This Personal Cosmic Game was requested by Alison Pudelsky of Swampscott, Massachusetts. Alison is a doctoral student in computer information theory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. An avid Red Sox fan she has also long been interested in the Salem Witchcraft hysteria of the late 17th century. Alison created the Salem Witchsox to honor nine of the 20 individuals who were executed as witches as a result of the witchcraft hysteria that struck the good but frightened people of Salem. Alison chose to pit her alleged witches against a very strong 1975 Boston Red Sox squad. The results surprised us.
Historians have long tried to figure out exactly why the hysteria in Salem, Massachusetts broke out when it did. In the April 1976 issue of Science magazine, Linda Caporael outlined an ergot-poisoning theory that suggested the inhabitants of Salem might have been victimized by a fungus parasite known as claviceps purpura . Rye grain infected with the fungus was baked for bread and in the process the fungus produced ergotamine an alkaloid that when heated in an oven turns into lysergic acid diethylamine commonly known as LSD. The consumption of the tainted bread might very well have led to the strange behavior which the citizens of Salem ascribed to witchcraft. Twenty people were executed as witches in the resulting hysteria. Click here for additional information about

BY MATT COKER As a baseball player, Fred Lynn is remembered most for his 1974-80 stint in centerfield with the Boston Red Sox. He burst upon the baseball scene in 1975, claiming both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors, the first player to ever accomplish that feat. He was also a six-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove winner with the BoSox.
Did you really think they could pull it off?
Oh yeah, absolutely I did. Even after that tough first game when [Giants pitcher] Jason Schmidt threw a great game. But these guys [Angels] are tenacious. They dispatched the Yankees pretty easily, so no one should have taken them lightly. This is a team of blue collar workers, not of stars. They work together as a team. What do you think of Barry Bonds?

Nomar and Nothing More: The Greatest Rookie? Because there's nothing else to care about here in Boston baseball, 1997, let's dwell some more on this Nomar Garciaparra phenomenon. Has anyone penned the nickname "NoMore Nomar" yet? Or "No Mas" Nomar? I never saw anyone else comment on the fact that, when the Red Sox play the Indians, the shortstops are Nomar and Omar. We all know that his first name is Ramon spelled backwards, but did you know that his last name is Ara Parsegian spelled sideways? (Made you look!) But enough about his name. As usual, I have What You Really Want to Know: Just how great is Garciaparra's rookie season, anyway? Sure, he's got the leadoff hitter RBI record, the A.L. rookie hitting streak record, the right-handed rookie Mexican glove-adjusting record. But is this the greatest rookie season of All-Time? Is it the greatest Red Sox rookie season? Is it the greatest rookie shortstop season? Where does Nomar's performance fit? Once again, I expect that someone else somewhere (that is, someone who gets paid to do this stuff) has already put together this information. But since I haven't seen it, I'm looking it up myself. So what follows is some data on The Rookies.
