HOWARD ‘WILLIE’ MAYS Born May 6, 1931, Westfield, Ala., both Mays' father and grandfather had been baseball players. Willie, who batted and fielded right-handed, played semiprofessional baseball when he was 16 years old and joined the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League in 1948, playing only on Sunday during the school year. The National League New York Giants paid the Barons for his contract when he graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School in 1950. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Mays went to the Giants in 1951. He became known first for his spectacular leaping and diving catches before he established himself as a hitter. He served in the army (1952-54), and in the 1954 season, when the Giants won the National League pennant and the World Series, Mays led the league in hitting (.345) and had 41 home runs. In 1966 his two-year contract with the Giants (moved to San Francisco in 1958) gave him the highest salary of any baseball player of that time. He was traded to the New York Mets midseason in 1972 and retired after the 1973 season. Late in his career he played in the infield, mainly at first base. His career home run total was 660 and his batting average .302. He led the league in home runs in 1955, 1962, and 1964-65.

WILLIE MAYS
By Michael Griffin
BUY WILLIE MAYS COLLECTIBLES! Willie Mays was the "Say-Hey Kid" long before Ken Griffey, Jr. had the nickname "The Kid" bestowed on him. Mays was called this because he was so young when he first came into the major leagues, and he also had a high squeaky voice.
Mays was born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama and hadn't even turned 20 yet when he joined the New York Giants in 1951. He had a decent rookie season, hitting .270 with 20 home runs. He didn't play much in 1952 and missed all of the 1953 season due to his fulfilling his military duties.
Many people remember Mays simply for "The Catch." For any baseball fans that might not have turned on a television for almost half a century, I'll describe it.
It was 1954, and Mays' Giants were playing in the World Series against the Cleveland Indians, who had made the American League their own personal playground, winning 111 games. Mays had had a breakout season, hitting .345 with 41 home runs and

All-Time Allstars - Willie Mays By Andy Baker
There are certain names that everyone thinks when sorting through the all time baseball players. There's sluggers, pitchers, catchers and fielders but Willie Mays was the most amazing all round player in baseball history.
Willie "Say Hey" Mays played at the same time as other All-Time All-Stars such as Sandy Koufax and Jackie Robinson, whilst still made more records and won more awards than many others from his era. Willie's career statistics include 3,283 hits with 660 homers and a batting average of .302. In 1951 he was awarded Rookie of the Year, was two-time MVP (1954 and 1965) and totalled up a staggering 12 Gold Glove awards. Whilst having played in four world series and participated in 24 All-Star games (a record he shares with Stan Musial and Hank Aaron), Willie Mays still doesn't like being around the media. Born in 1931, Willie grew up playing stickball on the streets of his home town of Westfield (Alabama). After a short time of playing semi-pro ball, at the age of 16 he progressed into the Negro Leagues with his father, playing for the Birmingham Black Barons. The day Willie graduated from High school he was signed to the New York Giants Class B team where he advanced to Triple A. Then at 20 years old, Mays joined the Majors for the Giants at the Polo Ground, New York City.

Willie Mays, the Giants' "Say Hey Kid," played the game with enthusiasm and exuberance. Considered by many the greatest player of all time, Mays was the prototype of the complete player; he played with intelligence - he hit for average and power, fielding, throwing and base running. His unique 1957 performance of 20 or more doubles, triples, homers, and stolen bases established his claim as one of the game's greatest all-around offensive threats. He was also remarkably durable, playing in at least 150 games for 13 consecutive seasons. He played a spectacular centerfield, and possessed a great arm. Mays' preeminence as a centerfielder is supported statistically by his career total of 7,095 putouts, the most in major league history. He used his patented basket catch on routine fly balls, and he regularly dumbfounded onlookers by making seemingly impossible plays. After a particularly astonishing display in which Mays raced to his left, speared a fly ball, spun 360 degrees counterclockwise, and threw the ball on a 325-foot line to nail a tagging Dodger baserunner at the plate, Brooklyn manager Charlie Dressen commented, "I won't believe that play until I see him do it again."

Announcing a new All-Star video from Rare Sportsfilms - highlights of three different years of All-Star Game action (1962, 1965, 1966), a total of 42 minutes of nostalgic baseball, all on one high-quality video!
Only brief action from the second game at Wrigley Field is shown. You'll see Pete Runnels surprise everyone by lofting a homer in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. The winning runs for the A.L. are later provided by Leon Wagner's two-run homer off N.L. loser Art Mahaffey.
The 1966 game at brand new Busch Stadium in St. Louis will always be remembered for the blistering 105-degree heat as well as a sparkling 2-1 N.L. 10-inning win. It is only the 4th mid-summer classic to go extra innings and for the third time, a Cardinal player is involved in an overtime victory. Great color closeup shots include Mays, Willie McCovey, Rocky Colavito, Al Kaline, McAuliffe, Richardson, Bobby Knoop, Aaron, the Robinson boys, Leo Cardenas, Clemente, Carl Yastrzemski, Oliva, Earl Battey, starting pitchers Sandy Koufax and Denny McLain, managers Sam Mele and Walt Alston and honorary coaches Ted Williams and Casey Stengel.
In the second inning Brooks Robinson's liner gets away from Aaron and Robbie pounds around to third with a triple, for what is to be the only hit off Koufax. However, Sandy's wild pitch scores Robinson, and the A.L. leads 1-0. Brooks also has a fine day in the field, making three nice plays at third base, including two to rob the Cubs' Ron Santo and another to save a 6th-inning run on Aaron's smash. The N.L. ties the game in the 4th, off Jim Kaat when Mays and Clemente single. After two outs, Mays scores from third on Santo's little infield dribbler. With the game tied 1-1 in the 10th, Cardinal catcher Tim McCarver leads off with a hit, goes to second on a sac bunt by Ron Hunt and then scores the winning run when Maury Wills singles to right center!
