Japan's Nomo Hideo Is Beating the Americans at Their Own Game Q UESTION: WHAT'S THE GOOD NEWS FOR JAPANESE THESE DAYS? ANSWER: THE TORNADO. That's not a typhoon raging in the Pacific but the nickname for Nomo Hideo a 26-year-old Japanese rookie pitcher who has taken American baseball by storm. In a year that has been marked by a string of disasters, including the Kobe earthquake, the Tokyo subway gassing, a sluggish economy and weak political leadership, news of Nomo is just what many Japanese need to lift their sagging spirits. These days not an hour goes by in Japan without someone mentioning his name on television. Says Tokyo sports writer Niomiya Seijun: "His single pitch is worth more than 100 visits of Prime Minister Murayma to Washington." Indeed, in just five months with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Osaka-born pitcher has spawned a huge fan club in the U.S. as well as Japan. At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles a fortnight ago, Nomo led the team to a 7-0 victory over the archrival San Francisco Giants. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 53,551 the largest this season. The fact that this happened at a time when many baseball fans are staying home to punish players for their protracted strike last year was considered little short of a miracle. "Nomo fever hits L.A.," read a headline in one newspaper. Declared sportswriter Bob Nightengale of the Los Angeles Times: "Nomo is creeping toward immortality."

" TARGET="_blank"> " BORDER=0> GOLDSEA ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES IS BYUNG-HYUN KIM ANOTHER HIDEO NOMO? nly an Arizona Diamondbacks rally in the 9th inning of Game 7 spared Byung-Hyun Kim the ignominy of being labeled the first Asian pitcher ever to cost his team the World Series. It was a nightmare season finish for a 22-year-old prodigy who had begun his major league career so brilliantly less than two years earlier.
In college Kim was Number 1 on the Corean National team, even ahead of Chanho Park, four years his senior. Signed by the Diamondbacks in the spring of 1999, Kim outperformed for two farm teams before being called up in May 2000 to pitch relief. A rising fastball served up via an unnerving, nearly underarm motion quickly earned him the rap of being tough to hit. He racked up 111 kills in 70.2 innings while giving up only 52 runs. And he was all of 21.
By mid-2000 there was even talk of a slot on the All-Star team. The talk stopped in July when he was sent down to Tucson. Kim returned two weeks later to show enough improvement to become the top contender for the closer job. By season's end he made it known to a skeptical Bob Brenly that he was ready to start.
The 2001 season magnified Kim's promise and problems. His 93-mph underarm fastball could retire batters like clockwork except when he threw too many balls, took too long to unload pitches, didn't challenge the batters enough. After a rocky spring and an impressive summer Kim hit the skids in September by giving up a series of crucial homers. Brenly kept the faith into the World Series with nearly disastrous consequences.

This combined with an awesome fastball and one of the best split-finger pitches in the game make him a formidable opponent. But he actually spent his first few years playing in Japan's minor leagues, with the highlight being a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics , where he played in one game as a pinch runner. He was selected by the Kintetsu Buffaloes , based in his hometown of Osaka, in the 1989 free-agent draft at the age of 21. After leading the league in wins (18), strikeouts (287), and ERA (2.91), Nomo easily won that season's MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. Over the next five years he compiled a record of 78 wins against 46 losses, leading the league each year in wins and strikouts. Nomo's career has had its ups and downs since he moved to the US to play for the LA Dodgers in 1995. As only the second-ever Japanese player to play in the Major leagues and the first in 30 years, he was the focus of huge media attention, something he was never too fond of. But in addition to helping the Dodgers win the National League West that season, he was named Rookie of the Year and started the All-Star game. A subsequent loss of form and transfers to a string of other teams (

There are two leagues, the Central League and the Pacific League . Each league has six teams who play each other 27 times in the April-October season for a total of 135 games. The winners of each league face one another in the Japan Series in October to decide the championship team. The popularity of the sport tends to ebb and flow with the rise and fall of famous players and the changing fortunes of the Yomiuri Giants , the country's most popular team. Baseball was first introduced to Japan in 1873 at Kaisei Gakko, now Tokyo University. The sport quickly spread among universities and middle schools and became the country's biggest school sport. Today, the two national high school tournaments (the National Invitational Senior High School Baseball Tournament and the All-Japan High School Baseball Championship Tournament) held in spring and summer are hugely popular. Over 4,000 high school teams take part in regional qualifiers. Teams representing each prefecture battle it out at

My television set broke last year and I have never bothered to fix it, so these days whenever there is a program I want to watch, I have to go over to a friend's house. It's not often that I invite myself into someone's living room for a television event, but Hideo Nomo's pitching debut for the Boston Red Sox was one of those rare occasions. On April 4th at 7 pm, I drove to Boston to the apartment of my friend Steve. He is a staunch Red Sox fan and didn't need any convincing to tune in to the game. Steve showed me into the living room, and then took his place on the couch next to his roommates, Paul and Michael. I shooed one of Michael's cats off a chair and took a seat for the opening pitch. Chips and beer were laid out on the coffee table. They had all started drinking beer after a long day at work, and their cheeks were pink from the moderate consumption of alcohol. They appeared relaxed, but I was nervous. "You know how good Nomo is, right?" I asked.
