Another member of that class, and a prep teammate of Murray's, is Ozzie Smith, who was the only Hall of Fame inductee last summer. Yet another Californian, catcher Gary Carter, also wins induction vote. Why couldn't Ozzie Smith have played one more year of his illustrious career as shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals? Or why couldn't Eddie Murray have retired one year earlier as a legendary homer-hitting switch hitter? If the two had retired after the same season, it's likely they would have been standing together as the only inductees into the most prestigious Hall of Fame in all of sports. Imagine that. Two guys from the same high school team going into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame at the same time.

Indians' Eddie Murray Elected To Hall Of Fame Hitting Coach Gets In On 1st Year Of Eligibility POSTED: 3:02 p.m. EST January 7, 2003 NEW YORK Eddie Murray has been elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility and Gary Carter made it on his sixth try. "I am thrilled by the tremendous honor of being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and joining the other greats of the game," Murray said. "For those with whom I shared space on the playing field and in the clubhouse, I share this honor with you." No one else came close in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Murray made his mark as a first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles. He became the 38th player picked as a first-timer. He was chosen on 85 percent of the ballots 75 percent are needed for election. Murray is currently the Cleveland Indians' hitting coach. A press conference to introduce Murray will be held next week in New York. He is attending the funeral of his sister, who died after a battle with kidney disease. "Unfortunately, I cannot speak with you today because of the passing last week of my younger sister, Tanja after, her long-fought battle with kidney disease," Murray said. "Although I dedicated my professional career to the game, I have dedicated my life to my family. The elation I feel by being recognized for my achievements on the field is overshadowed by the anguish of losing someone so dear to me. Once again, thank you for this incredible honor and I appreciate your understanding during this most difficult time."

Eddie Murray recalls 1995 Tribe with fond memories
Roger Negin
T he Chronicle-Telegram
An Orioles hat will be on his head, but there’ll be a special niche for the 1995 Cleveland Indians in Eddie Murray’s heart when he is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27. AP Eddie Murray, one of the inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, laughs during a news conference in New York Thursday. Murray was already a legend when the Indians signed him as a free agent in 1994 with the hope that his maturity and will to win would rub off on the youthful Tribe, gunning for the organization’s first postseason appearance in more than four decades. But Murray admitted that it went both ways. “That was a wild and energetic group and they energized me,” he said. “I was going from first to third (on a hit). We definitely had talent. It was a fun time, a fun group. The energy had to be channeled to itself.”

Murray deserves attention, praise for monumental accomplishment
By Will McCahill
Daily Sports Writer In the lexicon of baseball, they are two of the biggest names. Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. Names which conjure up images of long home runs flying through the moist Atlanta air, or of spectacular, diving catches. Aaron and Mays were, until recently, the only two players in the history of the great game to compile at least 3,000 hits and 500 homers. Last Friday night in Baltimore, a newcomer etched his name onto the duo's rock of ages. When Eddie Murray knocked one into the right-field seats at Camden Yards, he entered a very elite crowd. The spotlight had been very bright and very hot on the 40-year-old Murray in the weeks leading up to the Big Knock, and anyone who follows baseball must certainly feel some of his relief. For those of us who have followed Murray for a while, there is certainly that relief, but also a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at seeing him reach this unthinkably high plateau. When I first started following baseball at the tender age of seven, I so happened to be living in a suburb of Washington, DC.

American League baseball update
Wednesday, Jan 8, 2003 By DAVE SHEININ
The Washington Post BASEBALL
Hall calls for Murray, Carter Former Baltimore Orioles first baseman Eddie Murray, a man of two swings, many accomplishments and few words, was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame yesterday in his first year of eligibility. Murray will be joined in the Cooperstown Class of 2003 by catcher Gary Carter, who finally made it on his sixth try. Murray, a switch-hitter who spent 121/2 of his 21 major-league seasons with the Orioles, became the 38th player to be elected to Cooperstown in his first year of eligibility. He was named on 423 of the 496 ballots (85.3 percent) cast by 10-year members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, while Carter was named on 387 ballots (78 percent). To be elected, a player must be named on at least 75 percent. Murray's joyous news coincided with a somber occasion, as he was in his hometown of Los Angeles attending the funeral of his younger sister, Tanya, who died Jan. 2 at the age of 38 from kidney disease. "I am thrilled by the tremendous honor of being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame," Murray said in a statement, "and joining the other greats of the game. For those with whom I shared space on the playing field and in the clubhouse, I share this honor with you. ... Although I dedicated my professional career to the game, I have dedicated my life to my family. The elation I feel by being recognized for my achievements on the field is overshadowed by the anguish of losing someone so dear to me."
