San Francisco
Giants SNAPSHOT The New York "Gothams" joined the National League in 1883 and finished the season with a 46-50 record. The Giants won NL Pennants in 1888 and 1889 but did not win again until the 20th Century. In 1902, John McGraw began his 30-year stint as team manager and the Giants became an immediate power in the National League. Under his leadership, the Giants won 10 NL Pennants and two World Series. The team won only one more World Series prior to 1958 when the team moved from New York to San Francisco. Since the move, the Giants have failed to win the series despite winning pennants in 1962 and 1989. The Giants failed to make the playoffs in 2001, but outfielder Barry Bonds set a new baseball record by hitting 73 home runs. The Giants fortunes changed in 2002 when they defeated Atlanta and St. Louis in the playoffs to capture the National League Championship. CHAMPIONSHIPS 1905 - d. Philadelphia in 5 games

Willie Mays
Fullname: Willie Howard Mays
Nickname: Say Hey
Born: 5/6/1931 in Westfield, AL (USA) Debut: Primary Position: OF Ht: Wt: B: T: R Years Games AB Hits HR RBI SB AVE Willie Mays was only 16 years old when he entered the world of professional baseball in 1947 with the Negro League's Birmingham Black Barons. That season, Jackie Robinson would break baseball's color barrier and open the door for Mays and every other player who had been denied a shot at Major League Baseball because of skin color. Within 4 years, he would be on his way to establishing himself as one of the greatest players in the games. Mays has been described by writers as a player who approached every game like he was trying to make the team. It was 1950 when the New York Giants sent scout Eddie Montague to spring training in Birmingham to take a look at the Baron's first baseman Alonzo Perry. It wasn't Perry that caught his eye it was Willie Mays. Montague dispatched his scouting report to New York and it included the description, "The greatest ball player I had ever seen in my life." The Giants immediately starting to try to find a way to get Mays into their fold.

Baseball, Mobile Born in 1938, Willie Lee McCovey played first base and outfield in the major leagues from 1959-80. Signed by the San Francisco Giants in 1955, McCovey was sent to the Georgia State League and then the Pacific Coast League, and joined the Giants by mid-season. McCovey was an instant hit with fans, and finished the year with a .354 batting average and 13 home runs in only 52 games. He won the National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1959. McCovey continued in the outfield until Orlando Cepeda was forced to give up the first base spot due to injury. From 1965 to 1974, "Stretch" played first base for the Giants. McCovey won the National League MVP award in 1969, a season in which he hit 45 homers, drove in 126 runs and posted a .656 slugging percentage. He won the National League batting title in 1967, 1968 and 1969 and lead the league in home runs in 1963 (44), 1968 (36) and 1969 (45) and RBIs in 1968 and 1969. McCovey appeared in six All-Star games, and was the All-Star Game MVP in 1969. McCovey was traded to the San Diego Padres in 1974, had two good seasons with them, and was then traded to the Oakland Athletics. He was released at the end of the 1976 season and returned to the Giants. His 1977 season included 28 home runs, 86 RBIs, and the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award. McCovey retired during the 1980 season. His career accomplishments include: a 10th-place tie with Ted Williams on the all-time home run list (521); the top home run hitting record among NL first basemen (439); a second place ranking (behind Lou Gehrig) in career grand slams (18); and a major league record for most seasons (22) as a first baseman. In 1986, he was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
