Major League Baseball Roger Maris: Hall of Fame Controversy by Winona Hess A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED to find out that Roger Maris, former longtime holder of the single-season home run record (61), is not in Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame. With all the excitement this season about home run records, the debate about whether or not Maris should be in the Hall of Fame has re-ignited. Maris broke Babe Ruth's record on October 1, 1961 in the last game of that season. The New York Yankees were hosting the Boston Red Sox. In his first at bat Maris flied out to Boston's rookie leftfielder, Carl Yastrzemski. In his second at bat, in the fourth inning, with the count at two balls and no strikes, Maris hit the orb, thrown by Boston pitcher Tracy Stallard, 360 feet over Yankee Stadium's rightfield wall and broke Ruth's record. It was 2:43pm and it was the only run of the game. That great accomplishment, however, according to the rules governing Hall of Fame eligibility, is not sufficient to get Maris elected to the shrine. The rules are written to discourage the election of what are called "short-term wonders." These are the players who have performed an outstanding feat in one season. But instead of being rewarding for this accomplishment, Maris faced a lot of hostility from the baseball public. "They acted as though I was doing something wrong, poisoning thre record books or something," said Maris at the 1980 All-Star Game. " Do you know what I have to show for 61 home runs? Nothing. Exactly nothing." Even though Maris had been the 1960 American League MVP, he was basically an unknown quantity, hitting .269. It didn't matter that he played the game with a ferocious intensity or that he was an excellent baserunner and brilliant right fielder. The people's choice was his teammate Mickey Mantle, who was also chasing the record. That 1961 season was the first year of expansion and the first year of the 162-game season. Ruth had set his record in 1927 in a 154-game season. So for many people, Maris's feat would be spoiled if he needed more than 154 games to break Ruth's record. Commissioner Ford Frick even announced that if Maris took more than 154 games to break the record it would go into the record books as a separate accomplishment from Ruth's.

BILLY CRYSTAL'S MOVIE '61*' ONE OF THE BEST! Director Billy Crystal captured the essence of baseball and also did a fine job of telling the compelling story of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris in the HBO movie "61*" which premiered on Saturday, April 28th. I was enthralled with the experience and was very pleased to see Crystal get the facts straight. From what I could tell, there was little dramatization or skewing the storyline to make it more "Hollywood." I'm willing to bet that Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Bob Cerv and the others didn't just sit down one night in a nightclub and tell Maris how Joe DiMaggio was inadvertently responsible for Mantle tearing up his knee during the 1951 World Series. But, this was an instance where Crystal took advantage of an opportunity to fill in viewers with a little history behind Mantle and his relationship with DiMaggio. It worked, too. There was also a scene where Maris wanted to sit out a game toward the end of his pursuit of 61 homers. Manager Ralph Houk talks him out of it and Maris proceeds to hit another dinger. I doubt this actually happened. As it was, the scene served to put everything in a nutshell about Maris; the man had to overcome many obstacles in 1961 and, at times, the pressure was more than he could deal with. Somehow, Maris overcame it all - which the movie showed very well. Mantle was expertly portrayed by Thomas Jane. Both the actor and the real-life Mantle could have been twins, in my opinion. From Mantle's country drawl to Mantle's penchant for late night carousing, Jane hit it on the nose with his superb acting ability. I think Jane will probably get more stellar roles on the silver screen soon.

After all wouldn't we, the fans, only beating cheating ourselves. We watch and attend games to be entertained, to see the extraordinary - what could be more thrilling than seeing history? That is what Roger Maris must have been thinking in 1961. It has been well documented that Maris wasn't exactly the people's choice to break the record. He was booed and ridiculed. He wasn't good enough - he was no Babe Ruth or even Mickey Mantle for that matter. He was what he was and he wasn't going to apologize for it - here is his story. Roger Eugene Maris was born on September 10, 1934 in Hibbing, MN. He grew up right across the border in Fargo, ND where his family moved when he was eight. Maris starred in basketball and football at Shanley High School and played American Legion baseball (Shanley did not have a baseball team). As a sophomore he met his future wife, Pat, at a high school basketball game. Maris set a national high school record by returning four kickoffs for touchdowns in one game as a senior. The all state halfback gained interested from legendary coach Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma, but Maris career as a Sooner was over before it began. Upon looking at the entrance exam, he decided that college wasn't for him and returned to Fargo.

Since then many men have seriously attacked it, but for every June challenge there has been a September reckoning. Twice men have come close. Jimmy Foxx and Hank Greenberg each hit 58 home runs, Foxx in 1932, Greenberg six years later. No one has done that well since, but last week, as the season moved into its second half, it began to look as if Ruth's record finally might fall. The challenge comes not from one man but two, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, teammates on the New York Yankees. Mantle and Maris, with 37 and 36 home runs apiece, are currently running about 20 games ahead of the pace Ruth set in 1927. Mantle hit his 37th home run in the Yankees' 92nd game. Ruth did not hit his 37th until the Yankees' 114th game. Such comparisons with Ruth's pace have always been deceptive, however, since Ruth hit so many of his home runs late in the season. After 123 games of the 1927 season, Ruth had hit only 40 home runs, but in his last 32 games he hit 20, 17 of them in September. (Ruth's late surge crushed his teammate Lou Gehrig, who was tied with Ruth 44-44 on Labor Day. Gehrig finished with 47.) Any serious challenger must go into September with a cushion.
