Send this review to a friend Baseball bio is a real home run REVIEW BY RON KAPLAN What is more remarkable, notes Jane Leavy, author of the new book Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy , is that for a good portion of his career he pitched with an arm injury that kept him in constant pain, which he relieved with a mix of painkillers, ice baths and an analgesic balm that was so strong people cried when they were around him. As Leavy points out, Koufax had it all: movie star good looks, a nimble brain and tons of athletic ability. Like Hank Greenberg, a Jewish first baseman for the Detroit Tigers a generation before, Koufax was an icon for Jews across America. He helped belie the myth that Jews were incapable of excelling in physical endeavors. Success never went to his head. He maintained friendships with his childhood buddies from Brooklyn, and around his teammates he was known for treating everyone the same, regardless of their color or hierarchy as an athlete. Leavy, an award-winning sportswriter and feature writer for the

February 3 ~  Instilling Fear Baseball Desk Reference P i t c h i n g is... the art of instilling f e a r. ~ Sandy Koufax A pitcher whose blazing fastball and brilliant curve instilled fear in the hearts of professional baseball players, Sanford "Sandy" Koufax (1935-) was born in Brooklyn, New York . He was signed by his hometown team while enrolled at the University of Cincinnati. "To win. Nothing else matters, and nothing else will do," he once said. This man with the golden arm, often considered the greatest left-handed pitcher, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 and moved with the team to L.A. in 1958. A three-time Cy Young Award winner at a time when there was one award for both leagues (1963,1965,1966), Koufax struck out an amazing 2,396 batters in his short career. About hitting a Koufax pitch, Pirates slugger Willie Stargell said, "Trying to hit him was like trying to drink coffee with a fork." Chronic arthritis forced Koufax's 1966 retirement at age 31. "I didn't regret making the decision. I regretted having to make the decision. At the time, I was risking the use of my arm, the normal use of my arm," he said. Six years later, he was the youngest player ever elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. About his career, Koufax observed, "In the end it all comes down to talent. You can talk all you want about intangibles, I just don't know what that means.

    Sandy Koufax: A Baseball Legend
by Seymour "Sy" Brody Sanford "Sandy" Koufax, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, was referred to as the "man with the golden arm." He established one record after another as he went through an 11-year career as a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Koufax was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Evelyn and Jack Braun. His mother divorced his father when he was young and remarried Irving Koufax, a lawyer who played an important role in raising Sandy and his stepsister, Edith. He took the children to the Yiddish theater in New York City and he was very supportive of Sandy's participation in baseball and basketball in Brooklyn's Lafayette High School. Koufax, who loved to play basketball, was constantly at the Jewish Community Center shooting baskets or playing with a team. When he was 15, he pitched for a team in the Baseball Ice Cream League, where baseball scouts watched him with great interest. After completing high school in 1952, he went on a basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. However, the baseball scouts were still after him and finally he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. The first three years were hectic for Koufax, who had trouble controlling his fast ball. At times, he would walk two or three batters before getting the next man out.

    http://www.angelfire.com/il3/SandyKoufax/
Website updated 15 August 2000 A prevailing philosophy claims that you can get too much of a good thing. In the case of Sandy Koufax, however, you can never get too much simply because he won’t let you. This icon in baseball history is an intensely private man, yet to someone like me, a Midwesterner who became a Los Angeles Dodger fan in the 1960's primarily because of him, he is like an old friend that we don't see enough of. Not too long ago, I was browsing online for a some pictures of Sandy to use in a screen- saver I was making for the birthday of my Dodger buddy, Carolyn. Besides the fact that I had to work very hard to gather enough pictures, I was amazed that no one had developed a website for Sandy ~ at least, not one that I stumbled upon through any of the search engines I was using. I found several web *pages* of biographical information, statistics, and memorabilia, but not an entire site dedicated to the Hall of Fame pitcher who occupies a special corner of my Dodger- blue heart. When I was in junior high, I won an essay contest writing about Sandy. After a little behind-the-scenes maneuvering from my mama, I was honored to receive from Sandy an autographed baseball with the words "Best wishes, Vikki ~ Sandy Koufax" written in his familiar (at least to me) handwriting. Collectors have since told me that the ball is devalued because Sandy wrote my name on it. However, to me, sentimental soul that I am, the ball became instantly priceless not only because of the personalization but also because this great man had taken the time to send it to me.

Like Koufax's 1965 perfect game, this biography achieves something close to perfection. Not a typical sports bio in any sense, Leavy constructs a beautiful story. It is one that weaves fans, stories, stats, and Koufax himself. It treats him with tremendous respectsomething many biographies never do. It does not gossip or speculate. It enlightens. It tells of time a I never got to see (and one none of us shall ever see again). It makes Koufax real and, in a sense, that makes him even more of hero. Koufax was perhaps the best who ever pitched. This is certainly the best sports biography I have ever read. The REAL Joe DiMaggio It's been said that Ted Williams was the "real John Wayne." Through Jane Leavy's excellent book, it could be argued that we meet the "real Joe DiMaggio." Sandy Koufax was and is everything DiMaggio's apologists wanted him to be - superior athlete who performed with grace, iconic ethnic hero, dignified, private - but with far, far more elegance and class and substance than Joltin' Joe when examined close up.

Media: Hardcover Publisher: HarperCollins Salesrank: Release Date: September 17, 2002 Author: Jane Leavy Customer Reviews: Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy September 9, 1965. Where were you? "On the mound tonight for the Los Angeles Dodgers ... number 32 ... the great left-hander... Sandy Koufax". These were the energizing words coming over the airwaves that I lived for as a teenager in the mid-60s. I was a Dodger fan. More specifically, a Sandy Koufax fan. I never saw him pitch, but rather relied on the Voice of the Dodgers, Vin Scully, to paint in my mind's eye the picture of my hero at work. So, on September 9, 1965, it was after "lights out" at a private boarding school north of Los Angeles, and I was under the covers with my transistor radio surreptitiously glued to the final inning of Sandy's perfect game against the Chicago Cubs. Consciously or not, former sportswriter Jane Leavy has constructed SANDY KOUFAX: A LEFTY'S LEGACY much the same as Ed Gruver's year 2000 book, KOUFAX. In each, the author alternates multiple chapters about Sandy's upbringing, professional career, and post-retirement with chapters that are a batter by batter account of Sandy's greatest diamond triumphs - at one inning per chapter. In Gruver's story, it was the last game of the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins when Koufax pitched with only two days rest, and clinched the Fall Classic with grit and a fastball. In Leavy's, it's the Perfect Game pitched against the Cubs at Dodger Stadium, when Sandy's performance touched the truly sublime.
