Roger Maris

North Dakota native broke Ruth's unbreakable record Imagine the thrill of breaking one of the games's greatest records of all time. Then, imagine what it would be like if the fans didn't want you to break that record. And, that will sum up Roger Maris' career. Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record by hitting 61 in 1961. Maris was also an All-Star in 1959-62. He won the American League MVP in 1960 and 1961. He led the league in runs batted in in 1960 and 1961. In 1961, Roger Maris hit his 61st home run of the season and broke a record that no one thought would ever be duplicated, much less broken. Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs had stood since 1927. Historians describe that 1927 Yankees squad as one of the greatest ever. Ruth's feat of 60 home runs made that season even more memorable. But, the character and personality of the two Yankees played a part in the controversy. Ruth loved the crowd, he loved to live it up on and off the field. Maris was a quiet man who was willing to be a team player to move baserunners into scoring position.

or years, Babe Ruth's 1927 record of 60 home runs withstood the challenge of many a mighty slugger. Hack Wilson, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Johnny Mize, Ralph Kiner, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle each finished seasons within ten or fewer home runs of breaking Ruth's record. None of them could equal the Babe's mark. In 1961, however, things would change. As had occurred back in 1927, two Yankees pushed each other in the home run race. The 1961 version of Ruth and Gehrig was the duo of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, a pairing that had already won three of the last five American League MVP awards. Mantle's home run stroke was hot from the very beginning of the season, as he hit nine home runs in the Yankee's first eighteen games. Maris, on the other hand, was still looking for home run #4 with the season already well over a month old. But Maris soon found his groove and by mid-May both of the Yankee sluggers were in full swing of the home run chase. On August 13th, with Maris homering twice and Mantle once, the Yankee duo sat at 45 home runs a piece, both ready to make a run at Ruth. Maris continued his hot-hitting, but Mantle went cold. Nevertheless, when Maris hit his 56th home run on September 9th, he and Mantle (with 52 home runs) broke the record for most single-season home runs by a pair of teammates. The old record was set back in 1927 by Ruth (60) and Gehrig (47).

roger maris • baseball Player. roger maris hit 61 home runs in 1961 tobreak baseball's singleseason record of 60 set in 1927 by Babe Ruth.
http://www.who2.com/rogermaris.html
ROGER MARIS Baseball Player Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961 to break baseball's single-season record of 60 set in 1927 by Babe Ruth . Maris set the record after a spirited season-long duel with fellow New York Yankee Mickey Mantle , who hit 54 homers the same year. Though Maris was the American League's MVP in both 1960 and 1961, he was not considered a major star and was maligned by some fans who felt he wasn't fit to stand alongside the legendary Ruth. (Similar sentiments cropped up when Hank Aaron beat Ruth's career home run record.) For some time Maris's record was considered unofficial, since it was achieved in 162 games rather than the 154-game season Ruth played; this is often referred to as "the asterisk" by Maris's name. In 1991 baseball commissioner Fay Vincent declared Maris to be the sole and official record holder, thereby ending the controversy. Maris's record was broken by Mark McGwire , who hit 70 home runs during the 1998 season.
Extra credit : Maris wore #9 and batted left-handed... He was traded to St. Louis in 1967 and retired after the 1968 season.
Other baseball sluggers on Who2 include Barry Bonds and Lou Gehrig
