EDDIE MATHEWS
The Young Eddie Mathews Born in Texarkana, Texas, on October 13, 1931, just a few weeks after the Cardinals had defeated the A’s in the World Series. A week later Mickey Mantle was born, and just a few weeks before, Ernie Banks and Willie Mays had entered the world. Mathews family was not poor, his father worked for Western Union, and Eddie had ample time to hone his athletic skills. When he was 6 years old the family moved to Santa Barbara, California. As Eddie grew, his father threw him pitch after pitch and taught him his sweet swing. When Mathews reached his teenage years he starred in both baseball and football. He was a tough fullback on the gridiron. But baseball was his passion, and it flowed through his veins as well – his grandfather “Bird” had been a fine hitter in the Texas League. As his senior year progressed, scouts from nearly every major league team went to see him play. Eddie and his father decided to choose his team very carefully. After studying the major league rosters they decided Eddie would sign with the Boston

The baseball career of Eddie Mathews
If Hank Aaron were in his prime today, the salary demands of the sport would prevent him from ever playing on the same team with another slugger. Fortunately for Aaron, he played in the days when teams could afford more than one superstar. And fortunately for Aaron, he was able to play with Eddie Mathews. Unlike many players today, Eddie Mathews took less money to play in a city that offered him the best opportunity. While the Brooklyn Dodgers offered him a $10,000 contract, Mathews chose to play for the Boston Braves for $6,000. In his first minor league season in 1949, Mathews batted .363 with 17 homers. He upped that home run total to 32 one year later, and eventually (in 1952) was promoted to the big league club. bodyOffer(18597) Mathews struggled a bit his first season, leading the National League in strikeouts, though he continued to show power with 25 homeruns. In 1953, the year the Braves moved to Milwaukee, Mathews led the league with 47 homers. Over the next six seasons, he continued to scorch the ball, and won a World Series along the way. From 1954 - 1957, Mathews had at least 37 homers and 95 RBI each season. In the world championship season of 1957, he hit 32 dingers and 94 RBI to go along with a .292 average. The next two seasons he totaled 77 homeruns

Eddie Mathews

Mathews vaulted into stardom in second year in NL ALSO Hall of Famer Mathews dies on Feb. 18, 2001 A trivia question goes something like this... Name the only player to have played for the Braves when they were in Boston, Milwaukee and then Atlanta? Eddie Mathews began his Hall of Fame career with the Boston Braves in 1952. He moved with the team to Milwaukee in 1953 and then played a year for the Braves in Atlanta in 1966. Eddie Mathews was an All-Star in 1953, 1955-62. He led the National League in home runs in 1953 and 1959. He is tied with Ernie Banks with 512 home runs for 13th on the all-time list. In that time, Mathews developed a reputation for his power and defense. When his career ended in 1968, Mathews had 512 home runs, tying him for 13th all-time. He hit 468 home runs playing exclusively at third base. That total was only surpassed by Mike Schmidt. According to reports, Mathews signed with the Boston Braves in 1949 on the night of his high school graduation. Mathews and his father had searched through major league rosters and had decided that the Braves' Bob Elliott was the third baseman most likely to be replaced in the next few years.

was one of the game's most feared lefthand sluggers. One of the few men in the history of baseball to hit over 500 home runs, Mathews finished his career with 512. Eddie hit 30 or more homers for 9 consecutive seasons from 1953-1962. Only a shoulder injury broke the streak. Together with Hank Aaron, Mathews formed the greatest homer-hitting duo in major league history. Eddie Mathews, 1931-2001 Ranked with such baseball legends as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and his own team mate, Hank Aaron, Braves home run master Eddie Mathews graced the first cover of Sports Illustrated before induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Former third baseman and All Star Eddie Mathews died after a long illness on February 18th, 2001 in San Diego, California at the age of 69. Born on October 13th, 1931 in Texarkana, Texas, Edwin Lee Mathews career in baseball began early and received support from both of his parents. Transplanted to Santa Barbara, California during the Depression, Mathews was taught to play ball by his father, a minor league player and his mother, who proved to be an able pitcher. The Mathews's reputedly realized that they had a future star on their hands when as a 6-year-old he nearly knocked his mother off the mound with a line drive. By 1949, Mathews, who had been widely recruited, earned his high school diploma and first professional baseball contract on the same day. Mathews signed with the Braves and played on the team's minor league fields until making his debut in the big leagues in Boston for the 1952 season, their last in that city. Mathews helped the Braves bid Boston a proud farewell with 25 home runs and stellar performances on third base. The following season, when the Braves debuted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mathews nabbed his first home run hitting title. In 1954, Mathews and his "perfect swing" graced the cover of the first-ever issue of Sports Illustrated, and the Braves welcomed Henry Aaron. Together, Mathews and Aaron made sports history.
