New York Yankee outfielder Roger Maris, of Fargo, North Dakota, is best known for hitting sixty-one home runs in 1961. His 61 in '61 set a new major league record, breaking Babe Ruth's previous mark of 60 hit in 1927. Roger and teammate Mickey Mantle entertained baseball fans throughout the summer of '61 as the two New York Yankee sluggers chased the record many called the most cherished in all of sports. Mickey dropped out of the home run race early due to an illness, but finished with a career high 54 home runs. Roger tied Ruth on September 26, hitting his 60th home run. He then hit his 61st home run on the final day of the season, October 1, 1961, against the Boston Red Sox to set a new record. The Yankees won the game, 1 to 0, and later went on to win the World Series. Roger was voted the Most Valuable Player in the American league for the second straight year, as he led the league in home runs and RBI's. He was also named the 1961 Associated Press' Male Athlete of the Year. During his career, Roger Maris played in seven World Series and seven All-Star games. He hit 275 career home runs and won the Gold Glove Award for outstanding defensive play. The New York Yankees retired his number "9" in 1984.

A legend of the game, the name Roger Eugene Maris is synonymous with baseball's most monumental and historic single-season record. Thirty-nine years later, baseball fans still measure home run hitters by comparison to Roger Maris. Yet, as unbelievable as it might seem, Roger Maris has not been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . Consider what the Hall of Fame has overlooked:
61 Single Season Home Runs (1961)
This record stood for 37 years,

the immortal Babe Ruth's 60-homers of 1927.

Memories of Roger
Roger's Final Resting Place
Portrait of a man – the real Roger that success never changed.

Roger Maris, the man, is as much a part of popular history as Roger Maris the baseball player. Consider these aspects of Roger’s life: Roger married his high school sweetheart, Pat Carvell, and they had six children. Roger would often seek out free time to be with his family. Roger would routinely make time to visit children in the hospital during his playing days, an ironic pre-cursor to his own death from cancer in 1985. Boyhood friend Don Gooselaw says the first thing Roger would do after games is to check on his family. “Roger was just Roger all the time,” Gooselaw says. Roger never lost sight of the small wonders in life. At the height of the pressure during the 1961 season, he virtually held up a game in Detroit to pause in the batter’s box admiring a flock of geese flying over Tiger Stadium. He hit the next pitch for his 58th home run. One of Maris' biggest concerns as the magical 1961 season wound down was obtaining World Series tickets for his friends and family. Although his 1961 salary was a mere $42,500, Roger paid for 100 World Series tickets himself. On the day Roger hit his 61st homer, fellow players had to cajole Maris out of the Yankee dugout to take a bow.
