In Kotsay, Padres have a 'gamer'
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER March 30, 2001 P EORIA, Ariz. When word came Wednesday night that Marlins outfielder Mark Kotsay had been traded to the Padres, Kotsay's wife, Jamie, issued a succinct comment: For the Padres, the feeling is mutual. They expect Kotsay to become a Gold Glover who hits 20-25 home runs a year and sparks the top third of the lineup for the next 10 years. The Marlins, who drafted Kotsay ninth overall in 1996, share that opinion. After failing to keep Steve Finley, the Padres now have a similar player, though Kotsay is in an earlier stage of learning his swing and how to produce power. Finley hadn't hit more than 11 home runs in a big league season until he launched 30 as a 31-year-old in 1996. Kotsay batted .298 last year and hit 12 home runs, his highest total in three major league seasons. In Miami, Kotsay hit a lot of drives that were caught on the warning track in right-center. In San Diego, those could be doubles or home runs. The numbers lend some support to the assertion that Kotsay will benefit from playing in a ballpark with a smaller right field. In the past three years, 16 of the left-hander's 31 home runs came on the road, and his slugging percentage was slightly better (.429) away from Florida. Kotsay's defensive wizardry and enthusiasm for fundamentals also appeal to the Padres. He said he developed a no-nonsense approach while helping Cal State Fullerton win the College World Series in 1995. Preceding him at the school was Phil Nevin, who like Kotsay was honored as the NCAA's top player.

You should have been there. The greatest baseball talent Orange County has ever produced assembled on the top deck of Cal State Fullerton’s Goodwin Field Saturday night. The university honored its three greatest baseball players on "Golden Spikes Night."
There was 17-year major league baseball player Tim Wallach, now retired, looking like he could still hit 102 RBIs as he did in leading the CSUF baseball program to its first national championship in 1979. His 102 RBI is still a school-record.
Next to Wallach stood current San Diego Padre Phil Nevin, who was the first overall pick in the 1992 Major League Baseball amateur draft and the first player in 28 years to earn College World Series Most Outstanding Player honors from a team that did not win the title.
"It’s an honor to be alongside Phil Nevin and Tim Wallach and to share their accomplishments," Kotsay said. "The ceremony was emotional but it was the greatest honor."

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER August 7, 2001 But inside the baseball game, there is no higher form of praise. Some players are hitters. Others are sluggers or fielders. PADRES Magazine - May/June 2002 - Vol. 2002, No.2 ASTROLOGICAL PROFILE:
    Mark Kotsay
    by Andrea Mallis
    Mark Kotsay
Mark Kotsay exemplifies the athletic, adventurous spirit of the Archer, born December 2nd, 1975 under the fire sign Sagittarius. His enthusiasm is irrepressible as he takes aim to alter the course of life. He's a non-conformist who possesses an instinctual urge for exploring new horizons. Straightforward and truthful to a fault, Mark has an open, candid personality. An independent soul, he does enjoy the company of others, as long as they allow him the freedom to explore. Generous, likable and easy-going, he loves sports and travel-the further the better! Living with one foot in the future, Mark feels destiny plays a large part on his path and is naturally prophetic. An incurable optimist, he's got big dreams that embrace expansive desires. Faith and trust guide his ambition. Armed with a sporting, playful attitude, Mark beholds the big picture: life is viewed as a journey, providing endless opportunities for creating change and making new contacts. Baseball is a perfect fit for this restless adventurer. Relishing spontaneity and novelty, the variety and exhilaration of baseball feeds his soul. As an added perk, he derives great joy from exploring the world, and has a blast in transit. Discussing philosophical beliefs on long flights is a brilliant way to pass the time. Living on nervous energy, he tends to take flight in various directions. While fire signs can be impatient at times, Mark has turned this into a distinct advantage-hitting first pitch homeruns!
