Fred Lynn 10/8/97 "What do I think of the DH? Get rid of it! Get it out now! I like to see the pitcher hit. When you watch the NL games, you see it the way it was meant to be played... Some will argue that 'well, a player's going to lose a job.' I don't believe that. There's plenty of other positions a guy could play." Neat article. Thanks, Seanthe Lowell Sun isn't something I usually check out. Lots of food for thought about park effects in this. Aside from raising the question about how much better Lynn's career numbers would have been had he stayed in Fenway, there's interesting info about how quickly he adjusted to take advantage of The Wall: "I was a pull hitter when I first came here," he remembered. "But when I sat on the bench that first September and looked at that Wall, I changed my swing. IOO, Freddy knew how to take what Fenway gave. In his '82 Abstract, Bill James pointed out that Lynn was "80 points a year [in BA] better in Fenway..." Had he been able to stay, would the HoF be calling? Just for the record, that Jan. 23, 1981 trade of Lynn and Steve Renko brought us Frank Tanana (4-10, 4.02 in '81), Joe Rudi (.180/.242/.352 in 122 ABs), and Jim Dorsey (who later logged double-digit ERAs in brief appearances in '84 and '85). Tanana and Rudi both left as FAs after '81. (This was, IIRC, the Jean Yawkey-Haywood Sullivan-Buddy LeRoux era, otherwise known as The Years of Living Stupidly.)

Today in Baseball History - March 16, 2001
On March 16, 1978, high-priced free agent Andy Messersmith separates his shoulder in an exhibition game for the New York Yankees. The onetime 20-game winner will never win a game for the Yankees... On March 16, 1972, Oakland A's holdout Vida Blue announces that he has rejected the team's latest contract offer and will retire to work for a company that makes toilet fixtures. The "retirement" won't last long; Blue will eventually come to terms with the A's and begin his season in May... On March 16, 1953, American League owners turn down Bill Veeck's bid to move the St. Louis Browns to Baltimore. Some observers speculate that the rejection is meant to force Veeck into selling his majority interest in the franchise. The next day, Veeck announces his willingness to sell the Browns for just under $2.5 million. On March 16, 1972, Hall of Famer Pie Traynor dies at the age of 72. Traynor batted .320 over a 17-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Traynor batted a career-high .366 in 1930... On March 16, 1907, the Detroit Tigers offer legendary outfielder Ty Cobb to the Cleveland Naps for another star outfielder, Elmer Flick. Cleveland's manager, Napoleon Lajoie, rejects the trade of future Hall of Famers. Flick will bat .302 in 1907 while Cobb will lead the American League with a .350 mark... On March 16, 1906, future Hall of Famer Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner is born in Harrah, Oklahoma. Waner will make his major league debut in 1927, when he bats .355 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Waner will bat .316 over an 18-year career with the Pirates, Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Brooklyn Dodgers.

WBF would like to take this time to thank the many volunteers, who freely and without hesistation give their time, energy and experience to the young men and women participating in athletic competition. These individuals love the game, and along with the rest of us enjoy watching the young people of Polk County compete at the highest level.
It takes alot of time, equipment and sponsors to make local broadcast of high school sporting events possible. But thanks to the outpouring of time, energy and compasion from these community-minded individuals, we are never lacking in talent behind the microphone.

After a rookie season of unprecedented accomplishments, Fred Lynn had a tough act to follow. Fred Lynn Lynn, No. 84 on the Globe's list of the top New England sports figures of the century, burst onto the Boston sports scene in 1975 with a flourish rarely, if ever, matched.
