Thursday, January 10, 2002 O'Neill finds way to stay in game He'll serve as part-time analyst on Yanks telecasts

By Gary Estwick
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Paul O'Neill gave up his New York Yankees cap, but he has replaced it with a headset. O'Neill, a popular outfielder for the Reds from 1985-92 and then for the Yankees during their return to glory, will work as a pre- and postgame analyst on the YES Network, a regional cable network being launched by the Yankees in March. He added that he didn't want to make his family move again.

    O'Neill Moves on Gracefully
    New York Times
    BY: Ira Berkow
The tall man with the familiar gentle face, his 8-year-old son at his side, entered Yankee Stadium for the last time yesterday morning as a member of the Yankees. He happened to glance ahead, and through the tunnel he noticed a piecemeal view of the park. How bright the green grass looked in the sunshine, he thought, how beautiful.
He allowed himself now a pang of nostalgia - not regret, but a sweet remembrance of things past, of the excitement of games and pennant races that never paled for him. He had rarely taken notice of this sight through all these years when hurrying from the players' entrance to the locker room, but on this day, this bittersweet ending, he paused.
Paul O'Neill had come back to the Stadium to pack up the contents of his locker. He will not be back. After 21 years as a professional baseball player, 17 years in the majors, the last 9 as a Yankee, the man many consider - pardon the platitude - the heart and soul of championship teams (five World Series appearances witht the Yankees) and championship attitudes as well as right-fielder exemplar and left-handed clutch hitter in the middle of the lineup, is retiring, at age 38.
"Feels strange," he said, in sweatshirt and jeans, as, with a little help from his son Aaron he placed items into a large cardboard box that will be sent to his home in Cincinatti. "I've never cleaned out my locker before. I mean, everything. And I didn't work out today. Usually, right after the last game, you go back to working out, preparing for next season."

award in a small way helps promote baseball in Canada Blue Jays' Pitcher of the Year, paul Quantrill (London Past winners of the CBHFM's James Tip o'neill Award
    http://www.canadianbaseballnews.com/StMary's/waltiponeill.html
Larry Walker was presented with the 2001 Tip O'Neill Award on Saturday, June 8, at SkyDome prior to the Rockie/Blue Jays game. The James "Tip" O'Neill Award is presented annually by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum to the Canadian player judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to the highest ideals of the game of baseball. Walker, the only player to win the award more than once, split the 2001 award with Minnesota Twins slugger Corey Koskie. The eight-time winner Walker, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, is also the only Canadian to win a batting title since O'Neill led the majors in hitting with his .492 average in 1887, the highest single-season average ever recorded. O'Neill's feat was accomplished when bases on balls were counted as hits, but even when his average is computed according to today's standards, he batted .435, the second highest of all-time behind Hugh Duffy (.438 in 1894). Walker, who batted .351 in 2001, along with 38 homers and 123 RBI, was named to the NL All-Star team for the 5th time, and was awarded his 6th Gold Glove. "Again, I am honoured and proud to be selected by the Canadian Hall of Fame for this award," said Walker upon being told the news of the award. "My hope is that this award in a small way helps promote baseball in Canada." "We had the unique and very pleasant problem of deciding which Canadian to honour when, truly, a solid case could be made for any of the top five finalists," said Tom Valcke, President/CEO of the CBHFM. "It took more than a century for the second Canadian to win a batting title, so we would have been remiss not to have Larry's name all over this trophy."

O'Neill plays final game in pinstripes
    Associated Press
NEW YORK The backbone of the Yankees said goodbye to his fans Thursday night. An emotional Paul O'Neill tips his cap to the Yankee Stadium fans for the final time in pinstripes. For nine years, Paul O'Neill showed his teammates how to win, how not to give up. Also, how to throw helmets and bats, kick benches and punch walls. And finally, after the Yankees' 3-2, 12-inning win over Arizona in World Series Game 5 Thursday night, O'Neill finally admitted what everybody knew: He will retire after this weekend. "I can't think of a better way to go out in my last game at Yankee Stadium," O'Neill said. Given his choice, he would rather watch attention directed elsewhere. Go out, do your job. Succeed and credit your teammates or lose and blame it on your own failure to come through. He got a standing ovation on the very first play of the game, when he gloved

    Right Field
    New York Yankees Profile
2001 SEASON STATISTICS GM HR RBI R SB AVG Even though his career had effectively ended, O'Neill stood in the dugout working on his swing. A professional to the end. While he did not achieve the career marks of baseball's better known retirees this season ( Cal Ripken Jr. Tony Gwynn and possibly Mark McGwire ), O'Neil made his mark. He won the 1994 batting title and more importantly, he won five world championships, one with Cincinnati in 1990 and the rest with the Yankees in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. He finished one inning short of a sixth when the Diamondbacks rallied in the bottom of the ninth to beat O'Neill's Yankees 3-2. "We were world champions with three outs to go," O'Neill said at his locker. "And we had the best reliever in the history of the postseason on the mound. When you get beat under those circumstances, sure, you're disappointed but I'm also just happy to walk into this clubhouse with this group of guys. It's awesome."
