Giants pitcher was tops in the game for nearly 14 years When Christy Mathewson retired from his playing career, he was one of baseball's immortals in the area of pitching. One of the original five entrants into the Hall of Fame, Mathewson finished with 372 wins and a 2.13 earned run average. Despite Christy Mathewson's stellar performance in 1908 (31-7, 1.43 ERA), the Giants still finished a game behind the Cubs. Mathewson was the original boy scout, a clean-cut player with blond hair and blue eyes. Born into a farming family, Mathewson attended Bucknell University, where he was class president. He also played on the football team as a placekicker and was a star pitcher on the baseball team. In 1889, he joined Taunton (New England League) as a pitcher. He went to Norfolk (Virginia League) the following year and finished with a 20-2 record. The record caught the attention of the New York Giants. They purchased Mathewson's contract for $1,500. Mathewson, however, drew the ire of the Giants when he lose his first three games and posted a 5.08 earned run average. The Giants sent him back to Norfolk, declared the deal dead and demanded their money back.

Christy Mathewson's Orders to Report for WWI Christy Mathewson was born 1880, Factoryville, PA and died in 1925, Saranac Lake, NY. He pitched from 1900 to 1916, and is tied with Grover Cleveland Alexander as the winningest pitcher in the National League history with 373 victories (third all-time). He had a .665 winning percentage (seventh all-time) and a 2.13 ERA (fifth all-time). In World Series play, he started 11 games (second all-time) and completed 10 (first all-time). In the 1905 World Series, he shut out Philadelphia A's three times in the course of five afternoons. While working in a chemical lab in France during World War l, Christy was expose to poisonous gas that severely damaged his lungs. In 1925, at the age of 45, he contracted tuberculosis, a direct result of his exposure to chemicals. These are Mathewson's orders to report for the great war that ultimately took his life, seven years after war's end. Text on the order above reads as follows: "CONFIDENTIAL.

"Frierson is totally convincing — not only giving, say, a beautifully technical account of the 'fade-away,' but in behaving seemingly with all the authority and knowledge of Mathewson’s acquired personal history. It’s pure virtuosity. A perfect pitch!" Clive Barnes, NEW YORK POST To read this entire review click: "Remarkable! This show is as memorable as an exciting World Series game and it wakes up the echoes about why we love baseball. When MATTY comes to your town don't miss it! A great way to get hooked on baseball again!"

"A great new play! If you could act your way into Cooperstown, Frierson would be there!"

On the day that the New York Giants played the Chicago White Sox in an exhibition game in Oxnard, California on November 11, 1913, the schools were closed, thousands showed up and two newspapers covered the event. The Giants won 3-2. The City of Oxnard is celebrating its 100th Anniversary and to commemorate that event they are re-creating the game that was played there during the famous 1913 World Tour featuring Charles Comisky's Chicago White Sox and John McGraw's New York Giants. This event will feature local historians lecturing on the event (with multimedia presentations)

AN EVENING WITH CHRISTY MATHEWSON
By Robert Palazzo On July 26th, about two weeks ago, my friend Scott and I visited Cooperstown to witness what I consider one of the best individual stage performances I have seen in a long time. What we saw that evening can only be described as captivating; perhaps the most captivating live performance I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Eddie Frierson, about 40 years old, immerses himself into the character and persona of one of baseball's greats, Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants. Mathewson was inducted posthumously into the inaugural class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Frierson began his research on the life and career of Mathewson in 1984 and has taken that research and created a stunning portrayal of the man. Using the character of Mathewson, dressed in the clothing of the era, Frierson stimulates our sense of life's ironies, as this performance is about more than baseball, more than the life of Christy Mathewson, but instead about Life, with a capital 'L'; its odd twists and turns, how people's actions affect other people, intentionally, as well as, unintentionally. It's Matty as philosopher, reflecting on life as described in a musical lyric of a contemporary and colleague of his, George M. Cohan: "Life's a funny proposition." The first act (containing six scenes) opens with Frierson on stage already in the Matty character, wearing a NY Giants jersey, trousers and cap, under a wool sweater and scarf; surrounded by an assortment of props - a reading chair; a small table next to the chair, with a pipe rack, glove and baseball on it; a desk and chair; several pieces of luggage that have old advertising pieces propped against them (Mathewson was quite the product endorser in his day); a small green stool; a picture of George M. Cohan; and sheet music scattered all over the floor. Matty tells us how he was raised in a pleasant but strict home. He was taught never to smoke and to always honor the Sabbath; he was true to his mother in one of those cherished rules, as he never participated in a game played on Sunday, at any level of ball. As for smoking, well, that was another story.
