Eddie Mathews
Eddie Mathews teamed with Hank Aaron to form a lethal one-two punch in the 1950s and 1960s. Mathews, who hit 512 career homers, was the best-hitting third baseman in history before Mike Schmidt. Edwin Lee Mathews (born 1931) was pursued by the Brooklyn Dodgers, who offered a $10,000 contract. He was also courted by the Boston Braves, who offered $6,000. Eddie decided that Boston would give him the best opportunity. Mathews batted .363 with 17 homers in 1949, his first pro season, and slugged 32 homers the next year in the Southern League. Mathews was promoted to Boston in 1952, and though he led the NL in strikeouts, he cracked 25 homers. The next year, the Braves left for Milwaukee and Mathews 47 round trippers led the NL. He notched 37 or more taters and 95 or more RBI from 1954 to '56. In 1957, he batted .292 with 32 homers and 94 RBI as the Braves won a World Championship. He hit just .251 with 31 four baggers as the Braves won another pennant in 1958, but Eddie won the homer crown in 1959 with 46. Mathews hit at least 30 homers in nine seasons, a National League record, and four times hit over 40. he led the league in walks four times and scored at least 95 runs in ten straight seasons. While Henry Aaron and Mathews played together, they hit 863 homeruns, more than Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Mathews was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. Mathews, initially a poor defensive player, eventually became a capable third baseman. He led the NL in putouts twice and assists three times. He is sixth among third baseman in career double plays. In 1962, Mathews injured his shoulder, and his ability gradually declined. After one year in Atlanta in 1966, he was traded to Houston and later to Detroit before retiring in 1968.

SAN DIEGO – Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews, who teamed with Hank Aaron to give the Braves a historic home run punch and Milwaukee its only World Series championship, died Sunday. He was 69.
Eddie Mathews spent 15 of his 17 years in the majors with the Braves while they played in Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta.
Mathews died in his sleep at Scripps La Jolla hospital, his wife, Judy, said. He had been hospitalized since Sept. 3, when she took him to the emergency room after he had trouble breathing.
"He worked so hard to get better," Judy Mathews said. "He just gave out."
Mathews died of complications of pneumonia, said his son, Eddie Jr., an anesthesiologist at Waukesha (Wis.) Memorial Hospital. Mathews also had congestive heart failure, although that didn't play a significant role his death, his son said.
Mathews hit 512 home runs and was the only person to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta. The third baseman who played in 10 All-Star games also appeared on the first cover of Sports Illustrated back in 1954.
The slugger often batted ahead of Aaron, the cleanup hitter in the Braves' lineup, and they combined to hit 863 homers from 1954-66, the highest total for teammates in major league history. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig teamed for 859 with the New York Yankees.

MILWAUKEE BRAVES
The 1961 Milwaukee Braves nostalgic video is another in a continuing series of Braves vintage promotional films now being restored and offered by "Rare Sportsfilms"! "Big Moments With The Braves" highlights the Braves' 1961 season, both at home and on the road as they battle other teams in the National League. Shown on this video are nice scenes of every ballpark in the league except Crosley Field and Busch Stadium. Particularly outstanding are shots of the Coliseum in Los Angeles, Forbes Field, Connie Mack Stadium, and Wrigley Field.
Throughout the tape you'll see the '61 Braves in action: Pitchers Warren Spahn, 18-game winner Lew Burdette, Carl Willey and rookies Don Nottebart, Tony Cloninger and Bob Hendley. Hank Aaron's .327 average and 120 RBI are tops on the Braves, Joe Adcock leads the team with 35 HR, and Eddie Mathews hits 30 or more HR for the 9th straight year, setting a new N.L. record. New Braves for 1961 are off-season acquisitions Roy McMillan and Frank Bolling who provide needed defensive help. Ex-Cub Frank Thomas arrived to help the Braves set a new major league record in 1961. Against Cincinnati, Mathews, Aaron, Adcock and Thomas hit 4 home runs in a row! You'll also see young rookie Mack Jones and future star Joe Torre, who took over for catcher Del Crandall, sidelined much of the year with a sore throwing arm.
The St. Louis Cardinals are guests of the Braves on Opening Day at County Stadium with two 21-game winners from the previous season, Spahn and Ernie Broglio opposing each other. Some of the outstanding pre-game shots include nice closeups of Stan Musial and Red Schoendienst, and the two great N.L. 3rd basemen, Eddie Mathews and Ken Boyer. It's Mathews who scores the first run of the season with a homer into the rightfield bleachers in the fourth inning, but the Braves lose 2-1 in extra innings when infielder Daryl Spencer hits a home run for the Cardinals. The inability to hold a lead in the late innings would haunt the Braves throughout the season and by early September Manager Chuck Dressen is replaced by Birdie Tebbetts.

Relentless practice and refusal to quit helped him become an all-around champion
From: Investor Business Daily
Nov 14, 2001
By Kerry Jackson When he appeared as the first person on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1954, slugger Eddie Mathews was shown taking what baseball legend Ty Cobb called one of the three or four perfect swings he'd seen. It was a skill Mathews acquired early in life through endless hours of practice. "My mother used to pitch to me, and my father would shag balls," he said when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978. "If I hit one up the middle, close to my mother, I'd have some extra chores to do." Being forced to avoid hitting his mother helped the left-handed swinging Mathews develop into a pull hitter who routinely drove the ball to right field. Mathews (1931-2001), the seventh major league to hit 500 home runs, recorded 512 for his career. Until Mike Schmidt broke the record, Mathews held the major league mark for the most home runs by a third baseman. He also drove in 1,453 runs and hit .271 for his career. He played in three World Series, his team winning the first (1957, with the Milwaukee Braves) and the last (1968, with the Detroit Tigers). In addition, Mathews was the only player in the Braves' franchise history to play in all three of their cities: Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta.
