junior World Cup in Beijing, China in 1985. As a result of his play in China, Pride was selected by Kick Magazine as one of the top fifteen youth soccer players in the world. Just prior to graduation, the New York Mets drafted Curtis Pride, who had already accepted a full basketball scholarship to the College of William and Mary. Through a unique arrangement negotiated among the Pride family, the New York Mets and the College of William and Mary, Curtis Pride signed with the Mets as a part-time baseball player while he attended college as a full-time student athlete. Pride was a four-year basketball starter at point guard at William and Mary and graduated in 1990 with a degree in finance.

June 18, 2001 - 5:30 p.m. Pride was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday by the Expos. He bruised his right wrist June 12, when he fouled a ball off a wrist while pinch-hitting against the Yankees. He has appeared in only one game since. May 31, 2001 - 3:23 p.m. TSN correspondent Stephanie Myles says Pride is being given every opportunity to make an impact as a starter in left field, and has responded. Fantasy Spin: Pride has a lot of talent. He's unlikely to have an impact career in the majors (he turns 33 this season), but he's just the sort of fill-in who could help you win a title this year or next. If the Expos keep playing, you might want to take a $1 flyer on him. (David Srinivasan/TSN) May 4, 2001 - 8:34 p.m.

Year In Review "Can you even name ten movies with basketball or football as a major theme? After "Hoop Dreams" and "Brian's Song," what have you got? "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" and "Necessary Roughness" is what." - Will Lingo of Baseball America B aseball America , with the help of Gene Shalit, a panel of experts participating in our Century Celebration, staff members and friends of Baseball America , set out to pick their ten favorite baseball movies. S halit helped them determine two key criteria: it's worth watching ten years after its release, and its characters are interesting enough to be enjoyed by people who know nothing about baseball. Here are their top ten. Ten Best Movies Poster Movie Major League (1989) The Sandlot (1993) It's probably the least known of any of the movies on our list, but It's by far the most charming of all the baseball movies featuring kids that followed "The Bad News Bears." A cast of unknowns, except for James Earl Jones, creates a fond remembrance of what it was like to play neighborhood ball together. A League of Their Own (1992) The movie is more about women fighting for their rights than the game on the field, but the women are credible as baseball players, except maybe Lori Petty. The movie also brought attention to a forgotten piece of baseball history, and it gets extra credit for adding the line "There's no crying in baseball" to the vernacular.

It is not easy to break into the major leagues in baseball, whether you are hearing or deaf. In baseball's early years, we had a few deaf baseball players; today, we have Curtis Pride. Deaf at birth from rubella and a native Washingtonian, Pride grew up oral, completed college as a student athlete (he also played basketball. According to an About visitor, Pride was an excellent soccer player who had played for the United States at the Under 17 World Championships in China in 1985), played briefly for major league teams, and has had a long minor league career. Along the way, he has compiled an impressive resume of community-related achievements. Pride began his career as a part-time New York Mets minor leaguer, and moved on to stints with the Montreal Expos (minors and majors), the Detroit Tigers (majors), the Boston Red Sox (minors/briefly in the majors), the Atlanta Braves (majors), and the Kansas City Royals.

Curtis played for the Altanta Braves back in 1998 and helped them go to the National League Playoffs Lisa is a television sports reporter and producer in West Palm Beach, FL. She has traveled all over the world during her career...sometimes because that's where Curtis is playing ball! In 2000, Lisa traveled on her own to Sydney, Australia to work for NBC Sports at the Summer Olympics. Lisa has also worked the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, a Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup Finals, College Bowl games (including a National Championship game), and many other exciting sporting events. Her favorite interview to date; however, took place in 1994 when she did a story on a young hearing impaired boy who was meeting his hero for the first time. Who was that hero? It was none other than Lisa's husband, Curtis Pride! Meeting Curtis was Lisa's first introduction to the hearing impaired world. She was amazed by Curtis and his ability to read her lips with ease. Lisa was overwhelmed by Curtis' confidence and courage. Here was a man that didn't bother to let his hearing loss get in the way of achieving his dreams - a college diploma and making the Major Leagues.
