Born: February 24, 1956, in Los Angeles, California. Batted both, threw right. All-Star (8): 1978, 1981-1986, 1991. Gold Glove (3): 1982-1984. Consistency, durability, and longevity. Those are three attributes that characterized the career of Eddie Murray, who was one of baseball's most productive hitters from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. Those attributes, along with a Rookie of the Year Award, three Gold Glove awards, six consecutive top-10 finishes in the MVP voting, a World Series ring, and inclusion in both the 3000-hit and 500-home run clubs have helped make Murray worthy of baseball's highest honor-membership in the National Baseball Hall of Fame Born in Los Angeles on February 24, 1956, Eddie Clarence Murray exhibited big league talents at a young age. He grew up in a baseball family, with brother Rich also making the major leagues (as a member of the San Francisco Giants ) and three other brothers enjoying minor league careers. As a star player at Locke High School, Murray shared the dugout with fellow Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith , who preceded Murray's election to the Cooperstown shrine one year earlier.

Eddie Murray Fullname : Eddie Clarence Murray
Born : 2/24/1956 in Los Angeles, CA Debut: Pos Ht: Wt B: T: R Yrs G AB Hits HR RBI SB Avg Eddie Murray was a man of few words when it came to dealing with members of the media. At times, he was labeled as a bad influence in the clubhouse by those members of the press. Those that were his teammate told a different tale Murray was a team leader. Whatever difficulties existed between Murray and the media seems to have dissapated over the years. Murray was elected to the Hall of Fame on his first try becoming only the 38th player to accomplish that feat. Murray never led the league in home runs or RBIS (he tied for the lead in the strike-shortened 1981 season). Yet, he managed to accomplish something only two other players have managed. Murray, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron are the only baseball players to ever collect 3,000 or more hits AND 500 or more home runs. Murray is the only member of that club who was a switch-hitter. In his 22-year career, he hit .287 with 504 HRs and 1,917 RBIs. He played for the Orioles, Indians, Dodgers, Mets and Angels. He appeared in 8 All-Star games and hit 19 grand slams in his career second all-time to Lou Gehrig's 23.

Did anybody, while he was active, ever suggest that he was the best player in baseball? One of the best? Yes. The best? Probably not. Eddie Murray never really got a lot of attention, mostly because he never put together a huge season (or seasons) that would have gotten everyone’s attention. 2. Was he the best player on his team? Much of the time, yes. During Murray’s 12 full seasons in Baltimore, he shared some of the spotlight (and team "best player" honors) with Ken Singleton and later Cal Ripken Jr. Because of Ripken’s greatness, this question is a little bit unfair in Murray’s case, but let’s look anyway. According to Win Shares, Murray was either the best player or tied for the best player on the Orioles 5 times in the 12 year period:
1978 (28 Win Shares - tied with Ken Singleton)
1987 (20 - tied with Cal Ripken Jr) In addition to those 5 times, Murray was the second best Oriole 5 other times:

Did anybody, while he was active, ever suggest that he was the best player in baseball? Yes. Dawson was voted the Most Valuable Player of the National League in 1987. It is debatable whether or not he was considered by most to have been a better player than the AL MVP that year, George Bell, but a significant amount of people definitely thought that way. 2) Was he the best player on his team? Most of the time, no. During Dawson’s 10 full seasons with Montreal he was rarely the best player on the team, as that honor usually went to Gary Carter or Tim Raines. Here are his Win Shares and team ranking for each of his 10 seasons in Montreal, along with the player that led the team: 1977: 18 Win Shares, 3rd on Expos (Gary Carter, 25)
    1978: 21, 3rd (Carter and Ellis Valentine, 22)
