Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Gallery Home Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Roger Maris Roger Maris was Baseball's Single-Season Home Run King from 1961-1998. He hit home runs during the 1961 season while he was a member of the New York Yankees. Maris also played for the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals.
Raised in Fargo, North Dakota, Maris was a football and basketball star at Shanley High School. He played in the American League after trying out with the Chicago Cubs. Maris began playing for the Cleveland Indians in 1959, and hit 14 home runs. In 1958 and 1959, he hit 28 and 16 homers respectively, while playing for Kansas City. Maris was traded to the Yankees in 1960, and his legend began. He was voted Most Valuable Player in the American League that year, after hitting 39 home runs with 112 RBIs. The year 1961 saw Maris blast 61 home runs, one more than Babe Ruth hit in a season, and again Maris was named MVP.
Maris held the major league home run record until 1998, when Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals broke it. Recipients Next

So why isn't roger maris in the baseball Hall of Fame? Here are some statisticsthat should prove without a doubt that he deserves to be elected.

Roger Maris
Roger Eugene Maris was born September 10, 1934 in Hibbing, Minnesota. He was raised in North Dakota and graduated from Shanley High School in Fargo. An outstanding athlete, he set a national record in football, returning 4 kickoffs for touchdowns in one game. He was offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Oklahoma, but turned it down to sign a baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians. Roger spent 4 years playing in the minor leagues before being called up. He was then traded to the Kansas City Athletics and after about 2 years there, was traded to the New York Yankees. He finished his career with the St. Louis Cardinals.
On October 1, 1961, Roger Maris hit his 61st home run, breaking Babe Ruth's record. This record stood for 37 years, longer than the Babe had held it. So why isn't Roger Maris in the Baseball Hall of Fame? Here are some statistics that should prove without a doubt that he deserves to be elected. He is a 2 time consecutive American Leage Most Valuable player winner. Winning the award in 1960 and 1961. Only 11 players have won consecutive MVP awards and all of the others who are eligible are in the Hall. His New York Yankee teams won 5 pennants and 2 world series in the 7 years he played for them. The St. Louis Cardinals won 2 pennants and 1 world series in the 2 seasons he played there.

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

Maris, Roger Eugene 1934-85, American baseball player, b. Hibbing, Minn. He played (1957-59) for the Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Athletics before joining (1960) the New York Yankees. In 1961, Maris hit 61 home runs, thus establishing a new record for the most home runs hit in a single major-league season. However, Ford C. Frick, commissioner of baseball, ruled that since Maris played in a 162-game schedule and Ruth in only a 154-game schedule, Ruth's record would stand. Maris won the league's most valuable player award in 1960 and again in 1961. He hit 275 home runs in his 12-year major league career (1957-68).

    Abstract
The race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa to break the major league season home run record captured the attention of sports fans (and even non-sports fans) during the summer of 1998. In this article the game-by-game home run performance of each of these players is provided, along with some team statistics for each game. This dataset provides a rich set of possibilities of analyses in both introductory and advanced statistics courses, including graphical exploratory displays, categorical data analysis, analysis of variance, logistic regression, and smoothing methods for Poisson and binomial data.
    1. Introduction
1 The sports world in general, and baseball world in particular, was electrified by the attempts of Mark McGwire (of the St. Louis Cardinals) and Sammy Sosa (of the Chicago Cubs) to break Roger Maris' 37-year old all-time season home run record during the 1998 season. Indeed, the race ultimately transcended sports entirely, becoming the lead story in newspapers and television news reports. McGwire broke the record with his 62nd home run on September 8, and Sosa followed suit five days later. Ultimately McGwire ended the season with an almost unbelievable 70 home runs, while Sosa finished with 66. 2 The great interest in these record-breaking performances makes it natural to consider examining them more carefully in statistics classes. Not everyone is a baseball enthusiast, however, and it is certainly a good idea for teachers to use datasets of this type judiciously, so that nonfans don't become bored or confused.
