Memories of Willie
I saw Mays' 563rd career homerun at Shea Stadium and afterwards a guy behind me in the stands spilled beer all over my Giant's Pennant which I still have today. -Greg Jezewski My brother Guy and I were raised in San Leandro, East Bay. He taught me everything about baseball and we never missed a Giant's game on the radio. For my 16th birthday he took me to a double header and for my 35th birthday he gave me an autographed 1963 Willie Mays Baseball Card. What a life time bond we share. Willie. -Gail Henry Willie Mays was one of my favorite players as a kid during the sixties. I didn't get to see him play very much (never in person, and rarely on televison). I lived near Pittsburgh and was, of course, a Pirate fan. Many an argument around my neighborhood about who the best outfielder was: Willie or Roberto Clemente. As a child, I only got to two ballgames (in Forbes Field). One of those times I was thrilled because the Bucs were hosting the Giants. Aniticpating seeing Mays on the field, I was disappointed to learn that he was not to be in the lineup that day. This was 1966, I think, and still rare that he was sitting out with an injury.

For years, Joe DiMaggio held the title of baseball's greatest living player. As of 8 March that was no longer possible, so the Denver Post surveyed explayers, managers, and sportswriters to anoint a successor. Their choice willie mays. While a quick look at the stats is impressive (the Giants outfielder was the ultimate five-tool player He could hit, hit for power, run, field, and throw), many believe what separated mays from the others was his sheer baseball intelligence. In topping the survey, the Say Hey Kid beat out some pretty fair competition Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, and Sandy Koufax, in that order. Wired News

Mays brought joy to baseball
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
The 20-year-old kid with the bright, boyish smile entered the majors tentatively, like a child peeking into a forbidden room. But he soon realized that he did indeed belong, that he wasn't an interloper. Not only did he play the game with extreme skill, but for most of his 22-year career, he made the game seem like, well, fun. The Say Hey Kid mastered the five fundamentals of baseball. There always was something fresh and pleasurable in his performance. Making a glove-thumping basket catch or a whirling throw in centerfield, losing his hat running the bases or swinging from his heels at the plate, Willie Mays played with an irresistible, unrelenting exuberance. "I can never understand how some players are always talking about baseball being hard work," Mays said during his first decade in the game. "To me, it's always been a pleasure, even when I feel sort of draggy after a doubleheader." It's like Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella said, "You gotta be a man to play baseball for a living, but you gotta have a lot of little boy in you, too."

Willie Mays and the Month of May

by Harvey Frommer
The month of May was always Willie Mays ' time. Willie Howard Mays was born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama. The New York Giants called him up on May 15, 1951 from Minneapolis in the American Association . He was bating .477 after 35 games. Garry Schumacher , publicist for the Giants at that time, recalled the first time he ever saw Mays. "The Giants were on their way from Chicago to Philadelphia to conclude the last three games of a road trip," Schumacher said. "I was by the front door of the Giants' office on Times Square. Suddenly, this kid comes in. There were always a lot of kids coming around; some of them wanted tickets and some wanted tryouts. He was carrying a few bats in one hand and a bag in the other that contained his glove and spikes. He was wearing the most unusual cap I ever saw, plaid colored. When I found out who he was, we bought him some clothes and then sent him to Philadelphia to join the club. He was wearing the new clothes when he left, but funny thing - he refused to take off that funny cap." He made his major league debut with the Giants on May 25, 1951
