CHRISTY MATHEWSON
New York City has a rich baseball history. In the 20th Century, four teams have been based in the nation's largest city. Thousands of ballplayers have worn the uniforms of either the New York Giants, the New York Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers, or the New York Mets. Of these thousands of players, a select few, a relative handful, have reached the pinnacle of fame and won the hearts of this most demanding city. But fame can be fleeting. Players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are still revered many years after their deaths, in no small measure due to the fact that the team they played for still exists and is still thriving. Christy Mathewson, on the other hand, has not fared nearly as well. Before Ruth joined the Yankees in 1921 and forever changed the game of baseball, the Giants were easily New York's dominant team, and Christy Mathewson was their shining star. Mathewson shared the spotlight with his manager, John McGraw. McGraw and Mathewson, however, could be called polar opposites. The public saw Mathewson as the prototypical gentleman athlete, a college man who lived an exemplary life both on and off the field. He was what we would today call "a good role model." McGraw, though, was coarse, ill tempered, and driven. He had unprecedented success as a manager, and New Yorkers came to appreciate the genius he displayed from the dugout. Between them, Mathewson and McGraw personified the New York Giants. They were world famous, and they lived in an era before radio and television, when worldwide fame was much more difficult to achieve.

HOW "MATTY" BECAME A PITCHER
From The Literary Digest , May 11, 1912 "We want to see what you've got," said he. Most of the baseball population of the town gathered to see me get my try-out, and I pitched for two hours, while the critics stood around and watched me closely, to discover what I could do. They sent their best batters up to face the curves I was throwing, and I was "putting everything I had on the ball." After a full hour's dress rehearsal, and when, at last, I "fanned" out the captain of the team, he came up, slapped me on the back, and said: "You'll do. We want you to pitch this afternoon." That, I am sure, was the very proudest day of my life. We had to drive ten miles to the opponents' town, and all the other boys watched me leave with the men. And you can imagine my pride while I watched them , as they stood on one foot and then the other, nudging one another and saying, "'Husk' is going to play with the men!" They called me "Husk" in those days. It was a big jump upward for me, and I would hardly look at the other youngsters as I climbed into the carriage with the captain. If the full truth were told, however, I felt almost "all in" after the hard session I had been through in the morning.

    The Curse of Christy Mathewson
The first great pitcher in history was a Giant. Since his departure, such aces have been scarce. By Jmar Gambol. The Giants are cursed. No, I'm not talking about their forty-seven-year championship drought. The Cubs, the Indians, the Red Sox, let them go first, they've suffered longer and deeper (those poor Red Sox!). The championship drought in San Francisco has been dubbed "The Curse of Sal Maglie" by a local sportswriter and it's not my concern here. The curse I'm talking about is something subtler than not winning any World Series since 1954, although it certainly is a factor in that failure. It's the longstanding absence from the team of legendary pitchers. I call it the curse of Christy Mathewson. Not that Matty ever wished ill upon the team he brought to glory. Mathewson was, if anything, a gentleman, but first he was one of the greatest pitchers of all time, the first true national baseball superstar, with the classic beauty of a Greek god and the skill to match, one of the so-called first five immortals of the Hall of Fame. Acclaimed author Roger Kahn, in his book

How many of today's young sport fans remember who Christy Mathewson was? Probably not many. And it's a shame. Mathewson was not only a baseball hero, who pitched for the New York Giants early in the century, but he was a man who made an impression on Americans way beyond the outfield walls.
Director Kerrigan Mahan didn't know who Mathewson was when he became involved in Eddie Frierson's one-man play, "MattyAn Evening With Christy Mathewson," opening on Saturday at Studio City's Two Roads Theatre.
Baseball isn't his sport. But theater is, and he has since become fascinated with Mathewson, the man. "He was such a huge star that he was considered one of the finest pitchers in baseball history," Mahan says. "There's so much theater here."
Baseball is Frierson's sport. He pitched baseball for the UCLA Bruins while he was working on a theater arts degree, and later coached baseball for Santa Monica High School, four of those years as varsity head coach. At the same time, he was establishing himself as an actor on television and stage, and working as a voice-over actor, where he originally met Mahan.

He is the keeper of the Christy Mathewson legend.
For theater-goers, baseball fans or high school studentsanyone who's interested, reallyFrierson will pull on a New York Giants uniform, adjust his cap and become Mathewson. He'll recall the antics of manager John McGraw, several National League umpires and most of the Giants squad as part of his play, "Matty: An Evening With Christy Mathewson."
Sure, sure, it's a one-man show. A "showcase." But according to Frierson, its intent has changed over the years of development. "The show started for completely selfish purposes. This was going to be my Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain," Frierson said. "Now, I could care less if they put my name on the program." It's more important, he says, to keep Mathewson alive as an American hero. When Mathewson was playing baseball from 1900 to 1916, the sport was to Americans what soccer is to Europeansa rowdy event that catered to a rowdy crowd. But unlike some of his fellow players, known alcoholics or womanizers, Mathewson held himself to high personal standards. He espoused the virtues of honesty and self-confidence.

Profile: Christy Mathewson, "The Big Six"
I n 1900, a young man named Christy Mathewson left Bucknell College in Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the glee club, and headed south for a chance to play professional baseball. After winning 21 games with Norfolk in the minor leagues, he joined the New York Giants. Mathewson promptly lost three games and was sent back down to the minors. The Reds drafted him at the end the season but then traded him to the Giants for Amos Rusie. This trade has been characterized as "probably the worst in the history of baseball". Rusie would not win another game. Mathewson would pitch a no-hitter in his first year and became one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball. The rise of Christy Mathewson to greatness during those infant years of major league baseball was a major reason the Giants rose out of the doldrums and became one of the most successful teams in baseball. Prior to Mathewson's rookie year of 1901, the Giants had struggled for respectability in the nation's largest city. From their first year of existence in 1883 to 1902, they were mostly a second division team. With the arrival of Mathewson and the fiery manager John McGraw in 1902 who brought in quality players, came the turnaround they fans so feverishly desired. In 1901, Mathewson got off to a great start in his rookie year, winning 20 games and pitching a no-hitter. When the next season started, the Giants manager at the time, for some strange reason, tried to convert Mathewson from pitcher to first baseman. Thank goodness John McGraw came along and he had the good sense to leave Mathewson alone. McGraw brought in the talent he needed and along with Mathewson's 35 wins, the Giants had their first pennant.

Christy Mathewson was a college man, sang in the glee club, belonged to a literary society, served as a model of clean living, and mowed down opposing hitters in his spare time. In a time where baseball was known for hard-living, hard-drinking baseball players, there was Christy Mathewson. He was the role model after whom every parent wanted their children to model their lives.
On the mound, he was a completely different story. He was a fierce competitor that became arguably the most dominating pitcher ever. During his illustrious 17-year career, he led the league in wins four times, won five strikeout titles, won 30 or more games four times, pitched four shutouts and ten complete games in World Series competition, and won 373 games in his career.
In 1936, he joined Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson as the first class of baseball Hall of Famers.
