Palmer High of 1939: Baseball's 'Hoosiers' Thursday, April 4, 2002
"My favorite player was Mel Ott, the old New York Giant," Milt Swiatlowski is telling me. He pauses. "How many people have you talked to who have told you that?" None, I say. Milt laughs. "Another thing," he adds. "My nickname as a kid was Babe. As in Babe Ruth. It's the only thing I had in common with the Babe." Milt Swiatlowski is wrong. He shared another thing with the Babe: a love of baseball. It's still his favorite sport. A retired pharmacist and salesman, he's a Red Sox fan now, living in Yankee country in New Jersey. Milt will turn 80 in August, but in his mind he can retrace his childhood steps around the bases in the old Daily News sandlot tournament. He was the youngest of six kids born to Polish immigrants who had a little grocery store on North Street in the Three Rivers section of Palmer. "I was spoiled," Milt says. "My parents let me play ball any time I wanted to. And when I was a kid, we played all the time. There were plenty of kids and plenty of time." Milt was a good outfielder with a strong arm who would occasionally pitch.

    91. Ott & Oh
The first thing that can be said about these men is that they could clout. Baseballloves home run hitters. They were mel ott and Sadaharu Oh. Beginnings.
    http://www.thediamondangle.com/marasco/peo/ottoh.html
The first time I saw a picture of Sadaharu Oh at the plate I thought "He looks exactly like Mel Ott." What I was looking at was Oh's leg raised high in the air. As it turns out, I was wrong. Mel Ott's swing involved his raising his leg high in the air and taking a big step as he swung. Instead, Oh would raise his leg in the air as he waited for the pitch. His batting stance has been compared to a dog watering a fire hydrant. The initial similarity between the two is a false one, but these men do share a lot in common. The first thing that can be said about these men is that they could clout. Baseball loves home run hitters. Cecil Fielder summed up the situation quite succinctly recently when he claimed that "the Cadillacs are at the end of the bat." Yet two great home run kings have been taken lightly despite their achievements. They both had the word Giants written across their uniforms. They were Mel Ott and Sadaharu Oh.
    Beginnings
In 1926 a seventeen-year-old kid from New Orleans got lost in New York City. He did the first thing that came to mind and went back to Penn Station. There he met the son of the New York Giants' clubhouse man. One teenager gave the other the bad news. Mel Ott was late for his try out and John McGraw was pissed. Mugsy didn't stay mad. After watching Ott take batting practice pitches over the wall McGraw knew he had a future Hall of Famer. McGraw also knew something else; if he sent the kid to the minors some scrub manager would try to "correct" Mel's funky high leg kick. Realizing that this could ruin Ott's career McGraw made a decision. For the rest of the year Ott would be on the roster, but would not see much play. He would sit next to John McGraw on the bench and learn baseball.

Dear Joe, Of all the great hitter in the past, there is so much speculation about how much they were aided by their home field. Two players I am wondering about are Mel Ott and Chuck Klein. Both homerun hitting lefties who played their home games, and enjoyed most of their success, in fields with short RF fences. What part, if any, do you think these parks played in these players careers? Thanks for your time, Morgan D. Joe Mock's Response Morgan, Thanks for writing me at the Baseball Guru. A lot has been written about Mel Ott and how his hitting stats were probably aided by his home park, so I decided to delve first into Chuck Klein. As you probably know, his career looks like this: Years Team Home park 1928 through 1933 Phils Baker Bowl 1934 through mid '36 Cubs Wrigley mid '36 through mid '38 Phils Baker Bowl mid '38 through mid '39 Phils Shibe Park mid '39 through end '39 Pirates Forbes Field 1940 through 1944 Phils Shibe Park All of this moving around makes analysis tricky (the Phils did keep trading to get him back, didn't they!). And the stats I looked at didn't differentiate between home and away ... so let's make the following assumptions:
